2021 Ford Bronco Has A Manual Transmission With A Crawler Gear!

The 2021 Ford Bronco has won over the hearts of both off-road enthusiasts and mall-crawlers alike. It's a genuinely beautiful blend of both on-road and off-road usability. The Ford Bronco has two engine options, a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder or a 2.7L twin-turbo V6. If you choose the inline-four, you'll be rewarded with the option of a manual transmission. Not just a six-speed, it also offers a crawler gear! You'll find a "C" labeled on the stick shift. In this video, we'll learn about what crawler gears are, why they're implemented, and when they're useful. It all leads to the Ford Bronco's bonkers 94.75 crawl ratio! We'll be talking wheel torque, wheel forces, and wheel speeds - hope you enjoy!

*COMMON QUESTION:* Many comments confused about section 3, wheel force. Folks wondering why aren't you multiplying the 5,000 by 4 since there are 4 tires. As mentioned, I'm modeling it as *all* of the weight on a *single* tire. If you were to look at individual tires (assuming equal weight distribution), each tire can put down a max of 1250 lbf (5000 lbf / 4 tires). Add up the tires, model it as a single tire, and you get 5000 lbf. This number is far, far less than 21000 lbf.
@ElPants21
@ElPants21 4 года назад
Would the max ground force increase when lifting the vehicle, such as up a boulder using the tread blocks rather than the flat bottom surface of the tire? If so were you approximating this at 1 to compensate for lower traction situations?
@miguelcontreras5782
@miguelcontreras5782 4 года назад
I think you’re looking at it the wrong way, if you think about how a combustion engine works, you know that peak torque isn’t available at idle, the engine needs to rev up before hitting peak torque, but if your engine has already revved up is because you either have the clutch not transmitting force, or because you have already gotten the vehicle (or the wheels) moving. So I don’t think that Ford would limit how much torque you can use, but rather the vehicle dynamics would, if you break traction then you’re not going to reach peak torque, if you get the vehicle moving then you’re not gonna reach peak torque. It’s like amperage on an electric circuit, maybe you can get 1000 amps out of a socket, but if you plug into that socket something that takes only 5 amps at the voltage of that socket then you are just gonna use 5 amps, even if you have the full 1000 available. In this case, the vehicle has ~40,000 nm but can only take a few of those because of its limitations.
@eric4946
@eric4946 4 года назад
I don’t think they’ll bother limiting the power by gear. 1. You generally don’t use a lot of power/throttle when crawling anyways and you’re going so slow it’s basically like free revving the engine. 2. Unless you hook the thing up to some sort of locked hub dyno the tire will just slip before you get to the insane wheel torque 3. I’d be more concerned about someone pushing in the clutch going down hill and releasing it after the thing gets going at 10 mph and the flywheel is spinning 10k rpm. I wouldn’t be surprised if the car has enough kinetic energy to overspeed the engine way past redline and blow it up.
@miguelcontreras5782
@miguelcontreras5782 4 года назад
robert rochacz there’s a bit of truth on what you are saying, if the threads managed to create some sort of mechanical connection with the terrain then yes, the maximum amount of force that you can put into the ground increases, however this rarely occurs, and in terrain with loose particles (dirt, sand, etc...) the frictional coefficient is greatly reduced when compared to asphalt due to how “fluid” those terrains are.
@miguelcontreras5782
@miguelcontreras5782 4 года назад
MOTO/R/SPORT NEJ generally modern engines, even those coupled with manual transmissions have protection against over revving, however, even if this one doesn’t have it, it’s more likely that the engines resistance to spinning at those higher speeds would apply such a high braking force at the tires that they would break traction before damaging the engine Edit: Also, the flywheel generally spins with the engine not with the transmission, so accumulating speed while going downhill with the clutch pushed wouldnt spin the flywheel

It is also about being able to do things much slower, without having to use the clutch but still having enough torque and rpm not to stall, while having the ability to move slowly so that you can ensure good line, clearance, and traction. The 2021 Ford Bronco's "Clever Crawler Gear" works almost exactly as the reduction gearbox (the "low range" option) works in any other decent 4x4 vehicle. It has been used by off-road vehicles for at least 100 years. But the explanation on why and how it is useful is very nice, congratulations.

He gave you three numbers. Multiply them all together. According to him that = 95:1. That is a super deep "final" gear ratio. Most Jeeps and old square body Chevys with the deepest/lowest "factory" gears "most were equipt with" are only around 50:1 - 70:1. Ratios around 100:1 are great for rock crawling - that's it. This Bronco went hard to the old school in the gearing dept. They're aiming for the Jeep Rubicon and Toyota 4x4 market. However with those gears he optioned it with, that vehicle won't be going anywhere fast soon. And, it'll be screaming and chugging fuel. I didn't really pay attention to the higher gear ratios, but you can run in higher gears and that'll compensate for better MPG and highway speed. The second and third boxes he described.... nobody cars about. 1st and 4th boxes are what I wrote about.

The manual V6 would probably be about as fiscally responsible as setting a pile of money on fire and charging 50 cents for admission to watch when only about 6 people have any sort of interest in the world's most expensive bonfire. The number of people who *say* they'd buy X car with Y engine and a manual transmission are far, far greater than the number of people who actually go through with it. The bean counters have determined that catering to the "wants a V6 manual" market would be a net loss.
@motormind2
@motormind2 4 года назад
My guess is they designed the entire manual transmission (crawler gear included) around the I4 engine, along with transfer case etc. The V6 would deliver more torque and power to the transmission and transfer case than the I4 engine so they would need to make a whole new system to suit the extra power coming from the V6 engine. Plus most people don't know how to use a clutch pedal and will purchase the I4 or V6 w/ 10-speed automatic transmission so it's not worth the investment for Ford.
