The Dallas Cowboys won three Super Bowls in four years. It was a success that defined Jerry Jones, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and many others. But it also spelled and magnified their collapse.
If you want to know more about the beef between Troy Aikman and Barry Switzer which added to these turbulent times, check out our episode of Beef History here: • Troy Aikman and Barry ...

OMNISAIYANGOD9000 OMNISAIYANGOD9000 “what you’ve heard” is called conjecture. It’s not based on any kind of fact; unlike what I have given you. You can draw a clear delineation from an event that occurred (the salary cap enforcement) and can clearly see the way that it impacted the roster and personnel moving forward. It’s not open for debate whether the Cowboys were spending more than other teams. It’s a fact. Their win vs the Bills being the most egregious example where their roster salary outspent the Bills by a factor of 4 to 1. It’s also not debatable if that talent left and took more lucrative signing deals with other teams as soon as the Cowboys were no longer able to pay them. You can watch the video for examples of this happening in the following years of the salary cap. It’s also not debatable if the NFL fined and removed draft picks form the Cowboys, Broncos, and Raiders for cheating the new salary cap rules. That is recorded history. When there is no violation of the rules; you also see a significant change in record and playoff appearances that directly correlates with these events.
@chungus5881

@renshawjoshua
@renshawjoshua 4 года назад
OMNISAIYANGOD9000 OMNISAIYANGOD9000 You also don’t have to wonder if Jimmy Johnson “would have been THAT good of a coach” because you also have examples you can reference. The Cowboys was not Jimmy Johnson’s final job coaching in the NFL. He went on to coach the Dolphins as well and took that team from 8-8 to 9-7 to 10-6 and a couple post season appearances and even a couple wins. Yes coaching is important and can make a difference; but it doesn’t turn an average to below-average team into a dynasty like has been suggested. Maybe with Jimmy the Cowboys decline is slightly less precipitated; but still a noticeable decline nonetheless that ends with little success. Which is what I am pointing out. As soon as the Cowboys could no longer straight-up buy all of the most talented free agents on defense and continue to pay all of them along with paying 7 to 8 Hall of Fame offensive players simultaneously; the Cowboys never won again. Not just a blip or bad season; we are talking about falling off a cliff and being a mostly irrelevant team for 25 years. Occasionally making a playoff but never really being a legit contender. Compare that to organizations in the modern day like Pittsburgh or the Patriots. Both have been in decline the last few seasons due to an aging roster and losing skill players. But neither one has fallen off a cliff and became completely irrelevant like the Cowboys did when they were no longer allowed to purchase Super Bowl rings. They went from Super Bowl winners to Conference Championship teams and then making the playoffs but maybe not getting far... it is a gradual drop. A quality front office doesn’t go from 13-3 to 4-12 in the span of two years. The Cowboys front office does.

I supported the Cowboys all my life. Some of my earliest memories are watching the Cowboys with my father from the mid 60s on. When Jerry's ego came between what was best for the team and having to acknowledge that Jimmy Johnson was the reason for their successful comeback and dynasty in the 90s, that was it for me. Something you completely left out of your video that was a huge deal leading to the Cowboys collapse: The NFL salary cap beginning in 1994. Cowboys fans don’t want to accept it; but the majority of the reason they won in the late 1980s and early 1990s was because they bought those Super Bowls. The joke back then was that the NFC championships between Dallas and San Francisco was the “real super bowl” simply because they spent so much money on their teams in comparison to any potential AFC competitors. The “Dallas Wall” had 3 Hall of Fame Players and 1 additional Pro Bowler. How did they make that happen? There were 6 offensive linemen making over $1 million / year prior to the salary cap. 1 played for San Francisco. 1 played for Washington. The other 4 all played for the Cowboys. When Dallas played Buffalo in the Super Bowls; both times Dallas outspent Buffalo in team salary 4:1. It wasn’t just the Cowboys but the NFC in general that drastically outspent the AFC. Prior to the salary cap; the NFC had won the Super Bowl 9 consecutive times by over more than double-digits average. You can see the effects of the salary cap on Dallas immediately once Jerry Jones could no longer just buy all the best players in free agency and afford to keep all of the draft pick signings from the Hershel Walker deal so that they didn’t leave (which is why their first two Super Bowl wins they were the youngest team on average in the NFL both years). The only reason they got one more win in 1995 was they took enormous cap hits while also back-loading player contracts to make it work. They were also fined by the NFL for basically cheating the system. It’s the reason Aikman had a 7 year - $70 million extension that they never intended on paying him and subsequently they had to pay him the guaranteed money later; so he would play for less at the time and get them under the salary cap. That is the main reason for all the players leaving in FA; when the Cowboys could no longer pay everybody and they could get more money from other teams. It’s also the reason that since 1995 Dallas has 0 Super Bowl wins, 0 Super Bowl appearances, 0 NFC championship appearances, and only 2 playoff wins total in the last 24 years. When they can’t outspend other teams and it’s fair? Jerry Jones can’t compete with other front offices in terms of quality. It’s born out in the numbers.

