How the Magic fell from the Shaq-Penny '90s powerhouse to the NBA's basement

The Orlando Magic were one of the luckiest expansion franchises ever. Consecutive lottery wins handed them Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway, which allowed them to go from nothing to the NBA Finals in just 6 years. The Magic looked like the team of the future .... but they weren't. Losing Shaq played a huge part in that, but so did major injuries, a few bad moves, and some very good moves that backfired because of bad luck.

@@nathanritscherle6667 Well, by the time Howard joined the Lakers (2012) he was damaged goods. He relied entirely on his athleticism, and after the back injury he was never the same. Had he stayed with the Magic, Orlando would've had a lesser version of Howard, on a max contract, at a time where the league was transitioning into making traditional centers obsolete. I think the 1979 Sonics would make a great episode for this series. People even SHAQ forget to mention Kobe was 18 and not Kemp or LeBron James big. He was more like Kevin Garnett and needed body development. Kevin took 1 season to really develop that but he was 19 as a rookie. Kobe was truly 18 and a guard. He needed two years and by 99 he was near Penny good except he played more off ball 🏀 and was with SHAQ in his true prime. Kobe had less responsibility in 99 with SHAQ than Penny had in 94 and 95 with SHAQ. By 2000 and 2001 it's hard to argue that Penny was better than Kobe by that time. Kobe in 2000 and 2001 is Penny in 94 95 and 96. By 97 Penny hit a wall 🧱 and his assists took a hit with his fg% immediately without SHAQ in 97. Kobe by 2002 was averaging near the same points as SHAQ. Penny never got that close to 28 ppg.

The 4 missed free throws by Nick in Game 1 of the 95 NBA Finals wasn't his only miscue. On the following play, he didn't take the delay of game during the out of bounds. This led to Kenny Smith getting a better look at a 3-pt shot, which he buried sending the game into OT. In the closing moments, he was unable to keep Drexler from going right, which was Drexler's dominant-hand. The drive to the basket by Drexler prompted Shaq to come over with help defense. This left Olajuwon alone under the basket for a game winning tip-in and a 120-118 Rockets victory.

I can't say that I remember anything from the mid-90's Magic, but I do remember how much fun it was to watch that 2009 team, and I remember there being a crazy atmosphere in their home arena during that playoff run. It's a shame they haven't been able to maintain success, because those fans DO show up in large quantities when the team is good.

Still blows my mind the Magic fumbled Tim Duncan because of Doc not letting wives on the team plane. Who knows if Hill stays healthy in that timeline, but a prime Duncan and T-Mac combo would've been incredible.

Sports teams didn't know about how to treat injuries back then. Basically, their logic was to try to get guys to fight through potentially serious injuries, and the Magic did this with Hardaway. Not only that, but being stupid enough not to go all in with Shaq, sealed their fate.

The "What if" Orlando Magic dynasty that never happend is one of the most interesting theories in NBA history IMO. The Magic could have made that happend and it was not at all to far off the mark. BUT as we all know already the loss of Shaquille O'neal, injuries to Penny Hardaway and Anderson's dropp and more just shot the franchise in the foot(s). The Magic was SO CLOSE to take over the crown after the Chicago Bulls dynasty had ended due to aging, but if a team can't hold up togheter, stay focus & dedicated like MJ's Bulls did in the late 80's to develop and evolve, then you regardless of potential tallent will never reach that top. The Magic really looked like the next Bulls dynasty for a couple of years. IMO, if I could have decided in any way, I would have traded the Lakers dynasty for a Magic dynasty!

I always thought that the Magic had the all-time worst medical staff in the NBA. The amount of players who got injured while plating for them is mind-blowing (Penny, Shaq, Seikaly, Hill, McGrady). On the other hand, the Phoenix Suns always managed to extend players' careers with top-notch physicians.
