When meeting or saying goodbye to friends or relatives, a warm greeting is given. Shake hands, hug or three kisses. In the case of strangers, it is cold and simple. So no 'nice to meet you' or 'how are you'. If you don't mean it, you don't have to say it.

There are also many regional differences in the Netherlands. I come from the South of the Netherlands (Noord-Brabant) where the people are the most ‘gezellig’ (meaning: friendly, open, kind to strangers, laidback , easy to converse with, and a bit noisy 😜). In the North, they are more introverted and less sociable/approachable to strangers. In the West (‘de Randstad = the area including all the big cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Leiden etc) people are more rude and direct, individualistic, it’s easier to get into a fight by accident etc. If I accidentally bump into a stranger in a bar here in the South, I say “sorry” and (possibly) have a nice conversation with that person. No problem at all. If I would do this somewhere in ‘De Randstad’ (the West), I would get scolded and possibly get into a fight. But still, everyone is different so these are just ‘generalizations’ 🙏😊

17:23 this guy is speaking facts, i feel like what has changed is that LGBTIQ+ is more recognized and accepted compared to 5 years ago for example so the anti LGBTIQ+ people are way more exposed than before which shows that not everyone is as open minded as we might have thought
@MrExezz
@MrExezz 2 года назад
@Jim Games, 18:00 "I wonder what has changed..." Problem with being tolerant is that it can quickly escalade into being TO tolerant, to the point where your own values and morals are being every so slightly changed and adjusted by other people or groups who you are tolerant towards but are not tolerant themselves. Resulting in being so tolerant that you forgo everything that makes you, you. All in the name of being tolerant. In my oppinion it goes back to the very highly regarded value/moral of the Dutch people in general "Live and let live" If we as Dutch ppl are so tolerent to say and think "we tolerate and accept other ppl/groups and norms that come allong with them" when those same ppl are not of the same mind set of being tolerant but instaid only take, take, and take.. and change those core values and morals ever so slightly to fit their wants and needs to the point where not much values and morals of the Dutch are being respected. I personaly feel like at what point is being tolerant towards anything enough? Only giving into others being helpfull when the ppl who take advantage of that tolerance are not giving that same tolerance back? Its like giving a finger to a child, and when you do give that finger the quickly want another finger, than you whole hand, eventually your whole arm. Enough is enough. Another example, when you come late for work, 1st time 5 mins, Employer says nothing, 2nd time again 5 mins, Employer says nothing, than you show up late 15 mins, Employer says nothing because he's "Tolerant" and values you as a employee, can happen that you are late. til a point where you come late every day and show up, if you even show up, when you feel like it.. and if your Employer than says anything, you are like.."Huh" it has never been a problem why is it a problem now? and its close to impossible to correct or set traight. not even mentioning that other colligues have seen you come late and not being told anything in the name of being tolerant so the to show up late, and when the ged told by the Employer to not do that, answer wil be "Yeah but he come's late to every day, why is he allowed to come late and I am not..?" Just a massive shit show is what you get. (Just like the massive text that I just typed)

I think the judgmental and rude part might be linked to us being blunt. And we do dislike people bragging and being super competitive. We're all just people. No need to pretend you are better than the next person. I think people are happier that way. Less pressure to be someone you're not.

When the first girl said "sloppy", what I think she meant to say was blunt and direct. Of course when we meet our friends we hug each other and we ask them how they've been. But the difference is, If we ask that question we genuinely want to know. When meeting strangers for the first time, or even people you know for longer but the type of relation is more "formal" you just shake hands and say your name as an introduction.

When it comes to learning languages most kids start these days in elementary school at the age of 10 11 with English (England English is what we get in school). At the of 11 12 when kids start going to high school all kids will get English and of course Dutch which you get from an early age. And what extra languages you get if you get one depends on which level you do in high school. This is because we have 3 different levels and 1 practical level. In those 3 levels, you get most of the times German on the lowest level. The level after that French and German (German does not start until your second year). And the highest level also French and German, but at the highest level you also have to take an exam in one of the two languages in you finals. And depending on the school you go to, you can also follow or have Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Russian or Frisian. There is also a possibility to follow Greek or Latin at the highest level.

