I am honestly thankful that the rest of the band grinded through those sessions. Because I love this song. It just strikes the right chord with me. Something about the juxtaposition of a cheery song about a serial killer is such a novel idea, and it’s very captivating to me. I’m glad McCartney stuck with it.

Yes, whenever the lightbulb comes on and you realize, what is the phrase: how can something so wrong feel so right? Then you get the genius of this song and all the pain McCartney inflicted (with some satisfaction, no doubt) on the rest of the band. I loved it, once I stopped fighting it.

An overdub. An example could be Because on Abbey Road. John, Paul and George sang a three part harmony, and then overdubbed the same parts twice. So there are 9 vocals done by 3 people.

I think some of the charm of the Beatles is Paul’s so-called “granny music”. Paul was encouraged by his father to become a musician. Much of the music Paul heard around the house was of his father’s era, the British “music hall” type music of the early twentieth century, similar to the American “vaudeville” music of the time. These were variety type theater shows that included comedy skits, music, and other entertainment. Paul simply wrote some songs in this style because it was something he was familiar with and enjoyed. Honey Pie, When I’m Sixty-four, Your Mother Should Know, Maxwell’s Silver Hammer among others all would find themselves right at home at these “music hall” shows.

@labajadaman And I LOVE EVERY ONE of those songs that Paul did, and it always upset me that so many people would make fun of them. WHY? The Beatles were always known for their versatility in their music and songs. THAT is what made their albums so interesting and fun. All the songs on them were different....something for EVERYONE, and not just the same style of song over and over again. For me, their music NEVER got boring. I couldn't wait for each new album to come out, and to see what each track would "have to say." Paul gets a bad rap sometimes that I don't really think he deserves. A lot of time was spent on songs that WEREN'T Paul's as well, so no one should be pointing fingers.

I think a part you're missing is John and yoko didn't show up is probably because they were both using heroin at that time and he even said. We didn't know what 'state ' he'd be in. It's after yoko miscarriaged and they were depressed and in a bad state
@seanwade8188

They used to record onto tape back then. Once you’d put one instrument down on tape as a groundwork, you could layer more sounds on top of it afterwards. This could be vocals, guitar parts, percussion. Overdubbing just means recording a new layer on top of the old recording

Yeah an major props to Paul for holding the band together in their late years. Another music legend and him and John together with big assists from George Martin and George and Ringo made tru magic the kind that will never be replicated ever.

I think you’re 100% correct that the other Beatles should have told John they wanted him to join in. John was insecure and being with Yoko at that time made him retreat from his old friendships to be with her instead. Paul let him do it and didn’t suggest to John that he wanted to spend more time with him. And also when John told Paul he was leaving the group after Abbey Road came out, Paul said nothing! I fully think John was expecting Paul to try to persuade him to not leave, but he didn’t! He didn’t speak with John for months. I think the Beatles would never have broken up if they had better communication skills with each other. Because both Paul and John blamed each other for the breakup, and were very hurt. But if they’d talked about it more they would have stayed together I think
@patticrichton1135
@patticrichton1135 4 месяца назад
BUT John would get very angry with them if they complained about Yoko always being at the recording sessions. Before that they always had a rule that no wives or girlfriends would be allowed into the sessions unless they needed them to contribute something to the vocals. SO it bothered the other 3 when Yoko was always there, and they COULDN'T say anything negative to John about her being there. John wouldn't hear it. John and Yoko were joined at the hip, I heard they would follow each other every where, even to the bathroom if one of them needed to go. She was always sitting right next to John. John could also be very jealous too, which would cause him to be grumpy. He was a complicated guy, and a lot of it had to do with his rough childhood. Paul and George were lucky enough to grow up in a loving family atmosphere. Yes, Paul lost his mother to cancer when he was 14, just as John's mother was killed when he was 17, but Paul had a LARGE extended family who helped Paul's dad Jim take care of Paul and his brother Michael. John had a lot of trauma in his formative years, which stayed with him through adult hood. No matter what, they still would have broke up eventually, even if not when they actually did. They were all growing up, had their own families now, they had lived in each others back pocket for years when they were in their late teens and through the touring years. THAT is when they were really tight with each other, because they were the only ones who KNEW what they were going through during the "Beatlemania" years. Stuck in cars, hotels, and touring while having to write songs, do TV and radio appearances, countless interviews, and squeezing in recording sessions and making their two movies and all those promo films. They never had much time off. It's lucky they were so young while doing that, I can't imagine if they were in their 30s or older and trying to maintain that whirlwind and jammed packed schedule. They were exhausted and naturally growing apart after they stopped touring and constantly being together. SO I don't see it continuing on as a group at that point. They all wanted to do their own thing. Look at the amount of material they gave the world in just 7 1/2 years as a working band. It's amazing.

