⁸The blond girl on the train was Patty Boyd. George met her on set. They married. Something was written about her. And a lot of Eric Claptoo sings. Eric was his best friend. Eric later married Patty. One of the kids in the theater crowd was a very young Phil Collins of Genesis. "You Can't Do Thst" is a great making of doc that is on RU-vid. When you finish all the Beatles recordings, do Love for "The Circe de Soleil show. There are some fantastic remixes on there.

The "very clean" line was an running joke regarding the actor playing Paul's grandfather, Wilfrid Brambell. He had played Albert in the BBC sitcom Steptoe and Son (the original program that 'Sanford and Son' was later based upon), and the running joke on the show was that he was a "dirty old man". Just one of those "Ah-ha" jokes that has been mostly lost to time.

Another angle is that it was common back then for older people to dismiss younger people in a back handed way by admitting that at least they were clean. You can see that in the initial reaction the stuffy guy in the train has to John Lennon, whose hair was considered long at the time, ie. "mop tops". So the running joke flips that on its head too.

Actually the it's got more of an in joke than that, there was one time that Paul McCartney was running late for a group interview as he was still taking a bath. Brian Epstein was fretting about it when George Harrison made a joke about him being very clean

The sgt pepper's movie is not canon and it was made by the bee gees. They were one of the most popular group in the 70s and some people thought they were bigger than the beatles and the movie was meant to be the crowning of their success.(spoiler: it bombed) No comments needed. The canon movies are AHDN, Help!, Magical Mistery Tour, Yellow Submarine (my personal favorite bc it's a psychedelic cartoon) and the Get Back series if you take it as the official let it be film. The anthology series are very interesting too bc it's the Band's story told by the beatles themselves.

One of the best decisions the Beatles made was hiring Richard Lester to direct this film. He was an American working in London famous for his campy, surrealistic comedy style. He worked with Peter Sellers before the Beatles and John Lennon was a big fan of his. Many of the techniques in this film inspired early music videos. In fact, MTV gave him an award as “Father of the Music Video”. The combination of Lester’s cinematic style and the Beatles’ natural sense of humor was magic.

The blonde girl first seen @ 7:29 is Pattie Boyd - who met George on the set of this movie and they would eventually marry. George wrote SOMETHING for her, among other songs. Eric Clapton fell in love with Pattie and by 1970 had written LAYLA (with himself as Derek) and BELL BOTTOM BLUES (an underrated song) for her, but it didn't work... at least not right away. Eric would spiral out of control, selling his prize guitars to get heroin, before turning himself around with the album "461 Ocean Blvd' (his bungalow in Miami). Eric and Pattie would marry a couple of years later, and Eric would write WONDERFUL TONIGHT for her. One day, Eric was walking in NYC to see his young son, only to find ambulances outside the building, he had died after falling many stories out an open window. So he wrote TEARS IN HEAVEN. A whole lot of beautiful songs have been born from heartbreak and tragedy, probably the only silver lining there is to that particular cloud.

This movie was huge. It was written when the writer spent a few days with them and he depicted what it was like to be them. The grandfather was a big start on tv in England. In that show, he plays a dirty old man. So, it was funny that they kept saying he was a clean old man. Most theaters had to stop the film because the screaming was so loud, no one could hear it.

They didn't stop the movie in any of the theaters I saw it in, they just let us scream. It was full of us teenager and preteen girls anyway, so it was our first SEEING them on that BIG SCREEN, and we just couldn't help but scream. LOL! We would just watch it over and over during the whole time it ran in the theaters and eventually was able to hear the dialogue.

The Beatles were just naturally funny, man. If you haven't seen it already the 'Get Back' documentary shows just how important clowning around was for them. They gave themselves only 3 weeks to write, rehearse, record & perform the album that ended up being called Let It Be. You would think there would be a sense of panic or at least some urgency given the deadline but the big take away from that movie was just how much joking and silliness there was throughout (and this during their so-called "break-up" period too). Goofing off was clearly important to them and was the best environment for their creativity. So even though others view them with serious reverence I don't think The Beatles ever took themselves too seriously, and this casualness was part of their charm.

