Have you ever heard that stress causes ulcers? Is this true?
In this video, I will discuss whether physical and mental stress can cause ulcers. What types of physiologic conditions can cause ulcers? What about emotional stress?
If stress doesn't cause ulcers then why are more stressed people getting more ulcers? Is mental stress associated with ulcers? If yes, how so? What bad decisions do people make that lead them to having ulcers?
Does mental stress cause GI symptoms? How are depression and anxiety linked to Functional GI Diseases? What are Functional GI Diseases and how do they different from organic diseases?
Do you ever feel like the medical system is against you or doesn't believe your symptoms because there is seemingly no physical cause? That can be extremely frustrating and it's understandable that it would drive patients crazy! How can we treat your symptoms without being able to visualize a problem? How is medication prescribed in this situation?
What is the difference between association and causation? How can we establish a cause-effect relationship between mental stress and ulcers?
What kinds of medications do Functional GI Diseases respond to and which do they not respond to?
Learn all of this and more by watching the video!

Our gut is one of the main defense barriers for infections and toxins as these are in our foods. Gut health is essential for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients from food. Stress can be damaging to the gut causing inflammation and leaky gut, which will be the start of chronic diseases due to bacteria and toxins entering the bloodstream. Great and useful information! Thank you Dr. Mark!❤👍

The current body of research may not include studies in which psychological stress is the causative agent of ulcers and this doesn't mean psychological stress doesn't cause ulcers either directly or indirectly. I was 15 years old when I was diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer. My hx included a handful of colds and 3 bouts of the flu. I had taken antibiotics 3x, my H. Pylori tests were negative, my diet didn't include processed foods, refined sugar or carbonation and I was physically active 60+ min/day 6 days a week. Because I was physically and emotionally abused by my female parent beginning when I was 6 years old I lived in a chronic state of fear & stress that caused me to vomit 3-4 days/wk. The stress came first and the ulcer followed. What's more, another family member living in the same household was diagnosed with a peptic ulcer. His H. pylori test was negative and he didn't vomit until 10 years after he had been diagnosed. In both cases the psychological stress occurred before signs & symptoms and the diagnosis followed years later.