Overdubs are done by recording one part, say a vocal, then playing it back while recording another part. When the parts are in sync it sounds like two distinct vocals in harmony. The great Les Paul pioneered this technique twenty years before the Beatles started recording, but they made it part of their process and really turned it into a common practice in the mid-sixties. Pretty soon everyone was doing it. The Beatles were a great live band, but got disenchanted with stadium concerts because they couldn't hear themselves over the screaming fans. They pretty much invented stage monitors for live shows, but soon quit live performance and devoted their energy to studio work. That's when they started experimenting with these novel recording techniques.

Gotta' do Lennon's solo stuff if you haven't yet. "I don't believe in Beatles. I just believe in me. Yoko and me". But take all his 1970's dissing of Paul with grain of salt. They had business problems and that's what had John saying negative stuff about him. Luckily they burried the hatchet before John died. (Maybe you know all this.)

Overdub is when they go back and record a clean track (of vocals or lead guitar for example) to layer over a beginning scratch track to help perfect parts of songs. ps: I want you she's so heavy is John's song. Ok so John was pulling back from the Beatles because he found his true love in Yoko and was absolutely obsessed with her even to the point of criminally neglecting his son by Cynthia Julian something he def regretted for the rest of his life. This can never btw take away from his great later contribs like I Am The Walrus, A Day in the Life, Come Together, everything he did on the White Album, etc. A truly unique personality scarred by his very difficult upbringing who persisted to become a music legend. Major props to Mr Lennon.

When John was given a word association about he was give the other three Beatles names. Ringo=friend George=lost and Paul= Extraordinary. John loved Paul and talked out his arse a lot. In his last interview taken the day he died he said. I picked Paul because I knew he was talented. He said I did this knowing I have told him work to keep him in his place. He said Paul pick George and George picked Ringo. He said I’ve only pick two partners in my life Paul and Yoko. He said as a talent scout I done a hell of a job. At the end of the Beatles John was hooked on heroin. Then Paul sued the Beatles to break them up. Which saved their money from Alan Klein the manager John picked. So a lot of those interviews happen at a bad time but they all loved each other. Listen to the podcast Another Kind of Mind. Their series on the Get Back sessions tell you more about this period of time.

Paul wrote stories about other people, like Eleanor Rigby and Lady Madonna. Many more, but you get the meaning. Some people say John is more deep because he writes about himself. Just as John said in the video. Now I love John's music. I love Paul's music. But, to me, it's like someone only writing their own autobiography. Paul writes short stories. Sometimes you might be in the mood to keep reading someone talking about themselves, and other times you might want to read a story with a different depth. Stories about fictional characters and their lives.

I never disliked this song, always just thought it was a funny track. Humorous, odd songs is nothing new to the Beatles especially later on in their careers. And they were generally a bunch of goofy dudes so I never really felt it was that out of place on the album. It's definitely not something I would throw on just because, but I do think the album would be worse without it. It adds another kind of listening experience to the project and shows the diversity of the band even if it's not gonna resonate strongly with many people.
@patticrichton1135

@BT405, yes I agree. How about "WHAT"S THE NEW MARY JANE" that they did. That is way more "goofy" than "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and it is HILARIOUS, Paul and John doing different voices, and "lounge lizard" type singing, Some people think HOW could they put out something like THAT? Well, that tells me right there, that those people don't really know much about the Beatles and their sense of humor, and how they could be silly and do silly songs if they wanted to. ANYONE who watched Peter Jackson's "GET BACK" can see all the goofy things they sang and did in the middle of those recording sessions. It was part of their CHARM....not always taking themselves seriously.

The magic behind the Beatles was. John was all serious & melon-colony. Paul was upbeat & bubbly. They balanced each other out. Sgt. 'Peppers - A day in the life' is a good example. It starts off so serious & kinda depressing. Paul bubbles it up in the middle. John finishe it off with his melon-colony vibe. When they wrote music together, you can tell what parts John added.

