I am not a mechanic.. I’m just gonna say that right now. I was given a 15 husq rider and I decided to learn me something. I am all over RU-vid. And I’m ADHD as hell.. so I need to know why every part does what and what’s the cause and effect etc. you my sir, nailed it! Thank you! I learned a lot!

Thank you! I hate how every other video I watched said, “don’t mess with the governor, you’ll mess it up” or “it’s made of magic that’s too hard to explain just let an expert fix it”. You’re the only one that explained it, in less than 3 minutes and now it makes total sense that the governor pushes the throttle towards idle with centripetal force. That totally makes sense now why a broken governor would not naturally go to idle.

Thank you so much. I'm repairing my tractor. Someone else took pieces off for me and I had no idea what was going on to put it all back in place. After several days of searching videos I ran across this one that answered all my questions. This video was so very helpful in making sure I got everything back where it belonged.

I have an RPM reader from amazon, actually it measure water temp as well , so it was very helpfull to know how may RPM I have. Thanks. Ben

@@WeekendHobbyMechanic Just so you know, I do mower refurbishing as a "hobby" and getting some of the engines to run right has been a challenge. My most recent engine was giving me issues with surging after doing everything I could think of. This video got me past the hurdle of tuning the governor and now the engine starts right up even in low idle and just purrs at all RPM. Keep up the good work!

Got a riding mower, a Troy Bilt TB30. Recently had a surging engine. Thought it was the carburetor- which I replaced. Also replaced spark plug, fuel filter, fuel lines. There is a “disconnect” between the throttle and the governor. The surging has mostly disappeared, but it still oscillates a little. When I start the mower and push to full throttle, the governor doesn’t move. Do you believe I have a bad governor, a bad governor spring, or a belt/blade/etc issue …? Thanks for the video and help.
@WeekendHobbyMechanic
@WeekendHobbyMechanic Год назад
If you have a bad governor, your motor would run at full throttle all the time. If it hunts just a little I would run it like that. If your carburetor has a pilot jet, you can try turning it 1/2turn ccw .

I was mowing the other day and the lawn was still wet from rain the day before. After getting fed up of stopping every 20 seconds to clean the grass out I decided to just try to finish the little strip i had left and ended up stalling the mower out. Pretty stupid of me but after cleaning the grass out i tried starting and the engine wouldn’t turn over. My battery is getting old but never had issues before. I ended up jump starting it with another battery and it started hard and now has a very high wide open rpm. The leaver works as it should to adjust the throttle but now what used to be wide open is now about 3/4 throttle. If i had to guess im gonna say it gained another 1000 rpm but i have no way to measure it other then just by ear. Ever since then iv had to jump start it every time and it turns over hard before starting. I checked the governor spring and all the linkages and everything looks fine. Any idea what might have happened? I cant find anything online. I can just run it at 3/4 throttle but i dont want to do anymore damage if i did mess it up bad
@WeekendHobbyMechanic
@WeekendHobbyMechanic Год назад
Take the plastic cover off the top of the engine. Make sure the governor arm is down. Push it up and see if it closes the throttle plate. Close the throttle plate by hand at the carburetor (1:15) and start the engine (e-brake on). The governor arm will go up and close the throttle. If it doesn’t, you have a big problem.
@justinjones8806
@justinjones8806 Месяц назад
What does it mean when the shaft coming out of the engine doesn't have enough power to push the arm up? I removed the springs that were attached to the arm and it has barely enough power to move the arm up.
@WeekendHobbyMechanic
@WeekendHobbyMechanic Месяц назад
The governor arm should be free to move when the engine is not running. When the engine is running the arm should move up. If you push the arm down the motor should increase in rpm.

Hey how are you doing? You have helped me so much in the past my friend. Just checking in on your channel making sure all is well. My spring mower flips started off great. I also just got the best deal I think I have ever gotten so far. Pz60 husqvarna zero turn….280 hours…the mower plus a 7x16 enclosed trailer for 1200 bucks.seems like starter is no good though. How much do you think that mower could fetch? So far I sold a JD LT150 for 1400$ and a JD LA125 for 1500. Still got a yt4000 with triple bagger to sell, another JD LT150 and 2 craftsman lt1000s with Vtwins. This is my first season doing this so I’m hoping to learn a lot for next season. I still have that yt4000 with snow plow you helped me out with regarding changing the camshaft release. It runs good. Figured out the smoke was from residual oil on the muffler being burnt off. For some reason though it shuts off when I try to engage the PTO. Any ideas?

Look at your governor arm. Push it down to see if the rpm goes higher. It might be an internal problem. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ze7aW_pSuko.html&pp=ygUZU2V0dXAgZ292ZXJub3Igam9obiBkZWVyZQ%3D%3D

HI, Thanks for your reply. I have checked your instructions, still the same. I have managed to run the engine with a manual fixed throttle, taken idle spring off and added a small return spring on carb spindle. What I have noticed no matter how I rev the engine, the governor shaft does not rotate at all. Is that a clue. New Governor on, original was perfect but changes it anyway. The shaft was not moving anyway, that's why I stripped the engine.

Hi i have old 12.5 Briggs with side plate Gov that seems ok and smooth running and loose when idle throttle then tight at full throttle BUT i can only get 3/4 power and push throttle further and no change. @@WeekendHobbyMechanic No, carb and engine are perfect as if i just move the govt arm myself i get full power, so the arm isnt automatically moving enough to give me full power. Either the shaft has turned back a touch or the gov spring is too soft or tight? The throttle lever is moving the govt arm but only to a point and thats why i can only get to about 3/4 power and move throttle more and no rpm change. somethings slightly out with the gov part as i said i can order full throttle my my fingers moving that arm a little.

@WeekendHobbyMechanic I removed the engine, found that the Governor arms were at the bottom of the crank case. Luckily, No damage found. Just the two arms and the sheered off pins in them. All pieces collected, engines cleaned out, new governor replaced and motor back together. My both tabs on this Mechanical Choke aren't set correctly for the bottom spring or the top siding at the #2 position. Before I start this 24hp B&S up, what is your recommendation for position setting the spring to the governor arm and the position of tension or spring slop to the mechanical positions when rotated? There's really nothing out there but your video when setting up or adjusting rpm. Did what your video suggested. Dialed it right in. Thank you! This was very helpful.
