How the 2019 rule changes have made things harder for Mercedes

Mercedes made good on its promise to finally show some pace on the final day of the opening Formula 1 test of 2019, proving it had been holding back on the first three days. But how convincing were its times, and does the fact it is now the only team on the grid not running a high-rake ride height set-up make its life harder under the new rules that are in place for this year? Gary Anderson and Jack Benyon join Glenn Freeman in Barcelona to discuss the good and the possibly bad news for Mercedes, plus what we can read into the teams that set the pace on the final day: Renault and Toro Rosso

It's like they've never heard of huge aspects of the sport before and that they think that every team should go balls out from the first day/every day of two weeks of testing, otherwise they've got a bad car. It's not like the teams would want to learn anything about their chasis, tyres or engines.

Mercedes are well-known for always, always keeping performance up their sleeves. Frankly, that formula has lulled the other teams into believing that they have an advantage that evaporates as the season unfolds. As an aero specialist, Mercedes have always been superb at getting the set-up right, from race one. They have suffered with reliability, but resolved that problem, last season. They also suffered from disruption in the wake of other cars, leaning heavily on DRS and raw power to overtake. Simplifying the airflow, on all cars helps Mercedes. Betting against Mercedes having more power, without needing the 5 KG of extra fuel is a fool’s errand. Just as foolish as believing that Ferrari have leap-frogged Mercedes in spite of nearly continuous management changes. I expect we haven’t seen “party mode” yet, nor have we seen the final rake configuration. Running a higher rake, during testing, reduces ground-effect, reducing downforce and grip. Lower temperatures in Spain will also have worked against Mercedes aero, and their use of hard tyres almost throughout this week. Mercedes are masters at playing with the other teams’ strategists. With their CFD and wind-tunnel resources, they are nowhere near optimized. What we know is that they had more time, more people and some strengths no one could match long before they had 2018 in their pockets. Ferrari seem compelled to show their hand much too early, year after year. Honestly their best move was to bring in Leclerc. If he’s one tenth down on Vettel, he has proven that he will always get a little more out of his car, when it’s needed. Vettel is simply too accident prone, when under pressure. He fell to pieces in the second half of 2018, so I reckon the greatest threats to Hamilton are Leclerc, an improved Botha’s, Verstappen if Honda deliver, and Raikkonen, who posted some impressive times this week. However, I think Hamilton and Wolff have margins we won’t team until Australia.

Well, merc car wasn't that much ahead last year (compare to 2015 & 2016) Hamilton was way better that Vettel. Merc's strategy was better than Ferrari's during races. Merc's engine was far superior to Renault's. All that are fact. But the red bull chassis was i think much better than everyone else. And i believe Ferrari as well had a better chassis than merc. So i guess you could have car with great aero with high rake and low rake car.

While testing is testing and we shouldn't read too much into it, etc, etc it is interesting to compare teams fastest 2019 testing laps with their best qualifying time from the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix. Two things (obviously there are other factors to) to note when doing this is that it is much warmer for the GP itself and teams do not run the C5 (softest) tire at the actual GP. Pirelli have said the C5 might not be as advantageous as one might expect because it is not suited to Catalunya and so it is difficult to hook up for a complete lap. Hulkenberg's fastest lap on day 4 is over 1.5sec faster than his 2018 quali time and over 0.5sec faster than Sainz's lap was. Hulkenberg's time would have qualified him 7th in last years GP, behind the top 3 teams and this is only the first test. Daniel Riccardo's best time was only 0.5 secs slower than his 2018 quali in the RB14. Likewise Alfa and Torro Rosso's fastest times are more than 1.5 sec faster than their best 2018 quali times. These teams, along with Haas and maybe Mclaren, are probably the ones who have revealed their hands the most in the first test. We obviously don't know how the teams stack up against each other yet, but I think a conclusion that can be safely drawn is that the new aero regs have not made the cars 1.5 seconds slower than 2018.

The explanation about Mercedes running "more wing" at the front to compensate the lack of ground effect with its low rake is plain silly. They point out that Ferrari has a higher rake and therefore doesn't need as much angle on the front wing, yet conveniently ignores the team that runs the most rake aka RBR which has a similar front wing design as Mercedes! More rake doesn't automatically means higher downforce. As other videos have pointed out it is a concept that has its benefits and negatives. Mercedes have simply went for the low rake concept and have been successful, yet people still doubt its effectiveness!

@@sakalabudhi123 oh shut up, throwing in a bunch of big words means nothing. And as for Gazza, the succes of Mercedes the better part of the last decade can't really be contributed to their chassis as much as their PU. Do you really want to argue that Mercedes' chassis was better than RBR's? The silver arrows didn't prove the effectiveness of a low rake, they proved that they had the best understanding of the V6 engines. You can build a great car with a low rake, you can build a great car with a high rake and everything inbetween. It's about the total package, including the PU's integration into the chassis.