The Dutch are definitely more open minded than most countries, but we're far from perfect and especially in recent years there's been a lot of fear, spurred on my populistic politicians like Geert Wilders. The Dutch have had major immigration streams out of countries like Morocco and Suriname for decades, and over the years large communities of these nationalities have congregated in their own little pocket societies for a myriad of reasons. There's a large movement of people who actively oppose Moroccans, Islamic people, middle-easterners, etc, perpetuating a cycle of hatred in which some communities feel scorned by the country they live in and thus act out in retribution, and also perpetuating a cycle of poverty, which leads to more crime and hatred. There's a lot of racism there that won't go away anytime soon, I fear. With the recent immigration crisis out of Afghanistan, Afghanistans are the most recent target of this xenophobia. I'm blessed to have many Surinamers in my family, and having grown up nearby IJmuiden which houses a lot of minorities, I grew up with a few friends of different ethnicities. I quickly understood that their homes were very Different to mine, despite being only 20 minutes away by bike, in part because of the racism of the town I myself lived in. There's also a large group of people who are very uncomfortable about LGBT+ rights for some reason - I will never understand, despite all my best attempts. People had few issues accepting gays and bisexuals, but once transgender people came into the mix the tone shifted a little. Probably because people have concerns about medicine entering the picture. Homo- and bisexuality was still acceptable enough within the "Doe Maar Normaal" principle, but transgenders pushed the boundaries too far it seems, and the Dutchies are freaking out a bit.

My wife and I went to pick up my Greek in-laws from the airport. Next to us stood a other Dutch man, waiting for his wife and kids to arrive. My wife saw her mother, and screamed,jumped, you know...as Greeks do. When that man's family arrived, he gave his wife a double pat on her shoulders, and a dry kiss. He asked his son how it went, that's it. Contrasting scene.

I think we are more and more judgmental lately because we don't only look outwards but inwards as well, and we judge others as much as we do ourselves! And to be honest it's not always a great look when you see yourself in regards to social situations such as racism, rich and or poor etc etc. But I am happy we do have the sence to reevaluate and learn, adapt and overcome our problems and that makes me a proud dutchie ;)

The Dutch call themselves tolerant, but tbh I just think it's opportunism. We were fairly accepting of Sephardic Jews coming to the Netherlands, they were richer than the ashkenazi jews, thus being stricter when it came to Ashkenazi jews fleeing execution... I think we were once very tolerant when it came to lgbt issues, but that kind of stagnated after we legalized same sex marriage in 2001 Also we've had a few very racist and islamophobic politicians that were kind of popular, one of them murdered (he's seen as a national hero in a way, which I think is very weird). The three (extreme) right winged parties have 19% of the seats in government right now. So the tolerance has definitely shifted

I was watching a reaction to the video "Canadian Veteran Celebrated in The Netherlands" directly after this. We Dutch still celebrate the liberation of WWII every year. My grand parents always remembered what happened in the war and how little they had back then. So because of the war people learned to live without luxury. There is a Dutch expression: "ieder dubbeltje drie keer omdraaien" - "turn every coin three times (before spending it)". It is good to not spend all your money but try so save a little. But I think that is changing because nowadays most people want a new mobile phone or a new car. Also a lot of people no longer know the value of money because they pay with plastic cards and have no clue how much they are spending. Another thing, we like to talk about prices "this is sooo expensive" or "I got this on sale on it was so cheap". We also love (fake) discounts so maybe that is why we could be seen as stingy. But people are still spending a lot on luxury (especially when it is on sale) and going out to restaurants or festivals if they can affort it. So as a stingy Dutch person I don't agree with the statement that we don't spend a lot of money 😉

"Lomp" can be best translated as "clumsy" but being more or less "rude" in the process. Not really an accurate description of being Dutch, but that is what she said. In a conversation they won't say "I don't like you". It's more like, "I disagree with almost everything that you just said, but I'll by you a beer because I like you". Being open is considered a virtue, sugarcoating is for cakes, not for what you have to say. Dutch women are independent so flirting in a south-european style can be taken as "creepy" and women know you're talking bullocks, not a good strategy. That would explain the woman's rant.

Dutch tolerance has been a tradition since the 1500's, when the freedom of religion was codified and the Dutch have always been far ahead on race relations compared to their European counterparts, not to mention the rather backward USA. But lately a lot of people get the feeling that tolerance is been taken advantage off and not just by the 'usual suspects', while mass immigration to an already overcrowded and in everyway overstretched country is continuing. So there's a bit of a backlash, not entirely unreasonable imo.
@littlemissmello

No, racists are being racists, it wasn't like these racists were all super tolerant before. And as Dutch people we've really mythologized our own tolerance a bit. Jewish people weren't "welcomed", they were tolerated mostly, Catholics too, we were not "ahead" on race relations just because we didn't have Jim Crowe written into law. I have read court reports from 1908 where a black man is dragged in front of a judge for hitting a white man because the white man had called him "zwarte piet" and we're still arguing about this more than 100 years later! Immigration is not the issue, it's rich people blaming it on them as if they're not the ones getting rid of all of our social systems, making housing impossible to find and afford and making the bridge between rich and poor bigger than it has been since before the industrial revolution.

But there's also a group of people that say the minorities should keep their mouth shut and that they have no right to complain about things that "don't exist". Are you getting a little bit obsessed with the Dutch? ;) Edit: Also, the bluntness is mostly in the northern regions, especially in Noord-Holland (where Amsterdam is located). I'm from that region, but I moved to the south about 10 years ago. I still have a hard time here. People will ask for your opinion, but they don't actually want it. And here in the south they won't ever really tell you their actual opinion. Unless you really drag it out of them. Made me paranoid for a while, cause they also really like to gossip behind people's backs over here. So the bluntness is a very local thing. And I really miss it.

