How A Mid-Engine Corvette Became So Much Quicker To 60 MPH
How To Get The Best RWD Launch - • How To Launch A RWD Ca...

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is a monumental shift in the car's design. For the first time ever, a production Corvette will be mid-engine, with the engine placed behind the driver, and be equipped with an 8-speed dual clutch transmission. The C8 Corvette features a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque with the optional performance exhaust. With the engine's torque, the transmissions speed, and the Michelin PS4S tire's grip, a quick 0-60 time was inevitable.
But power and grippy tires can only do so much for acceleration when your design is limited by weight transfer. And the previous ZR1 Corvette, with it's insanely fast sub-3 second 60 mph speed, was limited by simple physics. If you can't get enough of the weight of a car onto the driven wheels, acceleration will suffer. By moving the engine back on the new Corvette, the acceleration potential is greatly improved. Check out the video for 0-60 predictions, braking distance predictions, and a fascinating overview of the 2020 Corvette Stingray.

AN ENGINEERING MARVEL. Any big manufacturer can make a midengine supercar with 500hp at a 200k pricepoint that does everything the corvette does, and honestly they got the obligation to do it. BUT at 60K they just got the right to deliver and they still DID. HUGE compliment to all the GM dev team. A GAMECHANGER CAR.

Lower COG compared with a design that doesn't have dry sump, but in absolute terms it doesn't appear to be mounted any lower than the C7. At the same time... weight distribution, driver visibility, blah blah blah. There are pros and cons to front-mid-engine designs and rear-mid-engine designs. Bonanza Driver because it’s 40k units per year, they can make it on the cheap. “Small” brakes are more than enough for city driving. Track people will want bigger version in a higher trim with more weight. If you want biggest brakes on the street, then Ferrari will be happy to sell you anything for 4 - 6 times the cost. It’s a feat to make anything for a fixed cost rather than to be not limited. Most of us don’t have 250k to blow on a car.

@@srinitaaigaura right, well, drag strips are prepped with a sticky compound that does act a bit like glue, and doing a burnout does rapidly heat up the tire and the track surface making it extremely sticky. But the wrinkles in the tire are why I said the tires don't have much air in them, extremely low air pressure so when they take off the tire doesn't slide across the ground, it flattens down because with less air the tires aren't hard, they're very squishy, so they squish down and grip the track.

Ford doesn't seem to have a problem selling their GT for that price, which makes me wonder why GM doesn't try to sell theirs for more. Could they sell for $500k? @damacknificent151 4 года назад
@@ts89540 I'm sure that Chevy is still making profit on the new C8, otherwise they wouldn't sell it at that price. Think about it. They've been playing with the idea of mid engine since the beginning of time. It's not like they spend billions upon billions on research. Maybe over time at least they don't feel that way. Most stuff is same technology slightly twiked. Now count how many people are going to buy it. It's in the boat load count. I'm even thinking of getting one. Maybe not now but maybe in the future. Good direction for the C8.

Is it to keep in line with their slow price increases on Vettes through the ages? It's a really great car (on paper, at least) so why not base it at $65k? $70k (BMW M4 and AUdi RS5 territory)? Maybe sell even more at $58k? I'm not criticizing Corvette (well, maybe the C5) or GM, just wondering aloud.

The fact that they're aimed at different markets aside, no the C8 is most definitely not faster around a track than the GT. The GT is lighter, more powerful, and has way more aggressive aero to keep it planted around corners at higher speeds. The C8 is going to be incredible, especially at the price point. But don't try to claim it's something it's not, that being in the same category as the GT.
