I love God Of War, and I love working out. Put them together and you've got...the way I work out basically all of the time, using 2-3 workouts each week to stay functionally jacked in less than 45 minutes per training session.
If you'd like more detail on any aspect of the workout plan outlined here, hit me up in the comments and I'll do my best to answer. If you'd like a short read that'll get you up to speed on (almost!) everything you need to know about sets, reps, training techniques and little-known movements, please consider grabbing The Dictionary Of Muscle (by me): www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074VC6VF...

@@JoelSnape1 Yeah. Atreus, Kratos' son, asked him when he will get big muscles. Kratos replies "When you work for them". And then Atreus replies "But Baldur didn't have any muscles. And he was really strong." Baldur was a boss you had to fight at the start of the game. Very skinny fella. But he was able to match Kratos one on one. But I'm getting of topic here. Kratos then tells Atreus "My strength does not come from my body. But both are honed by disciplin." Atreus then asks what that means, and then Mimir says what I wrote above.

3 years ago i got so demotivated because of daily 8-hour work and im not as young and motivated for the gym like i used to. So i read up on alternatives i could do to make training fun again. It was things like this. How our anchestors trained. It's alot more fun than your normal workout routine.

Cool video with some really complete information - the only minor nitpick for me is as a thai boxing coach, pushing exercises won't build punching power, because the force of your punch actually comes from the opposite side shoulder and hip PULLING backwards. So if you also want to have a solid punch along with your strength movements you can: Set up a band that will give you medium resistance, stand in your fighting stance, take the band in your rear hand, and then pull it, while turning your upperbody and hip into a left hook. Then when you're done with what ever set you choose, swap into the opposite stance, and do it all again. This way you're training your hip, obliques and lats to physically PULL you into the punch! As a side note, don't try to pivot on the hook (with the band or in general) as you want to create the amount of torque that the foot pivots by virtue OF you generating so much power
@JoelSnape1
@JoelSnape1 Год назад
Hey hey! Thanks for this extremely well thought out comment, I'll give this movement a shot. I think I explained myself badly in the video: I agree that a two-handed push will do very little for punching power, but I think the benefit of a *unilateral* push like a one-armed bench press is that it absolutely lights up your core, getting you used to generating the tension inside it that you need for powerful strikes. Definitely interesting to hear it talked about as a pulling movement though, not something I've come across before. Where do you stand on stuff like the landmine press/row?
@RaggedyCatProductions
@RaggedyCatProductions Год назад
@@JoelSnape1 so from my perspective, and I'm not as well versed on s&c as you - I think landmine press/row are good purely because they are getting you to train your body as a whole. So say when you do a landmine press, it's not enough to move your arm, your core, your legs all have to be engaged an active and you need to be rooted in order to do it properly, and that understanding of being grounded should translate into boxing! Commando pull ups are THE perfect exercise for developing practical clinch strength if you do muay thai, judo, mma etc. too as they train your body to pull down in the same motion you'd use in a double collar tie, which is outstanding. I should say though I didn't mean to swoop in and go 'this is WRONG' - because I do think you should be doing bench press because overall muscle strength will still improve your power. It's a great video, it's just a little mistake that I notice a lot of people making - which is reasonable given that a punch usually LOOKS as though its pushing out

Loved the vod. Lots of good advice and example workouts; however, with the explained or layout comment. Do you normally have a strongman day? Or do you insert 1A+B or 2A+B into Upper/Lower Day?
@JoelSnape1
@JoelSnape1 Год назад
Glad you liked it. Sorry if I've confused matters, I usually alternate between upper body and lower, so a good week might go: Monday: Upper body vertical push (etc) Wednesday: Lower body (squats) Friday: Upper body horizontal push (etc) Saturday: Strongman If I only get time to train three times a week I'll just keep alternating the workouts as above, so some weeks I do upper body twice, some weeks legs twice - but I might throw a bit more upper body into strongman day so I'm still hitting it. (the only other thing I'd say is, if I've only got access to strongman kit 1 day a week, I'll just prioritise that and make it more of an all-round workout)

Great video, very inspired. Just two quick questions I have that I wouldn’t mind getting your perspective on 1.) On your lower body squat day you say you do some kind of heavy squat followed by something lighter like walking lunges. What about on your deadlift day? Do you follow it up with something like a glute bridge or Kb swing or some other kind of hip hinge/hamstring focused exercise? 2.) A sixth movement that I think is crucial for Kratos would be some sort of rotational movement, to help him out during combat when swinging his axe. You do mention sledgehammer swings in the beginning and I DEFINITELY think that is something Kratos would do. But unless someone has access to a sledgehammer and a tire at home, I don’t think many gyms would have this kind of advance equipment. So in your personal opinion, what kind of rotational exercises would you include if you wanted to? And if so, where would you put them? Maybe as some kind of finisher maybe? I do apologise if I’ve rambled on quite a bit but I was just really curious and was interested in what you would say. Many thanks
@JoelSnape1
@JoelSnape1 Год назад
Thanks James! To answer these: 1. Yeah I'll typically do romanian deadlifts or hamstring ball curls for this - I don't really do glute bridges as I think they're pretty tough to set up effectively and they do a number on my CNS. Weirdly, they're also much less useful for Brazilian jiu-jitsu than you'd think. If I do KB swings it's usually as part of a finisher - maybe a tabata style set or just a set of 50. 2. Yes, good point on the hammer stuff. So for rotational work I do a lot of stuff with the landmine - landmine twist and press, for instance. I also really rate the Pallof press with a band or a cable - I'll usually superset that with some hanging toes to bar as an abs finisher. Hope that helps!

I think an important question would be what do you eat?
@JoelSnape1
@JoelSnape1 Год назад
That IS a good question. Short version: Breakfast and dinner is almost always protein and veggies, lunch usually something less healthy like a sandwich. Protein shake on the days I train, quite often protein oats or bar on the days I don't. I try to get two litres of water in every day, don't drink calories (lattes, juice, whatever) and have about two beers a week. I do eat a LOT of biscuits (UK version) though. At some point, I might do a video on this stuff.

See, I get a lot of clean and jerk vibes which is an actual Olympic lift. So include that too.
@JoelSnape1
@JoelSnape1 Год назад
That's fair! Although I'd argue that most of the times Kratos (and normal people) put things ahead they use more of a push press motion than a jerk, as it's slightly less technical.
@lukelyon1781
@lukelyon1781 Год назад
@@JoelSnape1 well, I think it depends from what position exactly he starts lifting. Some lifts are definitely shoulder presses like you said, but others he's clearly picking the weight off the ground, lifting it up to shoulder position, then jerking into an overhead press. So both are valid, I guess it's just a matter of perspective😁
