The Kansas City Chiefs defense and their defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo trapped Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers offense in a nightmare throughout Super Bowl 58, that they could not, and did not escape. How did the Chiefs do it? And what was so wrong with what Shanahan did? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze the San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan’s struggles in Super Bowl 58.

Great work as usual, AR! My conspiracy theory is that Shannanhan knew Aiyuk had 1 foot out of the door vs Deebo. Who they locked up long term and chose to over feature Deebo. It's no wonder that soon after the loss wispers came out that Aiyuk wants out. And I totally agree about Jones. He was the MVP.

If you're an offensive coach, he's honestly the perfect right-hand man. He's both old and has sucked in an HC position before, so there's little to no concern of anyone wanting to poach him, so you can count on him being there for a long time, shoring up the defense, mentoring, developing, etc.

@@2kolbe010yeah it really was a comedy of errors. Anyone who follows the 49ers knows that Deebo is their run after the catch guy and Aiyuk is their pure receiver. And yet when the Chiefs were playing man coverage, Kyle decided to target Deebo way more than Aiyuk. Aiyuk should have been the one targeted in the passing game and they should have gotten Deebo the ball in space whether through runs or screens. And of course there’s the decision to receive the ball to start overtime which is just baffling.

I don't believe Kittle was open at any point during the game. But what difference does it make if their o-line can't give Purdy enough time to throw the ball? And with CMC averaging only a little over 3 yards per carry I'm not sure it would've made a difference feeding him a heavy dose of the ball.

Eth is a scam. Trade for a sol meme coin. Then trade that for Luna. Thank God the refs were on our side. Every pass I was so scared they were gonna call holds on our o line. Reid knows how to grease the right hands. We would have got beat down like when we played Brady if the refs hadn't been looking out for us hard. Go chiefs . Can we make it 4 sb without our o line holding a single time? I believe we can. Esp if kelce keeps doing Pfizer ads and dating t swift. The holds on bosa were so obvious but if they don't call it , were the dynasty. Go chiefs. Imagine losing 38-3 just cause the refs wanted to ruin our back to back superbowls. I would have been so mad. I mean, mad wouldn't even describe it. Let's just say , if the refs be for us, who can be against us? Now that Brady is out of the league, The refs have no reason not to help us win.

Hell of a game from Chris Jones. Patience is running out from the fan base. (49ers) Look Kyle has turned this team around no question. But I really do believe he takes the offensive genius title to heart. It’s about the little details that wins you games. He trusts his original game plan too much, and usually it has his team winning but when they’re losing they usually never come back. Basically what I’m saying is that Kyle is not good at improvising.

I'll try this with you. If you're having a *really bad day* you'll want to call _old_ friends, watch _familiar_ TV shows or an old movie, listen to music from better times. The subconscious (SC) regards _familiar things_ as comforting. What does an NFL coach who can't escape immediate stress do? Calls _familiar_ plays as if they were more effective than winning ones. They're not aware they're doing it. This is where Andy Reid rules. He looks ahead & plans for as many scenarios as he can handle. When you do _that,_ the SC shifts them from unfamiliar to familiar & they become part of where your SC goes to seek comfort, _OR_ he's one of those rare people who doesn't emotionally freeze in these situations. It's one or the other. So, while Shanahan seeks to not overload his mind with Every Possibility, which _is_ the right course btw, you can freeze from information overload too, he always thinks he's gonna know what to do when the time comes No Matter What the situation. But when we're stressed, the SC takes over. If you _try_ to go against it, it becomes like a nagging 4-year-old who wants you to return to The Familiar. If this is what's happening, he will not be aware it's happening & won't be able to fight it. Look at Mike McCarthy: he's been doing this *for **_decades_* that we know of. Or the article about Sean "lost a game in 13 seconds due to my play-calling" McDermott indicated he's an even more extreme version of this. Both have to shut out the voices of anyone else because they can't juggle them _AND_ their own internal one pushing them towards calling Familiar Plays Only. With McDermott, he seizes up SO much he actually thinks everyone else is out to get him & can't leave the play-calling in their hands. I was _hoping_ Alex would do a video like this.