John was absent from the Abbey Road sessions because of the accident, Yoko, drugs and because… he quit! They did try talking to him. By John’s own admission, he was an ass, a liar, (and while he loved Paul,) he was jealous of Paul. I’m not an Lennon apologist like many Beatles fans. Learning more about him was the biggest disappointment of my Beatles deep dive. And I love George but he became a real bitter Betty. George also complained that John never helped him with his songs (unless he wanted something, like for Allen Klein to manage the group - their downfall.) Paul was the workhorse, the innovator, the genius. You should really watch the “Understanding Lennon/McCartney” series on RU-vid. It’s all in their own words and so well done!
@RicoCosta317
@RicoCosta317 6 месяцев назад
Everything's not always black and white bro. Yeah John had largely checked out in the latter years because of finding Yoko his true love and mother figure, and Paul almost singlehandedly kept the band together. But you can't ignore that his complex personality was majorly formed by his bitterness toward his horrible upbringing and his conflicting feelings toward his mother who had abandoned him. Am quite sure that because of this and the fact that he was a genius perfectionist made him pure hell to work with times. But you can never deny that his genius combined with Paul's and George Martin's with huge assists from George and Ringo, made pure magic happen the likes of which will never ever he seen again. You don't have to be a Lennon "apologist" bro, but please don't be a Lennon hater either.

Oh also if you never heard his first solo Plastic Ono Band you really should. It will give you great insight into how tortured he was over his mother and his fame with the Beatles and how his live for Yoko helped heal him. Easily the most bare bones personal albums anyone ever did and one of great ones ever recorded.

@@RicoCosta317 Hi. I’m well aware of John’s sh*tty childhood. It was horrible BUT not unique to him. Many, if not most, people have crappy childhoods. In fact, I’d say my Dad’s childhood was even worse than John’s. He didn’t beat people up, didn’t hit his wife, and didn’t intimidate people to the point where they walked on eggshells around him. At some point, we have to grow and let the chip on our shoulders go. I’m not a hater but I will not excuse how he treated others, especially Paul. Especially in the early 70s. It took him way too long to stop taking his issues out on others, and he even admitted that. And it wasn’t self-serving Yoko who actually helped him, it was May Pang. That’s when the real change happened. I’ve listened to all their post Beatles music (except Ringo’s.) I’m not a fan of much of John’s solo work but that has nothing to do with him being tortured. I just don’t like the music. I wasn’t alive for The Beatles but I grew up listening to them because of my Beatles-loving family. And I started actually studying them 4 years ago. I cherish them and all of their contributions to it, but Paul was in fact the driving force. I would also recommend you watch the ‘Understanding Lennon-McCartney’ series here on RU-vid. 5 parts, all in their own words. Take care.

@@reinacarbetta388 Yeah I don't have to watch that I know all about it. Yeah they had a stormy relationship at times and John could be a prick but so what, don't you think that all genius creative types who collab go through that same typa thing and that Paul was man enough to handle it and truly loved and respected John in spite of all? You need only watch the Now and Then video to see his utter joy and delight in bringing him--and George--back to life so to speak and it's clear that John had the same feels for Paul. And I'm sorry, I've never been the biggest McCartney fan in the world but I or anyone would be a damn fool not to acknowledge his greatness both with and after the Beatles, and what a truly great man he became, a chance that btw John never fully had because his light and life was snuffed out by some murderous psycho. And to just brush off his tormented upbringing like he should have just manned up an got over it, and to flat out refuse to admit even grudgingly his equal greatness is classless and clueless and really just massive disrespect to the millions who were touched by his artistry and miss him deeply. And that sad to say is the exact definition of a hater for real. Peace, you could use some, and maybe you could pick up some much needed wisdom along the way as well.

@@RicoCosta317 I’m not a hater, you’re an apologist. And Paul’s a Lennon apologist! You know all about ‘Understanding Lennon-McCartney’ but won’t watch it? Interesting response. It’s in THEIR WORDS, so perhaps you don’t want to hear it? Like I said, I have empathy for John’s upbringing, but don’t excuse his behavior. It’s not a “man up” response, it’s a “don’t take your mommy issues out on everyone in your life or anyone around you” response. Of course it probably fueled his musical genius, and I’ve never denied that he was, but it doesn’t make it right. Yes, the magic was in the 4 of them together. I cherish them (and come on now, I have watched ‘Now and Then’ and everything Beatles related dozens, if not hundreds of times.) I know Paul and John loved each other, of course, and that their relationship was complex and complicated. It’s a story so fascinating that people are still analyzing it 60 years later. But if the truth about John as a man, or my feelings about it, “disrespect” your feelings about John, that’s a you issue. Also, your assumption that I’m not wise because I won’t praise or excuse abusive behavior is 🤨 Take care.

Paul wanted to record the song, the others did not. I think that the biggest reason George, John and Ringo hated the song is because the session was too long, too boring and that coloured their feelings of the song forever. After a few tries they probably wanted to stop the sessions, but Paul insisted. Therefor the disappointment and hate for the song.
