As a guy from the shipping industry, 2-8 degrees Celsius is a really common commodity temperature, so there won’t need to be any new infrastructure to move this new vaccine. That’s not the case for the others as their refrigeration requirements are way lower than most non-specialized refrigeration can handle.

The RNA ones are the same requirements as IVF supplies for livestock. Now the question is, are people thinking of & taking advantage of this? My guess would be no in a lot of cases, particularly with the developed world. We DOUBLED ventilator availability overnight in Australia by simply registering all veterinary ventilators that were in fact ex-human ones & suitable to use again on humans after a basic service by the army, but I've not heard of any other country doing that, so I'll bet they're missing available resources on the vaccine too

As a guy working in a community hospital lab, I can concur. We have plenty of 2-8 fridges, and freezers that go down to -30, but that's as far as we can go without dry ice (which brings its own additional challenges and regulations). The J&J vaccine will be huge because of it storage conditions and its single dose.

That would be a good topic for a video I agree! In simple terms though, in emergency use, it's just proven to be safer than the virus as opposed to tougher safety rules. Additionally, there are issues with the need to use EXACTLY as authorised, which can be a serious problem eg the initial covid test in the US (approved under emergency use authorisation) had an issue with a component that was testing for all coronaviruses for some bizarre reason & that malfunctioned the tests & made them not work on covid. The emergency use authorisation though required that they be used with that component in it, even though the tests could be made fully functional & accurate by simply removing it. Full authorisation is far more flexible in it's use. Same thing with the vaccines & varying the time between doses, again the problem is the emergency use authorisation, otherwise the US would have already switched to a single shot for everyone, since that's all that's needed to prevent hospitalisation & death
@mtcynthus
@mtcynthus 3 года назад
@@unyieldingmonotony4453 The particular trial I’m in is the ENSEMBLE 2 trial (www.ensemblestudy.com/#!/ -scroll down a bit on that page), and there are 30,000 volunteers. But you’re right; all the vaccinations do comprise a rough long-term trial.
@Gulgathydra
@Gulgathydra 3 года назад
Another reason the one-month comparison is not fair is that it is measured *one month after the second shot* for two-dose vaccines, compared to one month after the only shot for J&J. It is comparing 4-week numbers to 7 or 8 week numbers, and the second stage trials of J&J noted protection continued to increase after the one month mark... up to 100% of the test group over time (although the test group was fairly small, because second stage trials are small).

@@catalindeluxus8545 Pfizer and Moderna's vaccine had only about 60% efficacy after the first, which is very, very comparable to J&J's. @IHateUniqueUsernames
@IHateUniqueUsernames 3 года назад
Well, in both cases, the vaccines are measured 4-weeks after the delivery of their final prescribed dose; so I think it is a fair comparison. Since J&J and Pfizer, for example, have apparently comparable 1-dose rates, J&J could arguably have chosen to recommend a booster dose, assuming it would make a difference.

It truly is amazing, isn't it? I love the game _Plague Inc._ and one of the most infuriating aspects was always, when your disease is know and a priority, treatments, vaccines, and cures are murder on your chance of winning. It never seemed realistic; that they could have treatments out in seemingly no time alqays broke the reality of the game. Here we are, in reality, and just a year after this totally new to science virus was discovered, we had two vaccines already. A third now, and more still being worked on. It really illustrates what can happen when nearly the entire world's scientific might is brought to bear on a single target. The "flaw" in the game really is how it could work.

If you didn't have the virus, it prevents you from getting most of the infection effects, so you are less likely to get the long-term or any other Covid effects, and less likely to spread the virus. Because if you are vaccinated and get infected, your immune system will get rid of the viruses and virus-producing cells much faster, so they have less time to make problems or make you notice it. If you had Covid before getting vaccinated, then it's too late, it only makes you less likely to get reinfected and doesn't do anything to fix any damage the virus may have caused already.

Hey! I am not a professional of any kind (and also not a native speaker so please excuse any grammar/spelling mistakes) but my dad and his wife are in a clinical study about the biontech shot and get regular testing, they have to keep track of their body temperature and they get blood drawn regularly to see if the antibodies have changed in numbers and if there is actual coronavirus present or not. When i got my shot Astra Zeneca, they handed me a sheet that i had to fill out and bring to the next appointment where i had to write down how i reacted to the shot and what side effects i had so they can get a broad picture of side effects/effectiveness. Our health departments keep track of people that are infected/had contact with infected people and when you are positive/had contact with someone who has covid, you get put in isolation and you also have to journal if you are vaccinated, which vaccine you got, your body temperature and if you have symptoms for at least 14 days and until your test comes back negative I don't know for sure because i did not read all the pages of paperwork when i was in isolation because of contact but i see no other reason for these journals/ symptom diaries as authorities call them than for further study of the virus and the vaccines. Hope this is a little bit of a good answer to you, sending a lot of health to you and your loved ones :)

@@mike5587 Depends what you're comparing. If vaccine group has more than placebo that'd be a no-no. If you want to compare different vaccines you always need to check the populations. The study enrolled 44 percent of participants in the United States. Seventy-four percent of participants in the U.S. are White/Caucasian; 15 percent are Hispanic and/or Latinx; 13 percent are Black/African American; 6 percent are Asian and 1 percent are Native American. Forty-one percent of participants in the study had comorbidities associated with an increased risk for progression to severe COVID-19."

The more stable DNA variant is an AMAZING tool for distribution, even with the lower efficacy, as it means we can get vaccines to more areas that don't have the infrastructure to keep the mRNA vaccine stable and there's a lower risk of the vaccine being broken down prior to use

I'm not a bioengineer, but I can't imagine that it's as easy to scale up DNA-in-a-virion-coat as it might be to scale up RNA-in-a-lipid-nanoparticle. In graduate school for a rotation project I had to create proteoliposomes--not the same but possibly similar?--and that was merely sonication. To package DNA in a virion coat you'd need a biological system to do that: either something like a cell line (which would have to be optimized and immortalized) or eggs (like for the seasonal flu vaccine, which introduces egg-specific mutations that makes it less effective . . . ) I'm just saying that the Pfizer and Moderna strategies seem generally more efficient to me.
