German arms manufacturer, Rheinmetall will deliver a new Frankenstein air defense tank to Ukraine.
The Frankenstein air defense tank consists of an advanced German Skyranger anti-aircraft gun mounted on a Leopard 1 battle tank.
Bjorn Bernhard, the head of land systems at Rheinmetall, said in an interview with the German tabloid Bild,
"There are still many Leopard 1 main battle tanks on whose chassis we could mount the Skyranger turret with the 35 mm caliber automatic cannon,"

The threat of drones and missile will drive the development of more systems like this using existing tanks and fitting them with air defense weapons to travel with convoys as well protecting assets

Great affordable for airfields and important installations like power stations, tank farms, grain silos, dams etc munitions , also resilient supply chain also cheaper readily available for delivery

This adds another caliber to an overburdened logistics chain. The Skyranger 35 would also fit on the Leopard I and use the same shells as the Gepard. In fact Ukraine could standardize on the 35 mm for future IFVs as a non Soviet upgrade.

Agree; however, looking at wiki page there are valid reasons / advantages to go with the newer gun. Figure all the Gepards will drop out of the Ukrainian anti air inventory as they are no longer in production and hard to maintain versus the all new turret. PS - recall Germany had to put 35 mm back into production as Switzerland refused to provide ammunition from their stocks

Rhinemetall offer a 35mm and 30mm version of the Skyranger anti micro-drone system. The 30mm offers a much smaller turret with more room for the specialised anti drone radar. It can thus more easily be integrated into smaller vehicles. The 30mm gun is lightweight as it was developed for the Saab Viggen.

The company is planning to install them on Leopard I tank bodies just like the 2 gun Gepard turret that is also on Leopard I bodies. Ukraine has ordered 35 mm CV90 IFVS. I would imagine that a 35 mm ammunition plant would be considered for Ukraine or Poland.

@@bradleyanderson4315 the 30 mm turret also has room for two MANPADS. The British Martlet is excellent at anti drone and doubles the range of the 30mm gun and RBS70 nearly trebbles