@SwiftFX Bro, I get you and I can understand what Garry is saying cause the down force levels increase significantly with the front wing's ground proximity even at low speeds cause I have done simulations myself for my final year project. I am not one of those guys that is against Mercedes or a blind fan of Ferrari. RBR had a better chassis without a doubt, Mercedes got away with extremely complex Aero designs which I think took a hit on them with this year's regulation changes. I am not counting them out, they have the largest Aero team on the grid. Even if it means copying the Ferrari design, which could push their development plan weeks and months behind, I think they can afford it. Lets just wait for the Melbourne qualifying.

Funny thing is... Mark Hughes at MotorSportMagazine.com was saying that due to the loss of outwash front wings, a low rake car would be at an advantage and Mercedes is the only team who's stuck to their guns. If you look at the front wings' designs, Mercedes have designed their wing to generate maximum downforce. They're not muppets at Brackley, they must've seen something and stuck to their morals. I reckon they have potential in the car, if they sort out their balance issues, we'll start to see that performance more consistently.

No one wants to show their hand, they can use the aero results they have to create more precise simulations so we won’t see anyone’s true pace until quali at Australia. You’re reading too much into it for the sake of it. Comparing the lap times to previous results will achieve nothing because all of the regulations are different, no one except the teams have number in the terms of how they compare to the previous results. The times we are seeing mean nothing. All we do know is that pretty much all the teams can go quicker than they already are, and if they can’t then they’re in trouble!

I have noticed that both Mercedes drivers has had consistenly similar lap times through the week. They have also increased day by day. I think they run their programs and we will see their true performance come australia.

Hamilton(c4) and leclerc(c3) virtually did the same lap. But the fuel modes are different and arguably even the program and engine modes are different. It's just the first test. That said. The mood at the Mercedes camp is not the same as last year. They're not as confident as they want to be, but are pretty confident none the less. Which means they have problems for sure but whether that translates to them being slower than Ferrari is something no one can predict. Hamilton on his lap and short runs weren't as smooth as Ferrari. There were some oversteers and didn't seem as stable as Ferrari. This to me says the balance isn't there and that's probably why Mercedes aren't as confident as they want to be although they're still very confident. I think even the teams don't know and that's why I think Mercedes did their performance run so that they know where they stand and get an idea of what needs to be done. It's just the first test. All we can say is Ferrari look strong and so do Mercedes. Ferrari are the happier team.

So Renault set a faster time in testing than they did last year in Q3 by a reasonable amount, with new regulations that are said to make cars slower? If Renault can improve on last years time, Mercedes in theory would have 2 seconds to gain, if not, it would mean Renault significantly gained on them this year, unless i'm missing something, but I imagine a Q3 time would be their best effort.
@silversteve-o68
@silversteve-o68 5 лет назад
On tyres that are 2 steps softer than used in quali last year though. So they have gained basically 2 seconds just from the tyres.
@offcourse9241
@offcourse9241 5 лет назад
The other unknown is how the track has evolved from 2018 testing and race (ntm the weather). Renault (Ric) did a lap on SS that was .374 off Sainz's 2018 qualifying time on the same tyre. I would suggest that .4 in testing compared to Q3 when your balls out is nothing. So have Renault lost nothing with the new regs or is it track? If Renault can match their Q3 time from 2018 would you not expect that Ferrari, Mercedes, RBR would be able to do the same? If so, then they should at least be doing: Ferrari 1:16.679 on C3, Mercedes 1:16.547 on C4, RBR 1:17.190 on C3. If you follow this analysis through then based on Testing times, all of the top 3 have lost time compared to last year while the mid field has closed the gap. Do we really think that Ferrari has lost 1.367s, Merc 1.43s, RBR 1.590s over last years track and reg changes while Renault has only lost .374? Pundits should learn to do maths and stop inflating results. All these headline times prove nothing. Can we please have in depth analysis on long run pace?
@Miragexe
@Miragexe 5 лет назад
@@offcourse9241 Well that's what i'm wondering, I didn't imply that the top teams lost that much, but wonder if they can still gain that much, or atleast a significant amount of that and get into the 1:16s.

The softer tyres are not worth two seconds lol! We're not going from hard to hyper softs here!.... Also no one here is going flat out in every way possible! Just by comparing numbers this years Ferrari looks faster than last years car! And several other cars appear to be quicker aswell! Just compare testing times from last year! Theyre mostly going quicker and they also had the super sticky tyres last year in testing

Law of diminishing returns, Mercedes were closer to peak performance than Renault, so relatively less gain to be had.

Mercedes have said that Ferrari look stronger, but they say that every race weekend. Even after they'd won the championship, I'm sure Toto probably said that Ferrari still look like the stronger team and that Mercedes have a fight on their hands. Until Ferrari come out and say "actually, yeah, we do look faster" will I actually believe it.
