In Holland, there were 2 moments on tv that almost made me put my head through the table. 1. The guy pulled out the entire (!) rule book of F1, which of course is many, many pages thick, and just said: "This sport is too complicated and should be easier to understand." Well... No! What do you think happens when you put 1000 people with 1 billion dollars in a windtunnel? That they didn't find any loophole in the regulations that they can exploit? 2. One of the more knowledgeable presenters was asked to explain the different Power Unit components (ICE, turbo, MGU-K, MGU-H, ES and electronics), with a picture in the background. He started naming them by name, without any real explanation, and before he got to the 3rd component, 1 of the guys said: "Yeah, you can stop, I don't understand it with all the hybrid stuff." I almost smashed my tv right then. I know this all sounds like a bit of a rant (because it is), and I understand they're doing it to get (and keep) all the new viewers interested in the sport. But come on... If you can't understand how a bloody battery works, you should watch golf or something. We need more Marks and Scarbs!

Hey Marc, congratulations on your award. Very well deserved. Thank you for saying what a lot of people have been thinking. IE there ain't no way that was done in a week!!! I have a bit of a theory that one of the reasons Mercedes are so good at developing their car during the season is the huge numbers of laps they put in at testing. Maybe they weren't the fastest car at testing (although who knows) but I'll bet they understand their car so well that they will be able to develop it well during the season.

Just wanted to say, that I didn't even know you had a channel Marc, and also, I'm so glad that you do. Subbed and will watch more and continue to as well. I've known testing times to be irrelevant for a long time but it's nice to see that said by someone like yourself too. The media make such a fanfare of it all, I guess it's to try and keep readers reading and having things to talk about it but it really is a heck of a lot of guessing. The real time we'll get to see the differences is in Q1/2 and more importantly 3 in Oz. Then we'll know the pecking order. I agree about the body language aspect though - Ferrari and the vibes coming from them... they're in a good place right now and I don't mind if they dominate even like how Merc do, it'd be great to watch Merc's reaction and see how they can work their car up and try to improve it.

Half the fun for me is watching the teams adjust over the season and per track. Last year it seemed obvious to me that RedBull built their cars to win at certain tracks (Monaco , Mexico, etc...) rather than for a whole season strategy. Because of their engine deficit they had no good way to win everywhere and settled for glory at specific tracks.

#askelvis Hi Marc! Last time I asked you about the best majors to get an F1 related job. I was extremely busy with my math exam and couldn't respond to your comment in time. I am sorry. I will just repost my response. The biggest reason why I will change my major is software. I do not enjoy coding very much. Prefer to get hands-on and seeing in the flesh. Engines were my biggest fascination since I was a child but I do believe they will be obsolete in the near future. The next thing that interests me is aerodynamics. I love how the smallest pieces can affect a car massively. I was quite fascinated with Lamborghinis ALA technology and how it was one of the key reasons why it shattered the 918s record at the Nordschleife. There is not just one specific role/job I want or that interest me. I love the technical aspects of Formula 1 and I just want to be a part of it.

@Niko-xz5lk 5 лет назад
Great stuff as always Marc. The fans need your input because the media is misleading people. I've given up trying to explain testing to people. How many times I've heard people say that experts have accurately worked out the deltas between the cars and say exactly where Mercedes is Compared to Ferrari. For the most part, it's all fake news. I have no problem with the likes of Autosport speculating on who they believe is where in terms of performance, this is part of the fun of the sport. But misleading people for the sake of a story isn't right to me. It directs people into seeing this important pre-season program as something which it isn't, and that is the opposite of what so-called technical videos should be about.

#askelvis How common is "sandbagging" and how beneficial do you think it is for, let's say.. Mercedes to sandbag until Q3 Melbourne. I would've thought it to not be worth it because don't the teams need to push their cars to the max before Melbourne to see where they're at, and to see how their car reacts when being pushed so far to see what might need to be changed, etc? So do they sandbag or is it just more a media thing in your experience?

Great video again Marc, i can't be on the book launch. But will check it out when it's in store. #AskElvis: i was wondering wat happens if a car crashes like Gasley last week. They build a new car over night they said. Do they use only new part or also parts of the crashed one? And how do they know the parts are not damaged or only a little bit. They have to be 100% sure the parts are in perfect condition otherwise it can be dangerous. In other words how do they check those parts. (Oops,not quiet 1 question 😃) Greets, Sander (Netherlands)
@F1Elvis

Yes, all parts are tested using various non-destructive methods like ultrasound and UV crack checking. Most parts will simply be replaced though, as long as there are spares.

