A recent example of this trope is in Blue Eye Samurai. The big bad, Fowler, grabs a spider while praying. You assume he crushes it, but at the end of the scene, you can see it scurry out of his hand. He's not a redeemable character, but he still has depth to him. Death is a means to an end for him and only relishes in death when the death serves him.

I got a theory it took all four diamonds to bring back the corrupted gems completely restored so the diamonds say the corruption blast was suppose to wipeout every gem instantly I guess the reason that didn’t work was because they didn’t have pink and she would’ve had to use her power in reverse! Meaning her in reverse alongside the rest of the diamonds it would’ve wiped out every gem to dust completely but gems were only corrupted because they didn’t get the full effect thanks to pink diamond rebellion
