My air dryer was toward the front of the the truck by the front tire. After two or three Winters resulting in my air ride valves freezing up on the truck I decided to call Bendix and talk to an engineer. He told me without the new Adis system that do need approximately 27 ft of airline in order to get the hot air from the air compressor to cool down and fully condensate before the water gets to the air dryer so the air dryer would actually be effective in its process of removing the maximum amount of condensation build up. So I relocated the air dryer to the passenger side of the truck and moving back and extended the airline to approximately 20 ft. This resulted in a lot better results my truck did not freeze up in the winter and I had almost no moisture collecting in the first tank thanks to the engineers from Bendix

Rick is very good at explaining how things work. Why are my air tanks full of moister every day? I have a 2010 freightliner. I have reconditioned the purge valve, changed the filter, still full of water throughout the system. I drain the air tanks every day and they are full of moisture each time.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 лет назад
Hi Robert Rinaldi - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. Did you solve the mystery yet? Is the air compressor on you unit liquid cooled from the radiator system? That's the only thing I can think of. Is your vehicle fitted with an alcohol evaporator? There has to be a source of liquid some where on the system which is being drawn into the air brake system. That sound like way too much water. Let me know. All the best, Cheers Rick
@robertrinaldi8748
@robertrinaldi8748 6 лет назад
Thanks for your response Rick. When I said the system is full of water, I probably should have said it's full of moisture. There is so much moisture than some of it comes out as drips of water. Anyhow, I think I have found the problem. Although I had reconditioned the purge valve, it is not purging properly. I must have put it together wrong. I'm going to take it out and have another crack at it and hopefully I will do it properly this time. Thanks again Rick.

between the engine's air compressor and the first air tank. The air dryer filters the air brake tanks so less debris gets into the air tanks. Even when there is an air dryer it doesn't mean the tanks will not gain more moisture. Emptying the air tanks DAILY will prevent any more moisture buildup and cause fewer problems.

sorry for all the questions but it's a very interesting subject to me.........once more please about the one tank filling first and then the other............do the air lines supplying the primary and secondary tanks sense which tank has the lowest pressure and fills that tank first and then the other tank bringing them both up to 125 lbs. or is there some component in this system that i am not aware of. ? thankyou very much
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 лет назад
Hi yard limit - Thank you for your comment and query. I'm not a 100% sure of this answer; however, I believe that the primary tank fills first, but only to about 90psi. The reason that the primary fills first is to give enough pressure to quickly release the parking brakes. Once the primary tank fills to approximately 90psi, then the secondary tank fills to 90psi, and then the system brings both tanks to maximum pressure. Saying that, most newer trucks aren't going to lose a lot of air overnight, so you're not going to notice an air loss of any significance - only if the vehicle has been sitting for a period of time. And yes, the governor is connected to the gauges that communicate air pressure in the tanks. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@yardlimit8695
@yardlimit8695 6 лет назад
two more questions please..........thanks for answering the first one............on the ADIS system why does one reservoir fill first and then the other. what causes this to happen and what is it about the newer air dryers that makes them superior so that they don't need the wet tank. thanks again.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 лет назад
Hi yard limit - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. The reason that one tank and fills and then the other doesn't have a purpose - it's just a feature of the ADIS system. And the reason that this system doesn't require a wet tank is because the newer air dryers are effective in ridding the air of moisture. And because moisture is no longer a problem, engineers eliminated the wet tank owing to sufficient volume of air in the primary and secondary tanks. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Can a clogged air dryer filter keep the system from charging above 45 psi,?Bendix 800089. 2006 Columbia.Detroit. Traced the line from the compressor with soapy water, seemed OK. @azznbad1
@azznbad1 3 года назад
Depending on your system it sounds to me like an unloader valve kit may be needed. There are two kinds of unloaders. One located in the head of the compressor. The other is in the dryer its self. If the unloader doesn't work right rather than being in the load or unload position its stuck between and can not build enough air. Unless the compressor is total shot it will pump air, and you just need to figure out why. A leak in the line coming from the compressor doesn't even have to be audible to prevent the truck from building air. I've had that happen on units with branded steel lines.

@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 4 года назад
Hi Chip Jackson - Thank you for your comment. Is 105 psi what's in the manual, or is it what's accepted by authorities? Most manuals that I've read all say 80 psi for the absolute minimum, but authorities all go with 105. All the best, Cheers Rick
@chipjackson7398
@chipjackson7398 4 года назад
Smart Drive Test I’m talking about governor cut out. Must be between 105-135psi. You mentioned that the maximum is between 100-135. The trouble with this is that if your maximum is 100 and if the governor is set at a 20psi range before cutting back in, with a 1900lb rated spring, your spring brakes are actually “beginning ” to apply by the time the compressor starts building air again. In B.C., your governor unload is to between 105-135 for this reason.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 4 года назад
Hi Chip Jackson - Thank you for your response. And you're absolutely correct my friend. But just to confuse everyone, the manual states that the ABSOLUTE minimum that an air brake equipped vehicle's governor must return the compressor to the load phase is 80psi. It's on pg 161 of the old commercial manual. But you're right, here in BC, we pump down the 90psi and see if the compressor begins to load. And it's going to be tough to explain this to students, because when they take their test at ICBC, it's going to be looking for that 80psi number. All the best, Cheers Rick

rick, i promise,,,,,,my last question........not even sure if it applies since you are talking about air dryers,,,,,,but here it goes............with 2 tanks in the system ,,,,,,primary secondary.,,,,,when one tank drops below 90 lbs. and the other is full how does the governor sense ONE low tank and load the compressor to fill it. in your diagram i see only ONE governor sensing line from the primary tank back to the compressor. what am i missing here. sorry again for all the questions.