Marc considering the intricacy of the Mercedes car and the fact that they are effectively the only team that didn't go for high rake, do you think that they may be trying really hard to optimise a suboptimal solution? I wonder whether the turbulent air flow of the car in front might affect the merc more than its competitors simply due to all these fins and vanes that have to combine in harmony together? Whereas rbr and ferrari are possibly able to achieve same results with simpler solutions.

#AskElvis When you see a team bring two different designs to testing the way Mercedes did, is it strictly a difference in the design evolution over time, or can it also be a type of A/B testing at work? (to decide which approach wins out in real world conditions before committing to one at the start of the season)

@F1Elvis

Marginally, yes, but things like the aerodynamic centre of pressure move forward with high rake, which helps to balance the car that way. Lots of effects of both concepts, one not necessarily clearly better than the other, just different approaches.

Is that what we saw on Friday with Merc doing just one qualify lap per driver or are we still not near the limit?

Yes, I don't think anyone was sandbagging, not even Merc, just all running to slightly different programs. Yes, at some point everyone does a low fuel, soft tyre run, but that's still not to say it's the absolute ultimate time the car can do.

One thing I was wondering: I agree that this 2.0 merc would've been in the pipeline a lot longer, but is it possible that they accelerated the production when they realized they were behind in the first week? Could it be that the original plan was to run this in Australia?
@Exevium
@Exevium 5 лет назад
Good question! I was wondering the same, but I don't think a week would be enough time to produce so many different components. It's hardly enough time to just paint them all lol. They had to start with that at least a month ago, hadn't they?

Do we know/have info that the new Merc was a completely different car (as in new tub/chassis number) or was it the same tub stripped and repackaged? Just wondering as it may give a little insight into this 2 spec theory (different specs for different tracks) though I agree with Marc's statement that we are really just seeing a two stage testing program rather than competing plans for the season.

Same chassis spec I believe.

It would be incredibly difficult to run two different spec chassis for two drivers with spares in case of an accident. Not to mention homologating, crash testing etc all over again.

Considering how cool is it in Europe in winter, how does that compromise team's understanding of any potential cooling problems on the car? #askelvis
@F1Elvis
@F1Elvis 5 лет назад
They use the ambient in Barcelona as reference and factor up cooling requirements in hotter climates from that.

Ok so why does Mercedes always go with the less rake concept? I saw a video once with adrian newey and he mentioned that its very efficient downforce and no reason not to do it, we see that redbull always have good aero, so why then dont mercedes go that route?

Hi I have 2 Questions: Nr.1 : I heard some rumors about the Ferrari having some Aerodynamic "thing's" that push the Car further down to the ground. Nr.2 : Is the Ferrari that much of a Smoker(Marlboro)? or why is this huge smoke when the Car Drives out of the Garage ? Thank you very much Sir. Greetings from Swiss. HOPP SAUBER!

Hi, am just wondering how quickly can a top team copy another component from another team and have it on the car? Eg front wing etc. Regards
@F1Elvis
@F1Elvis 5 лет назад
It obviously depends on the component, but a front wing on it's own might take a couple of weeks.
@tcroft2165
@tcroft2165 5 лет назад
But the problem surely is that the rest of the body might need changing. Some teams designs are much closer than others but some would need a total redesign

@@F1Elvis cool was just curious to time to design and build. I understand cars can be completely different by if they where similar.

#askelvis Do you think we will get to the point were the front tyres/wheels are covered,so we increase aero efficiency over the front of the car,something similar to an formula e car?

@Marc Priestley.... Just a suggestion, while you have the monitor set up for going through the cars, maybe go through the streamlined version of the 1954 and 1955 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Formula One racing car. mercedes-benz-publicarchive.com/marsClassic/en/instance/ko.xhtml?oid=6873&relId=1001&resultInfoTypeId=172#toRelation

I think that the merc and Ferrari have kinda switched places. meaning that the Ferrari is faster but it seems (to me) like it is a bit more dependent on clean air than Ferrari