There are dutch tv programs in the US. like the Voice or big brother. The dutch makes more programs than you think. American programs are the programs at MTV and we have American tv series and movies. 😊 I guess the Dutch and Americans are pretty similar. I mean you guys have European ancestors 😉, except the native americans and afro americans

The woman with the child is not Dutch, can hear that she has a different accent. The change in tolerance is the increase of people with a far-right mindset. The third biggest political party in The Netherlands at the moment is one that has a bit of a similar agenda as the proud boys in the USA.

Our declining tolerance probably refers to our attitude towards foreigners and different cultures. We used to be very tolerant towards people of another religion or skin colour; the alt-right movement used to be very small and very much frowned upon. Nowadays there is a lot of Islamophobia and there is a lot of ado about our Zwarte Piet tradition which is considered to be racist by some and not racist at all by others. These tensions reveal that we as a nation are not as open-minded as we thought we were, unfortunately.

The lady with kid isn't Dutch, she has an Eastern European accent. But in her way she is correct. Dutch men do not flatter women, bring them little presents, a compliment every day etc. Probably she likes these things. And yes, we are judgmental, we have an opinion about everything, and do not hesitate to speak out. Tolerance, openness, and acceptance have gone down in the last decade. Immigrants didn't have to become Dutch in the past, they were allowed to keep their own cultures and ways. This has backfired! Now we have large groups who hate gay people, jews, blacks, and are themselves extremely intolerant to Dutch way of living. We thought that they would adapt to Dutch society, and many did, but some turned out to be a hazard. At home they beat up their wives, keep their daughters away from school, force them to marry at fifteen with their cousin, etc. Outside they shout out at girls and women who dress in summer cloths, openly gay, they even seem to smell Jews from a hundred meters away and insult them, catholic priests and nuns are shouted at, and sometimes spit upon, etc. They rarely speak Dutch though they live here for decades, live from social security, and refuse jobs. If there are any for people who do not speak the language. They cannot even read warning signs in factories! It's a relative small group, but extremely annoying, and drag those who have integrated back into their culture. Tensions in society have gone up, and we do not accept discrimination of our own people in our own country any longer.

In the Netherlands the basic rule is that opinions are like butt holes, Everyone has one and they ain't afraid to tell you. If they like you they tell you by some sarcastic comment, but they also tell you very directly when they do not like wat you're doing or saying. Hierarchy is nearly non-existent; you tell your boss off when they are talking bullshit. Over the years Dutch people have grown into a state of mind where they think that they are living in a paradise where the rest of the world is just a shithole that lacks all of the benefits of living in the Netherlands.

It's a shame that most time people talk about the Netherlands they talk about Amsterdam. But that is just a small part of the Netherlands with hit's one culture and Ideas Some witch are not shared in the rest of the Netherlands.Of course some are thrue and shared in the hole country but in the most cases is the Idea that people have of Amsterdam is not the same for the rest of the country so keep looking to other video's that are not over of from Amsterdam to get a better Idea how it is to be Dutch.

My debt is greater than your debt, so I'm better than you ;-) And about the slight change (and nobody dares to say): foreigners. But, only the coloured ones. Not so blunt after all. And asking about The Dutch in Amsterdam is worthless. City people know shit about things outside a city. Why? You don't have to leave a city because everything you need your whole life is there. For instance, city people have no idea what highways lead to what cities and are bad at geography. So yeah, the Dutch are not strict generalizers ;-)

If you're curious about the Dutch Amsterdam is about the worst place to ask people. The lady with the baby clearly has no Dutch origins. Amsterdam is not a good representation of The Netherlands in general, the same as San Francisco does not represent the whole of the USA.

The lady who talks angry about the dutch is not dutch herself... The accent makes me think she is from Poland or Romania. More important..... Amsterdam is not "the Dutch" in general.

Tolerance in the Netherlands is decreasing because leftist politics has been too tolerant to non-compatible cultures allowed to immigrate here. Under the motto "multiculturalism" those immigrants were allowed to behave as if they were still in their country of origin. Many don't speak Dutch, young girls dressed in flimsy dresses often get harassed and called "whore" if they don't respond positively, many gays no longer dare to walk hand-in-hand as violence against them is on the rise even in the city - Amsterdam - that used to be a safe-haven for them, but politicians and media refuse to point to a specific group as that would be "stigmatizing" that group. They rather blame all the men (yes, it is mostly men) for rises in harassment and violence. I, for one, do not appreciate being lectured to about behavior alien to the culture I was brought up in but objecting will be met with accusations of racism. Any wonder many, like myself, are becoming less tolerant?