I will give Jerry credit for all 3 of those Super Bowl wins in the 90s. He came into the Cowboys and they had guys like Schramm and Landry running the team who were great in their time but they no longer had the pulse of what it took to be great anymore. Jerry shook things up and did what was best for the team at the time. But the Cowboys for the last decade have for the most part been a team just missing out of the playoffs. The Cowboys needs this generations version of what Jerry was in 1989 to come in and shake things up and get them out of their rut.

OMNISAIYANGOD9000 OMNISAIYANGOD9000 Answer: No. In the NFL there is gigantic variance from week to week. Pitting good teams vs good teams they each have a reasonable chance of winning week in and week out. There is a reason that 10-6 teams have went on to win Super Bowls and 15-1 teams lose their first playoff game. There really isn’t much difference between a 13-3 team and 14-2 or 11-5 except the ball bounced one way or the other in a couple of those games. That isn’t a good barometer for “domination”. Rather you should be looking at strength of schedule and margin of victory. The 13-3 Cowboys teams you are talking about weren’t out there blowing people out and dominating the game and just barely lost 3 coin-flip games against good teams. There is a reason neither of these teams are mentioned within the same breath of other “dominant” all-time great teams. Many of those teams also not necessarily winning Super Bowl; but certainly not being humiliated each and every season when it’s playoff time like the Cowboys always are.

The list of players Dallas lost through free agency during that era could build an entire roster for another team with a couple of notable exceptions (QB and RB come to mind). Norton and Maryland both hurt but so did loosing Alvin Harper, Larry Brown and even Kelvin Martin. @Harry Engel I liked the Chase format. It made the last 10 to 12 race is more exciting because it wasn't already obvious who was pulling away in the standings. But it's so rewarded the most consistently good driver. Now the format is that there is a round by round playoff elimination so in theory a driver could win every single race the entire year and if they don't finish ahead of the remaining drivers in the very last race of the season they wouldnt win the cup. Which is stupid because the whole point is to reward the most consistent team and Driver throughout the whole year in my opinion. The other thing for me is that drivers have changed their number and sponsor so much more often. And for me that negatively impacts it. it's like the equivalent of a sports team changing their uniform and Logo every couple of seasons. Lame

It's really difficult to follow up one successful period with another. The Dallas Cowboys aren't the only ones. Look at the San Francisco 49ers. They haven't won it all since 1994 which was their fifth in a 14-year span between 1981 and 1994 despite making SBs 47 and 54.

Packers after the Ice Bowl would be much more reasonable. The question I have asked myself after watching just two of these videos is would that be too ancient, and I ask this as a person who loves to study sport from the really distant past. Then, if Packers after the Ice Bowl is OK, then why not the Yankees after their 1949 to 1964 dynasty - 1965 was the Yankees’ worst season for over four decades??

Jerry sold his soul for that last Superbowl against the Steelers.. He's said he'll never ask for another Superbowl as long as he lives as long as the Dallas Cowboys beat the Steelers.. The Dallas Cowboys will NEVER WIN AGAIN as long as he's alive. it's never gonna happen.. 😤

As an eagles fan, to hear this beautiful story from a cockroach cowboys fan is a glorious symphony. But you're greatly undervaluing the importance of Jimmy Johnson, and how all 3 of those superbowls are non existant without him. Aikman himself has said the 3rd SB win was thanks to enough of JJs culture and roster talent remaining and running on fumes. The big picture is that Jerry Jones made only 1 great decision during his entire reign as owner, and that was hiring jimmy johnson.

The only credit Jerry Jones deserves is for buying the team, putting Johnson in as couch, and signing checks. Switzer contributed to losing the 94 championship game alright...in big ways. The season was actually lost the minute Erik Williams wrecked his car thanks to Switzer's wuss coaching approach that put zero fear into the players for their behavior. It was clear the Cowboys had no edge anymore when San Fran beat them in the regular season, and as bad as it was there.... Switzer had them totally unready in the championship game and it was 21 points for SF before anyone knew it. Fast forward to present day...the only constant for the cowboys is failing in the critical moment, usually beating themselves....and as long as the Cowboys are in the spotlight, that's just fine with Jerrah. He doesn't truly care about winning, else he would have fired himself a long, long time ago.

Expectations haven't changed for the Boys since '93. As a Redskins fan, knowing my team is garbage and there's never expectations, it's basically a playoff win equivalent whenever the Cowboys collapse. Season in and out, it never fails, there's Super bowl talk and it never fails, they blow it in the most satisfying way. Always.

Another great episode done by SB Nation! Could you do one on my favorite MLB team the Oakland A's? You could do it from the early 70's A's teams who won 3 consecutive world series or even the mid to late 80's A's teams who went to 3 straight world series! Thanks in Advance!

The beef between Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson deserves its own video. Lots of twists and turns with that that well predates their time together on the Cowboys, depending on whose version of the story you believe.