@@jcm7814 Thanks. It's actually very common. In real life, people feel better when they return to Feeling Comfortable With changes rather than making them. Like how anti-GMO protests lose support. Why? Did people get rid of 'em? Nope. Over time our subconscious (SC) just wants to stop feeling uncomfortable. So it mistakes getting there by no longer rejecting them as Accomplishing The Goal. Only acceptance allows us to feel calm. So this applies to WAY MORE than sports.

@@travisov Someone else said something that may be a factor: Kyle is a prodigy. His dad had a lot of difficulty getting on with team *owners* & may have taught Kyle to keep things to himself. Or it could be the stuff I said, or both. When people feel stressed, loneliness feels like it's a part of it since we always feel alone in our troubled times. This is one of those feelings that magnifies itself. So it can spiral. The stress of the game causes one to *want* to magnify that feeling. Ahh, psychology. It isn't a Fun Topic by any means, but _I_ like it for some strange reason.

Wilks was not fired because of the Super Bowl, he was fired because of the defenses huge drop in performance from 2022. The went from #2 against the run in 22 under Demeco Ryans to #26 in 23 under Wilks. The defense went from #1 in total defense in 2022 to #12 in 2023. That was after an offseason where they added Javon Hargrave in free agency and Chase Young midseason, while also still having Bosa, Warner, Greenlaw, Mooney Ward etc. That kind of a drop in performance with all that talent will get you fired.

Winning in this league is so hard. It's literally a fickle game of inches. As a lifelong Chiefs fan it feels surreal that we've won 3 in last 5 years. The sky is not falling for the 49ers, and there isn't some massive gap between KC and the rest of the contenders. The Chiefs were one play away in each SB from being 3 time SB losers. Not taking credit away from my Chiefs because it takes an insane mix of health, game planning, coaching, execution, adjustments, a bit of luck, and guys making one more play in a crucial spot to win the down. We've been on the opposite side of these where Mahomes throws a wide open 3rd/Goal TD to Tyreek from the 2 yard line right in the dirt vs the Bengals in that AFCCG before halftime (then get stopped with no points on 4th down)... Or Dee Ford's offsides vs Brady at the end of that AFCCG. Just watching all the game tape breakdowns shows how razor thin the margins are between winning and losing in this league when two great teams are on the field.

I mean match ups are a thing as well. Folks ate up Brock's numbers vs the blitz in the regular season probably felt bamboozled he wasn't doing as hot after Spags adjusted in the 2nd half. That was all while Spags had his defense selling out against the run. Kyle doing more guard pulling for the O-line did no favors since the Chiefs have no problems getting rushes from their interior guys. Also doesn't help the Niners like to play condensed sets against one of the best blitzing teams who utilizes DBs. And as bad as Reid's game plan was, Mahomes adjusted well in the 2nd half to the Niners zone coverage play. Sure the Niners could have found a way to beat out these situations in key situations but that was the story for me.

Both of yall are trippin.. is he overpaid? Sure. But deadweight or a decoy? That's over- exaggeration Deebo is 1 of 1 in this league. But Kyle has emptied the entire bag of playcalls. Also, Deebo always makes huge plays when the team needs it.

I find the Deebo comment incredibly short sighted especially coming from a Niners fan like yourself. Like Yes Deebo has been overpaid but to imply he's just an expensive Cheerleader and Decoy is just wild to me. The guy has some of the best abilities of picking up yards after catch not even close to anyone else in the league. He's incredibly tough, great at breaking tackles, and has fantastic long speed. His role in Shanahans offense is what makes him so dang special as a player. Just because he disappeared in the playoffs would all of sudden mean he wouldn't have a future

Shanahan's system is unparalleled and his play design is elite. His situational play calling and in game adjustments, however? Both can be shockingly mediocre. He's far too rigid in his systems and stubborn in his game plans. This is where Andy Reid and Steve Spagnuolo schooled him. Both coaches made dramatic adjustments as the game went on and as a result, right when the 49ers started to buckle, the Chiefs punched through.