Hi yard limit - Thank you for your comment. Always happy to answer questions my friend. It is the pressure gauges - there is one on the primary, and one on the secondary tank. And due to the maximum and minimum settings of the governor, the system probably won't drop below 105psi before the governor begins to fill whichever tank is the lower setting close to that setting. There are series of valves and hoses, but simplistically speaking both tanks have to be at maximum air pressure before the governor will put the compressor into the unload phase. This video may help with understanding minimum and maximum settings of the governor and compressor: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dMxilatT0qw.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

what does the governor in close proximity to the air dryer have to do with it being an ADIS/ thanks.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 лет назад
Hi yard limit - Thank you for your comment and query. The reason that the governor is close to the air dryer in an ADIS system is because this system "combines the air dryer, purge reservoir, governor, and a number of the charging valve components in a single module." If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

rick , i still don't get it........whether you have an older system or an ADIS,,,,,,you still have a primary and a secondary tank.......when one tank becomes too low what is there in the system to tell the governor to load the compressor and fill the lowest pressurized tank. here's my problem'''''''''''''''if the primary system becomes too low and the secondary system is still full how can the low air pressure in the primary system tell the governor to load the compressor and pump air to fill the primary tank. i hope i made myself clear with my wording..........DOES THE GOVERNOR SENSE THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SYSTEMS INDIVIDUALLY AND IF SO WHAT COMPONENT IN THE SYSTEM ALLOWS THIS TO HAPPEN. THANKS............

Hi Rick. My truck air dryer purges at normal pressure but once it cuts off it keeps purging . I've recently replace the metal cover hose from compressor to air dryer. Any advice please

Thank you for the informative video! I had a question however. I don’t drive my truck commercially (old military truck) but I will be modifying my intake system on my truck that will result in a higher moisture content. I do of course have a wet tank system and was wondering if the air could possibly keep up with moisture removal, and if not, would one of the newer air driers have a better chance? I deleted my aftercooled intake plenum in favor of a intake plenum shell that I will install water/methanol injection on, hence the higher moisture content. I will only be using enough water injection to keep my EGTs under better control.

Hi Abdou Shipping - Thank you for your comment and query. I suspect it has something to do with the unloader valve which connects that air dryer to the governor. You're going to have an ADIS system, so that's going to explain the difference in pressure of the the 2 tanks. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

@@smartdrivetest thank you very much for your reply sire. I replaced air dryer recently . Hi Abdou Shipping - Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, beyond helping you to troubleshoot, I'm not going to be able to have a look at the truck. Have you tried putting the old air dryer on and see if it is still purging every 5-10 minutes. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Mack Anderson - Thank you for your comment. It might be the air dryer, but it doesn't make sense if one tank is filling and the other isn't. Did the technician give you a reason for the air dryer do that - causing one tank to fill and not the other? All the best, Cheers Rick

What is the function of the electrical connection on the air dryer?

It's a heater. Sorry, just found this vid. 😏
@davidmorse8432
@davidmorse8432 2 года назад
@@dgronzega8073 Thanks! So the heater keeps trapped water from freezing in cold ambient temperatures? I was thinking that there was some kind of moisture sensor there to tell the dryer to purge moisture because sometimes mine will purge repeatedly and get the compressor pumping again. A mystery to me. It mostly happens after we have had a good rain.

my Purge Kit blew out the bottom of my air dryer. Taken along the Dome donut that locks it in, is that Dome donut replaceable? Also how can I bypass the air dryer in the meantime? 2012 freightliner. my air dryer is on the driver side in the engine compartment.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 7 лет назад
Hi Willie Robbins - thank you for your comment. That vehicle will probably have an ADIS system - is the governor within close proximity to the air dryer? If so, I don't think you can bypass the air dryer because you'll be also bypassing the governor and need that to control the compressor. And even if you could bypass the air dryer, it would probably be easier to fix the air dryer than to jury rig the air lines to bypass the air dryer. If the dome donut is part of the filter, than yes, it should be replaceable. My suggestion would be to talk to Freightliner - they will be able to give you the specific information. Thanks, Cheers Rick

What if it keeps purging every 3 to 4 minutes?
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 лет назад
Hi Shitlocks - Thank you for your comment and query. The air dryer's signal to purge comes from the governor. So if the system's purging in those short intervals, I suspect you have something wrong with the governor - that would be my first check. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
