(How Strong Are Your Welds) Testing Your MIG WELDS at Home (Will They BREAK?)

In this video I show you two super cool ways to test you mig welds for maximum penetration. The first one is to clamp your weld in a vise and use a big crescent wrench and break the weld to see how it breaks to determined the strength. The second is the cool scientific way is to use chemicals to etch the weld. I hope you guys go out and try these processes, also follow all safety recommendations from the manufactures. I enjoyed your video but what was of most value was that pretty welds on the surface doesn't necessarily equate to good penetration to the base metal. A worthy comparison would be to show that to 6010/11 penetration. that would help new welders to see the deep penetration against light penetration.

Thank you for the video. Very interesting. I've always had a tendency to lean towards nice hot penetrating welds when using stick. No failures on projects doing that. Recently got a mig and doing some break tests has been eye opening. Initially getting poor penetration with welds barely stuck. Plenty of practice later and now much better. Do you see any negatives to leaning towards hot penetrating welds, apart from potential distortion?

Its really a balancing act for me, like say I'm going to be butt welding 3/16 tubing together, I would put a good angle chamfer on the ends so I only had to penetrate like 1/8" then do a fill pass on top of that. That is how I handle heavier wall metal. You get good penetration with out the warp. Thanks for watching!!!!