Do other teams employ one HC for these moments & another for all the others? Look at Mike McCarthy. Find a summary of the McDermott article (Bills HC): both are _WAY_ worse than Shanahan. Shanahan is *slow* to change in games. McCarthy & McDermott both regress to calling *familiar plays* instead of effective ones & the more they fail, the more they call them one down after another. When you're really stressed you need The Familiar: watch an old movie, eat comfort food, listen to music from better times. This isn't a Conscious Reaction. All reactions are emotional. The emotional response is to Seek The Familiar. Unfortunately, playoff games are not the time to succumb to this desire. But since they're not consciously aware their own minds are forcing them to do this, they get _more_ anxious when they try to fight it. McCarthy & McDermott are more extreme than Shanahan (wait, are these guys _ALL_ Irish)? Matt Lafleur is even slower than Shanahan to adjust in games. Look at what the Ravens didn't do. Most people can't keep their thoughts clear when stressed. Reid either does one of two things: he tries to think of every scenario in advance so his brain includes those in his subconscious so they become familiar, or he's one of those rare people who doesn't seize up like most of us in the clutch & can think clearly.

@t4d0W
@t4d0W 2 месяца назад
Its less about whoever didn't do "X" wouldn't win but if the coaches can adjust fast enough to make it matter before the end of the game. Plus Spags did go about his own risky way of selling out to defend the Niners run which worked. He then masterfully adjusted by playing the deep throws in the 2nd half and playing more man coverage. Shanahan needed to show more of his hand beyond finding Aiyuk deep in those possessions because Spags' defense has been successful all night. Along with the Mahomes insurance on a final possession.

Ehhh..."embarrassed" is a strong description after losing in OT to Patrick Mahomes, but yes it was a rough game for us fans. Hopefully the 49ers make fixing the OL in the offseason a priority. Kyle needs to start targeting guys that can pass block, and not get so dialed in on run blockers in my opinion. Those problems really nuked the 49ers as time went on, especially the right side in pass pro. Feliciano, Buford, and McKivitz just aren't the answer at RG/RT. Anyway, thanks for sharing your insight on what happened. Even if the loss was a gut-punch, it's important to see the pitfalls that can occur when a team's offensive line pass pro is bad.

Old guy here. Rooting for the Chiefs, but figured it had to fall a certain way for them to win. No turnovers, stop CMC from running and pass catching all over them, force Purdy to panic and throw multiple INTs or get sacked. Of course, Chiefs defense have to play brilliantly like they did most of the season, offense get in the lead to force SF to abandon the run, then confuse Purdy even more, and hopefully, catch a break. Didn’t really count on KS being sort of a bonehead on a couple of occasions though. I didn’t realize Deebo was that bad in man coverage, but KS kept going to him, 3/11 is not going to cut it. The thing I don’t understand was why at 2:00 minute mark in the 4th quarter with the niners at the KC 35 yardline on a 3rd and 4 or 5, WHY did KS call for a pass instead of a run? A run might or might not have gotten the 1st down, but it would have taken time off the clock, or better yet forced the Chiefs to use a timeout. Then they still could have kicked the FG or better yet gone for it and iced the game like the Chiefs did last year. Worst case scenario, they don’t get the 1st down, but take off 70 seconds off the clock, and Chiefs have no timeouts. Or even, line up to go for it on 4th down, let the clock wind down while they try to draw them offside, then call their own TO to set up their FG. Either way, you take time off the clock. If you don’t make it, KC would have to drive about 50 yards to get into FG range with zero timeouts to set up the winning FG. You’re going to OT anyway may as well take as much time off the clock. SF just left too much time for MaHomes, along with 2 timeouts to either tie or win the game. KC took a shot at the end zone and dame near won the game in regulation. Then taking the ball first in OT. I don’t really have a problem with that, except your offense had damn well better score a TD, because kicking the FG is just plain stupid. Anyway it made for an exciting game, one that the niners lost. Go three peat Chiefs!

