In 2023 the locksmith I worked for was still doing actual paperwork in his daily life. Old school. Company was around since 70s. I will say, if the lights went out we could still do business.

@@irenelo3660 It's not because of age, its because of skillset. Here in the US the boomers the largest generation as a group have decided to not learn new skills, and technology. They got away with not knowing it for so long because they are the biggest and pushed their weight around, now they are getting pushed out for people with better more tech skillset. While they are also older, the real issue is the skillset. The reality is they do half the work in twice the time, and then aggressively talk about how hard they worked and how many hours they put in. Maybe you should post your country here so they folks can move there and get a pity job...

Not true. I am 50 years old. Have been in fore run job function such as transformation. And I am only out of job for 2 years during pandemic. But I feel it during the interview or when matching job against my background.. the feedback I receive has been you are too "senior" for this role, not sure it is about my "age" or "seniority ranking in organization chart".. btw, I was AVP ranking..

I think reverse agism is more common in my experience. I've worked with a number of 60+ colleagues who's skills are massively outdated and their 'experience' is actually a negative as they refuse to upskill and work on continuous improvement, and who are seen to be far more valuable than their younger colleagues despite delivering alot less value to the company. Some older accountants i've worked with hadn't kept up to date with changes in reporting standards and laws for years yet would mock younger colleagues for their lack of 'wisdom'. The key here is that any staff member who puts effort into their continuous development, adapts well to change and takes a proactive approach to their work will deliver value perpetually. Any staff member that stops focussing on improvement will eventually become irrelevant.

I realize that going from being an employee to owning a business is no small feat but unfortunately ageism in the workplace is real and not likely to change anytime soon .

There is definitely also ageism intersected with gender with women of an age expected to have children soon too. I even ageism and gender judge myself wondering if I deserve a job because I plan to have children soon and I feel a sense of guilt applying even though I’d have to provide for those children, and there’s no way of knowing how long it will take to get pregnant. It’s difficult because I know how hard of a worker I am.

Quite true. We, as elders, also have a first step to take to leave behind qualifying ourselves due to aging. Of course, it is true we cannot act as agile, as fast or as strong we used to, but that doesn’t mean necessarily that we have to retired completely and wait for the new generations to take care of us. We still have a lot to do so connections between generations do not become unbridgeable ditches. We simply have to acknowledge that we all, young and elders, have a voice that counts the same. I retired as an architect 7 years ago at 64 and now I am a part-time professor in my local university, together with other really young professors, as well as remote. That´s what I mean.

this society rejects people who are over a certain age who are looking for work because they have been fired or for other reasons no longer work, the retirement age has been extended, how can a person over 50 find a job if the entrepreneurs don't want to invest in an elderly person? is experience no longer needed? When I was younger and starting out they asked me for experience, now that I have more than 30 years of high-level professional work, I can't find anything anymore. the entrepreneurial mentality should change, the experience of a senior could be useful for the younger ones, as a guide, as a teaching, to lay the foundations for a good career path. this is not happening

Companies don’t want to pay more than they have to, and they don’t want the increasing risk of health issues as we all age. If you have a secure(ish) job where you can progress up the ladder for longer, you are insulated from this a little, as your expertise and responsibility level justifies the money and the increased risk of illness. But not forever. The same problem applies to women of child-bearing age. A young man will be cheaper, and probably healthier for longer. Young people could take less pay for a while in order to get into their preferred area. Older people with children etc can’t indulge themselves like this. So we all get more expensive to employ as we get older, whatever we do.

It might be narrow minded of me - but it's a little hard to listen to as a younger person. These job finding woes she describes? They are not indicative of age - last year it took me 6 months to find a new job after being laid off. While employment reports to be relatively low - the job market or at least: tech, in my experience has been a tough nut. Second, it's her generation that lived through some of the most prosperous years, cheap housing, expanding markets and reaping those rewards while gutting social programs they benefited from. Younger generations are struggling right now by every economic metric, cost of living has never been higher and it's because of the policies that have been put in place/voted for by her generation. Corporate and shareholder profits over all else - guess they didn't think about worker protections along the way - something that could have benefited EVERYBODY. These corporations catch ANY wiff of economic turmoil and they make big cuts; laying off people without second thought - the older - more expensive people as she puts it. Well, guess what? You made your bed and now you have to lay in it like the rest of us.

Why not discuss the large negative economic incentives of hiring old people? If you are talking about a stereotypes , you cannot dismiss those by cherry picking your example. 1) You will hire someone who has a pretty good chance quitting to retire within a few years. You spend 2 years investing in training an employee, only to lose them in 4 years because retirement benefits kick in. Now this isn't specific to old people. The same can happen with maternity or ambitious employees. But it is just another cutoff point many people take to leave. 2) the older you get the greater the risk of a physical injury will incapacitate them. Even something as menial like a cashier at a supermarket. A fall is much more likely to break a hip which requires a longer time to recover from. And depending on the laws, it can mean that the employer has to pay sick leave for months or years with very little gain. And then we aren't even taking into account medical conditions that accrue with age. 3) More experiences does not mean more flexibility. I have worked in a company (big financial institution) where numerous employees worked from start till retirement for the same company. Throughout the years they had migrated numerous times in the company due to changes in culture, size or technology or personal ambition. But for a large chunk of employees there was a great hurdle when it came to retraining the older they got. Either because they lacked the comfort to embrace new digital systems, or because they were unwilling to change their work pattern because they had gotten accustomed to it. We are talking about 63 year old typing with two fingers, spending 20 minutes finding the right folder in a cloud or unwilling to schedule meetings with clients over Teams. Then there is the additional risk that rather than adapt to a new situation, they are incentivized to hold out in their old role until the company issues them a severance package. A completely rational decisions, if they consider their future prospects poor. They'd better take the bag on their way out. But this usually means a lot of friction with management or their teams, resulting in sick leaves and more lost productivity. If you want to ensure you keep working in old age, I guess you better be your own boss. Historically, old people kept working because there was no social safety net and there was no fixed retirement age. So you just worked until you couldn't. And because there was economic insecurity they lived in with family were they could assist by providing supplemental income or care task rather than be economically self sufficient. But all that changed with pension systems, nursing services, smaller families and a cohort of people who didn't have children. It seems unfair to compare a live-in grandma making meals for the family with a childless spinster who has been working as secretary for decades.

@esreagan
@esreagan 13 дней назад
A large part of something missing here is that older folks byinlarge have deeply held religious/social hang ups. What good is an aged worker's idea, as wise as it may be, if they start foaming at the mouth because someone else has a man bun or is trans or, heaven forbid, another race than they are?
@jimdavis6833
@jimdavis6833 13 дней назад
I'm white, 84, have a full beard, and hair halfway down my back and have never judged anyone based on race, or beliefs. Stop judging others based on what social media, and the MSM, tells you. Those you describe only represent a very small fraction of elderly people, or any other age. Get out of your bubble and go meet some old people. It's apparent that you don't know many.
@CalicoCooperFan
@CalicoCooperFan 13 дней назад
What good does it do to have a young, diverse work force if they discriminate on the basis of age and stereotype others?