We had to get special tickets to see this when it was releasedin San Antonio. I was 10 and my sister was 11. Mom couldn't even get us tickets in the same theater. Anyhow I was in the balcony and everybody in the theater was probably 16 years old or less and almost all girls. As soon as that first cord hit everybody started screaming😮Didn't get to hear much of the movie that day and it was like Nothing I had ever experienced before. The vibe was insane.

The way the script was written was a writer went on tour with them for a few weeks and just saw how they interacted. That's why it really feels like them. Obviously the grandfather was just a thing they wrote in and cast, but even the manager and his assistant are loosely based on their real manager Brian Epstein and The Beatles one & only roadie Mal Evans who really was tall and stuck with them all the way through Let It Be. Also keep in mind that the sarcasm and "cheekiness" and fighting with cops and authority was really unheard of in a pop movie in 1964. Obviously as the civil rights movement and the hippie movement and the woman's liberation movement advanced through the decade those things changed very quickly. But the Beatles playful disrespect of authority both in their style and in this little movie specifically was one of the main sparks that got the revolutionary vibe of the 60's going.

I've been a Beatles fan since 1964 when they first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. One thing that I learned about them early on is that they are the least pretentious superstars ever. They were able to laugh at themselves and occasionally sing silly songs (see Rocky Racoon, Yellow Submarine, etc) without worrying about what anyone thought. I'm enjoying your reactions very much. But, don't assume that they're always taking themselves or their music seriously. Also, even though I'm happy that the Beatles are being appreciated by younger generations, unless you lived through that time, you'll never fully appreciate the impact that they had on western culture. We all waited impatiently for their next record and to see what to emulate next. They guided western culture through the 1960s, and will continue to be musically influential for centuries, literally.

Yes, we started to grow our hair long (over the tops of our ears) because of the Beatles. Beatle boots were a rage for a while. I remember in grade school talking with a Liverpool accent, and before this movie came out. The Beatles tacitly gave us permission to be different from the status quo, which ushered in a whole new era.

BTW, in the 60s their fans really did chase them and tried to take souvenirs, like handfuls of hair and bits of there clothing, if they got their hands on them. Saying he’s clean is a running gag; meaning it’s a continuous thread throughout the film. It’s a play on the term “dirty old man” because he’s constantly referred to as the old man then “what a clean old man…” I love when younger people get into the Beatles and I really enjoy your videos. You are very astute. I really like your take on the White Album and you are correct for saying it sounds like the individuals instead of the group and that it was the beginning of the deterioration. You say you know Sgt. Pepper, Revolver and Rubber Soul but no videos for those (at least here). You’ll notice that She Loves You is in the film but not on the album. It was released as a single because the Beatles didn’t want to charge fans for songs on albums so they could get their money’s worth. All non album singles make up two albums called Past Masters volumes 1 and 2. 1 is 1963-66 and 2 is 1967-70.

Darius I hope you read this. The “idea” of Beatlemania was created by the Beatles in this movie. Its theatre release was timed to follow their Ed Sullivan TV debut performance. Once their tv show blew up the music universe American fans HAD to see this movie. After those two things were rolling, the crowds and mania ruled the entire world. There really isn’t a way to describe it, but think of this. These for guys were revered all over the world. All at once. I encourage you to keep going down this rabbit hole. A diff content provider took the approach of reacting to every song to hit the charts, in order. Another did every album in order. How are you goings about it?

Maybe someone else commented this, but I couldn’t find it. The Clean joke was a reference to the actor who played Paul’s grandfather who was famous at the time for the character he played on a sitcom called Steptoe and Son (the British inspiration for Sanford and Son) who was called a “dirty old man” throughout the show. That reference doesn’t really play as well to a modern audience who aren’t familiar with that show.

So this film has been added to the Criterion Collection of films….only the very best films are chosen for this special collection of films. The board of film critics and scholars chooses certain films that qualify. This film was chosen because it is very historical. And the storyline was really what the Beatles lives were like at that time when they were touring… they were fairly new celebrities at the time, but they were considered a phenomenon, even then. To get a film contract in their first year….pretty crazy! Anyway, the crowds chased them everywhere and surrounded their hotels and they had to have security to keep them safe from the crowds, and decoy cars, etc. Every city required them to do a press conference where the newspaper journalists would ask them silly questions. And the cities elites would throw a party for them which they had to attend. They had rehearsals and sometimes they had to try to sneak out to go anywhere besides their hotel. So this wasn’t a documentary. But they played themselves. The second film they made was HELP!

