Donald Duck, aka Kalle Anka is such a fascinating Svenska Christmas tradition, so I adapted Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land into my own Christmas tradition here in Wisconsin, my home state.

Thank you for this. Your traditions are very similar to my personal traditions, actually and I’m not Swedish at all. My family never understood my fascination with Donald Duck on Xmas day 🤪 and actually I don’t understand it either but maybe I was Swedish in my past life ? 🤣🤣🤣

In several parts of Canada we also start to celebrate on the 24th. We have a Christmas dinner with family in the evening, open our presents and stay up late playing different games. The 25 and 26 are paid holidays and we continue to visit family and have a feast together. I love this time of the year!!!

In the UK we usually have a family meal on Christmas Eve - but smaller and with close family or maybe friends. In our house we open one present each as well but not everyone does this. We also keep celebrating after the 25th - on the 26th is “boxing day” where you commonly see friends and eat a buffet (smörgåsbord) of food leftover from the big dinner on the 25th. I think there isn’t a country in the world where boxes of chocolate aren’t a cause of family conflict! There is always one person who doesn’t play fair! They should come with vouchers for free family therapy. 😂🤣😂

Wow!! I really appreciated this video, how lovely your traditions are😍 in Italy we usually eat dinner on the 24th and open the gifts at midnight, and on the 26th we celebrate St. Stephen. I want to eat your Aladdin chocolates so bad😂🍫 I can't wait to watch the next video about your typical Christmas traditions!

Thanks for this video! I love learning about Sweden & Swedish this way. Is there any lore about how Donald Duck ~ of all Disney characters ~ ended up beloved by Swedes? Why not Pluto, for example? God jul och Gott nytt år!
@FunSwedish
@FunSwedish 3 года назад
The show is a mix with lots of short bits of popular Disney movies. From The Lion King to Frozen and some really old ones. However, Donald Duck is the "presenter" of the show. So that why it is called after him :)
@volantiad
@volantiad 3 года назад
@@FunSwedish Thanks: I thought it was a whole show of nothing but Kalle Anka. I'm still curious, though: is there an origin story of how the tradition got started in the first place? It seem so random, lol :)

The Asian version of Swedes celebrating Xmas early would be Singaporean Chinese starting to celebrate Chinese New Year about a week before it even started- by "starting to celebrate", I mean stocking up on CNY goodies and deco and then start visiting relatives' houses about 2-3 days before the actual CNY👀 Also, the Julstakke looks so cool! The closest Chinese version of that (imo) would be the Mid-Autumn festival (中秋节) lanterns. Mostly because kids love to hold multiple lanterns at one go for some absurd reason🤷‍♀️
@FunSwedish
@FunSwedish 2 года назад
Yes. Sounds like the most similar thing to the Swedish Xmas. The celebration of the Chinese New Year seems like super fun! I would love to experience it someday 😊
@tomeofslyev
@tomeofslyev 2 года назад
@@FunSwedish You absolutely should! We have a LOT of goodies - from pineapple tarts, to egg rolls/love letters (very crunchy)! Also, CNY is a brilliant excuse to stay up till the wee hours of the morning and get money from your elders in the form of red packets😏

It is not at all that we are impatient, we celebrate because the Nordic custom has its roots in the time before the mechanical clock. A new day began then at sunset instead of as now at midnight

Sorry but .... the 'normal' in Sweden is absolutely not to have guests early on Christmas Eve. Christmas lunch about 1 PM is more 'normal' but definately not early.

For the rest of the world that is pretty early 🙈. In some countries, people will get toghether at 19:00 or 20:00 😅
