People often joke about "mom brain" after having a baby. Is it possible that instead of being pathologic, "mom brain" may have been the key to human survival? Learn about the amazing powers of the maternal brain. Lara Harvey MD, MPH obtained her medical degree and Master in Public Health from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Beth Israel Deaconess, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA followed. She returned to Nashville to complete a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
Now an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology within the Minimally Invasive Surgery Division at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, she sees patients needing surgery for benign gynecologic conditions such as fibroids, adnexal masses, abnormal bleeding and endometriosis. She also has a passion for global health and has spent a year in Mozambique with the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health and taught laparoscopic surgery in Haiti. Dr. Harvey is interested in gynecologic surgery and has published research on advanced and emerging surgical techniques.
She also is the Tennessee Section Legislative Chair for the American College of OBGYN.
Lara and her husband, Kevin, live in Brentwood, TN where they are raising their four children and a golden mountain doodle. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I've been following evolutionary psychology for years, and this fits right in. We are geared for survival, and protection of the vulnerable young is top on that list. It's sad that our culture is currently in a way 'erasing' women, women are bombarded with the subconscious message they should behave more like men. Men can be protective providers, but they don't tend to have the same instincts.
