For the Better part of 100 years, the Essendon bombers football club, were seen as an AFL juggernaut. A footy club that had a rich history with plenty of highs and lows. Led by their 4-star general; Kevin Sheedy along with his right-hand man James Hird, they would strike fear into the hearts of footy clubs who were unfortunate enough to have them on their fixture for the following weeks game. Tied with Carlton And Collingwood for the greatest number of Premierships won throughout the league’s history, they seemed to be well on their way to surpassing their fierce rivals in securing their 17th flag. But all of a sudden, seemingly overnight. The bombers would slowly dip in form, before their reputation and identity were dragged through the mud, and a group of young players, they would surpass 7000 days without winning a final, and ill-fated coaches were forced to pick up the pieces and try in vain to restore the mighty Essington, to their glory days. How did this happen? Could it have been prevented? Will the bombers ever return to the promised land? I’ll certainly try to answer all those questions and more, as we take a ride down the road to 7000.

@@GondorHornI dunno, they seem pretty good under Scott. The Kangas did that to themselves. They cut a quarter of their list against his advice and told him to push for finals. He said it wasn’t a finals list yet and they parted due to differences of opinion.

People don’t get it. That Essendon squad from 99-01 was insane. Watching them play was like watching the lords of footy show everyone else how it’s done. Matthew Lloyd, to me, seemed like their best player. He was so hard to defend. And it seemed inevitable that a dynasty was coming. And that they would be competitive forever. What happened next still seems so bizarre.

Geelong 07-09 were better. 3 grand finals 2 flags 65-10 record Essendon 1999-2001 2 grand finals 1 flag 63-12 record. Brisbane 2001-2003 3 grand finals 3 flags 54-17-1 record. If Geelong didn't choke in 2008 they would be lauded as the greatest 3 peat team going around.

As a Pies fan I have been in exactly the same situation as the Lions but reversed: the 2002 runner-up finish felt so hard. Especially after watching Bucks and Rocca drag an otherwise average list so close. It kinda made it easier to see Brisbane continue to dominate thereafter - it was a proud moment even if it wasn’t the result I wanted. Still never going to watch 2002 GF ever again, though. 😂

Losing a hard fought grand final doesn’t have to be a fail if the team can bring it next year like the bombers in 84, eagles in 06, and the hawks in 13-15. If the lions bust this year like others recently have, then it will be a big L.

The priority pick rule being changed the season before Essendon would've benefited from it was massive, a true sliding doors moment. Instead of just Gumbleton it could've been Gumblleton and Boak or Selwood. You can go that's old news but the seasons prior Collingwood clearly tanked to be able to pick up Thomas and Pendlebury and without getting Pendlebury you could argue they would be 2 flags worse off right now including the one they won this year. Some clubs just have all the luck, like Collingwood and Brisbane getting two sons in right now but the rule will be changed to be harsher for when Bewick (tearing it up) is ready for Essendon.

I've been an Essendon fan for 64 years now. I moved from Melbourne to Brissy in the early '80s. Because my son was born in Melb, he finally decided to follow AFL. At the time FUCKING COLLINGWOOD were at the top of the ladder and he decided to barrack for the Pies. I would have accepted it better if he came out as gay.....

The club has admitted that it can't survive without income from their 190 poker machines and doesn't give a toss about the damage they are doing to the community, including their own supporters? Essendon's problem is they always finish about halfway. This means they never get any high draft picks. Teams like Hawthorn, WCE and Collingwood have spent a lot more time in the bottom 4 in the last 20 than Essendon.

About the saga I don’t blame any of the players I commend them for reporting the club for what they were doing! I blame the board and who was running the club at the time for the major fk up. That was the saga as should everybody else it wasn’t the players fault! What’s even more infuriating is there was no evidence and the board hid behind the club like cowards I’m glad there gone fk them all that’s why I like Burham he got rid of them I hope he runs EFC for the next decade he’ll bring them glory and fame.

Small detail in the grand scheme of the video, but it's kind of annoying as a North supporter the way 1999 gets talked about like it was only Essendon's prelim blunder that kept them from winning it. No one was taking that one off us. If you want to talk about a missed opportunity driving the next year's performance, there's maybe no better example than North Melbourne in 1999. Absolutely unbelievable side in 1998, clearly the best all season, actually made the grand final... and completely botched it with inaccurate kicking. Only thing I'll say is that it probably would've been a better and more competitive grand final in 1999 if Essendon hadn't fallen at the penultimate hurdle.

I'm 18 turning 19, i remember that 2014 final having no clue of Essendons situation initially, but the commentators mentioned it a few times so i eventually picked up the pieces. I wasn't too upset by the loss, i'm not an Essendon fan, but i remember feeling disappointed and staring at the wall wondering when they would eventually win one.