The day they filmed the scene in the field (with "Can't Buy Me Love" playing), Lennon had to leave for an event promoting the release of his book "In His Own Write". That's why some of the shots are from a distance, from overhead, or you only see McCartney, Harrison, and Starr. Richard Lester filled in so there would be four people in the shots from overhead.

One of the young women in the beginning played by Pattie Boyd, George ended marrying. In fact they met on the set of this film.

I personally like the Beatles “Help!” movie more. It’s in color, has a bit more of a plot (despite still being very silly) And I personally enjoy the music from the “Help!” album more than “A Hard Days Night”

27:10 - they definitley hadn't tried weed yet when this was made. we know the exact date they first tried it. this movie was filmed march/april 1964 and they first smoked weed with Bob Dylan on August 28th 1964. they were def stoned for the entirety of the Help! movie though. get baked for that one lol edit: typo

@@amyb1078 that was during their Hamburg gigs, before they became famous, and where they had to play 8 hours a day/night, which was taxing on them, so the Germans would give them speed to keep them awake. I never heard that they used it after they became famous.

The offbeat humor is similar to Marx Brothers movies like A Night at the Opera, with John channeling Groucho and Ringo as Harpo. Ringo got critical acclaim for his performance, which critics compared to Charlie Chaplin in the "parading" sequence. Bob Dylan turned them onto pot around 1965, and then turned Dylan onto LSD around 1966. The "clean old man" joke was just riffing on the cliche about a " dirty old man."

"he's smelling that coke"...lol!!!!!.. .he's pretending to snort it... of course we didn't get that joke when we were 10 years old... when we saw the movie, the girls were screaming so loud everytime there was a close up of one of the Beatles it was hard to hear the movie.... the movie was so popular, you had to buy your ticket and then wait in a line up that went right around a city block, , and stand in the line through a complete showing of the film before it was your turn to get in! At this point in 1964 the Beatles ruled the world!! It was Beatlemania. The scene of them running around that open field during Can't Buy Me Love is pretty much the template for every music video ever since. Everything the Beatles did seemed to be groundbreaking. A Hard Day's Night is so great that some people speak critically of their next movie, Help!, but don't let that deter you... it's also great!

Hey I was 17 when "A Hard Day's Night" was in the theater and I didn't "get" the snorting coke thing that John was doing, we just thought it was funny because he was sniffing the bottle. Some of us (likely a LOT of us) didn't know about cocaine and all that stuff back in '64.

You should check out the hippie counterculture antiwar film Hair. Great music too. One of the most iconic 60s/70s films, originally a off-Broadway musical.

OK !!! First the clean joke about the Papa, in England at the time there was a tv show this man starred in where he played a junk yard owner .The character he plays was always dirty. This show would come to the US later and be the basis for a show known as Sanford and Son. The actor was a very dapper guy ALWAYS well dressed to the point that fans would wait for him after the show for autographs and he would walk right by them because out of character no one knew what he looked like. Clean...Very Clean ! I wanted you to see this movie because you started your Beatles Quest at the end and worked backwards . the early stuff was written for the Tweens at the time ( All the little screamin' memes you see at the show.) After 1966 the Beatles stopped touring and just went to writing and recording due to the lack of tech . the live stuff got to be TOOO big and the sound systems etc. were not up to the job ( tech would not come around till 1969 and Woodstock ). Once again ,Good job I hope you found the film enjoyable. Oh yeah Bob Dylan turned the Beatles on to pot the first time and music Changed ! Their dentist dosed them with LSD the first time without them knowing ( he thought they wouldn't mind ) I don't think they did.

Classic film btw some mixes of the songs played here were the correct speeds the Beatles had recorded at, the studio album version “A Hard Days Night” some songs George Martin sped up the tempo a bit for example “I should’ve known better & Tell Me Why” the album version is nice & fast, in the film the correct pitch is played in that live bit ending. also for fun if you have a copy on vinyl you can hear the fast temp songs at their correct pitch on your turntable if there is a control