@t4d0W 2 месяца назад
You went about it a long way but Shanahan has shown that despite his talent in play calling for the offense, his HC skills for clock management and taking 'better' risks deep in the 4th within 2-3 minutes of time left are not great. Even as talent ladened as his offense was, he was still seeing the game situation in a myopic way and was willing to die on that hill.

They most certainly didn’t embarrass Kyle. That was a great, close game between two top teams

I remember folks saying the 49's were the better team the first time the Chiefs beat them in a Super bowl. I guess some things never change.

Yes he does , but how do u fire a guy who made the SB?😊

@@marcojimenez5555 trade him for a Joe Staley type right tackle and two shut down CBs. Hire Belichick. Fans will cry for exactly 5 min. Sooner they do it the better. Maybe Brady will even play for one year to get #8. Then it's back to Purdy

49ers: lose star linebacker, lose star guard, horrible 4th quarter defensive playcalling alex: how the chiefs ABSOLUTELY EMBARRASSED the 49ers AWFUL and UNPREPARED team (even though they were 100x more prepared seemingly in the first half and completely dominated before losing key players to injury) -_- not a 49ers fan, just loved watching these videos but the past few months it seems like you don't even watch half the games you talk about

My biggest takeaway from this video was that Spags outcoached Shanahan. To make it worse, Shanahan's adjustments were of no effect because Spags had a counter. Niners glaring weakness is the O-Line and has been for several years now. These weaknesses need to be addressed in the off-season without a doubt.

Our spirit is broken, and KYLE has a vote of No confidence. It was All or nothing and we lost. Too many players are going to leave. It will take us years to recover from this. Bad MOJO for being so arrogant. Too many players obsessed with marketing and dooms us. Bosa is an idiot, Kittle is trying to be Zoolander and Deebo and Trent need to lose the boombox. KYLE is NOT a leader of Men and crumbles in the heats of battle. Cowardly and embarassing and not the 49ER legacy.

Did you know? Kyle Shanahan is the only coach in the NFL that DOESN'T employ an offensive coordinator?
@innocentfba

He had Mcdaniel as his OC the year before he went to the dolphins, I don't think he doesn't want one, they just need to be good maybe, just guessing

@@innocentfba but they didn't replace McDaniels. When Bienemy left KC, they replaced him. Bobby Slowik was WIDELY known as an up and coming talent...and look at what he did with CJ Stroud! SF lost Slowik because they don't have an OC position. The ego of Kyle Shanahan is wrecking this team on many levels
@innocentfba

Yeah, that's fair, your comment made it seem like you meant he never has and never will, but under the right circumstances, it seems like he would. Either way, if they don't address that o-line soon we’ll be back here again!

So the Niners lose on the last play of overtime in the Superbowl and your takeaway is shaman was embarrassed? This same chiefs defense who I guess have been embarrassing teams all season including the MVP of the season in Lamar Jackson holding him to 10 points. This same Ravens team who was heralded as the best team in the NFL this year. It took a fluky bounce on a punt return, a fluky injury to one of the best linebackers in the game and other key injuries to the defense late in the game for the Chiefs to grind this game out. The chiefs had not driven the length of the field for a touchdown all game until the game winning drive in overtime. If anyone of the fluky plays had not happened the narrative would be how the Niners held mahomes and the chiefs in check and how shanahan embarrassed Andy Reid. Kelce was a total non factor until Greenlaws injury. Not to mention the online breakdown late in the game. Oh, did I mention 7 fumbles in the game 5 by the chiefs and the chiefs recovered 6? Some days the ball just doesn't bounce your way. Any one of these factors could easily have changed the game. All that being said, sometimes you just got to give it up to the Chiefs and mahomes being mahomes. This was a great game with 2 heavyweights going toe to toe.

Agreed. The game went into overtime, so it was basically a jump ball. But it's not like the Falcons blowing a 25 point lead to the Patriots. The Chiefs and the 49ers were pretty evenly matched throughout.

Yes he got embarrassed because the Niners are supposed to beat the living shit out of the Chiefs. This is the weakest Chiefs team in recent times & yet the potent Niners team can’t beat them? Give me a break

Justin Reid was coming too, even if Jones was blocked Reid was behind him. Someone was getting to Purdy.
