For me, this is the best instruction on taping and mudding. I can't afford a lot of stuff but will try to do things I can't afford to hire others to do. Taping and especially mudding is an art. I can passably hang sheetrock. I can poorly tape joints and I know I suck big eggs at mudding. However, I watched this series of videos a few years ago and I watched each one several times before taping and mudding a farmhouse I gutted and remodeled. I did all the wall work for smooth wall from this video series and the walls came out very nicely. There are very few imperfections because I simply came as close as I could following Kody's techniques. Plus, my wife loves the house. Now I am about to mud a two bedroom, 2 1/2 bath barndominuium I framed, did plumbing, electrical, insulation, etc for my 30 year old autistic son. I re-watched all the videos and feel confident I can do at least as good as I did on the farmhouse a few years back. Thanks so much Kody. You have no idea how helpful you've been.

great job man I can tell you know what you doing I've been finishing drywall for 40 years I don't understand why there has to be so many haters on every RU-vid channel everybody does a little bit different so for someone to criticize the way you do it is ridiculous you have good control you make a flat spot in the middle on your butt joints that way you can feel to the side on the skim coat exactly the way you finish but joints especially with a hawk and a trowel

We use a self enclosed hand machine called a ' Banjo ' . Shaped much like the instrument. Drop in a roll of tape run it out the end .. drop mud in the adjoining compartment. VIOLA !Pull the tape out and it is loaded with mud .. run it down the seam.. you or a helper follows wiping it down . 'Done' install tape in reverse and ceiling can be done . the Banjo can be purchased for under a hundred Bucks. Had mine for 50 pluse years and still working great. That aside , Chad is a champ ! :)

I am actually impressed most of the times you see someone trying to finish drywall on the channel that they don't have a clue what they're doing you're doing it just right nothing finishing a butt joint like a hawk and trowel I have a custom-made mixer that you would just love it's four bladed each blade has two holes about an inch and a half in diameter it's made out of stainless steel at least the blades are the shaft is hexagon and I would say the blades are probably 6 or 7 inches long and they sit right on the bottom it will actually draw mud in Word instead of throwing it out great job dude

So I guess I've been doing this a few years now. I never really realized how fast our crew was until I watch these videos. We tape with a banjo now, but still manually float. With a pan, 10inch knife for Windows, long, corners. Then a 12inch for bud joints.... Honestly.. We like to run through the whole house with our 10inch knife then do the bud joints last after its sat up for a hour or 2.... It's usually so smooth after a couple passes of sand paper that the skimming process is a breeze. 2 people can sand and skim a 300 sheet house in about 5 hours.... This guys tools seem like it would take longer then I'd prefer... Everyone has their own techniques tho.

I just tried the trowel method for the first time after using the large knife for many years and It’s not easy!! After feathering when I go down the middle, the curve of the trowel just gouges the mud on the each end. I don’t understand the curve. If the trowel was 24 inches long then great. Just go up and down. As it is it just rips lines on each side. I’ll keep practicing

Thanks guys. I wished that I had watched this video before I built(my first) laundry room in my basement. 180 square feet. I had to use 6" Mosaic tiles to border the entire room where my sheet rock meets in the center. I can clearly see a 6" bevel right around the entire joints. 3" in the upper board and 3" in the lower board. Does it matter which way you turn the tape to do the flats? Everton
@uptokode
@uptokode 8 лет назад
+Everton Oliphant The tape is pre folded (sort to speak) and has a seam down the middle. Make sure where it would fold and make the "V" that the "V" part goes against the wall. I did it backwards once and i had to fill a bit more to cover where it bumped out. Hope I'm making sense.

Kody Horvey I recall a previous video where the tape was initially applied, and there was a lot of information regarding the consistency of the mud. This video seems to skip over the concept of consistency, so I was wondering how much thicker the mud is on this coat. Thanks for your help, and for the great instructional videos.
@uptokode
@uptokode 9 лет назад
bbmungo Yes good point! 1st coat would be thicker than the mud used for taping. The mud will shrink less if less water is used to thin it and since your first 2 coats are used to fill you want to keep shrinkage to a minimum. Make it a consistency that is easy to apply but won't sag or settle. Overall 1st coat mud would be the thickest and your last coat would be thinned down in order to do a nice light skim coat.

I must say you've got great mud application skill... I don't understand how you can get to that level and not realize you do flats before butts, that's sheetrock 101... I also think it might be worth mentioning that some butts may dip into the wall rather than protrude and just need to be hit down the middle.... All that aside you do have skills and are adept with your tools....
@prominentsinglesinternatio4168
Why would it matter wether you do flats before butts ? Just curious
@mrreams711
@mrreams711 5 лет назад
@@prominentsinglesinternatio4168 You typically would choose this order because the flat joint, after finishing, does not protrude beyond the surface. Whereas a butt joint does which will impact the finish of the flat joint later. It's basically boils down to layers. If you look a cross section of the wall, flats would be the thinner level as opposed to butts.

Very good job my friend. I prefer the plastic corner beads instead of the paper but that is personal preference. I am just glad to see that you were not using any mesh tape. I see too many people using it on Hugely Gay TV (HGTV). You know who you are and you should be castrated. Just because it is quicker doesn't make it better. It flexes and cracks. I also pre-fill with sandable 90, I find it hardens stronger and makes the seams stronger. Having written all that you could out crack fill me any day of the week.

I've watched a lot of jokers trying to teach stuff on RU-vid and in real life, one the don't look the part, know the knowledge well, and rush like there out of time, and this man is not one of those guys, this guy knows his job, his way around the job site and is presentable for his position as a mudder. Thanks for the videos, really great stuff, you are a excellent mudder, wish more people were experts in there field as you are sir.

This vid made the biggest difference in the work that I did in my own home. I would have never considered using a trowel like that, but holy cow, what a difference it made. Question:, Near the sheetrock in the local big box store are curved trowels. I tried it and it was difficult to achieve the results I was after. Next day I purchased a flat concrete finishing trowel and had much better luck. +Kody Horvey, is your trowel flat, or curved? Is one better than the other? and by the way... Stellar, stellar work. and a great video to boot.

21 year vet and former taper instructor. We use all depends on the walls if framed good walls are easy . What he doesn’t show is you should check the tape and see if you need mud on one side more than the other . But usually it’s similar to what he did .

Think it was a little thick for 1st coat. My 1st coat is 8 inch knife and I can still see the tape. 2nd coat is 10 inch trowel, final coat depends on 12 o4 14 inch trowel. Commercial setting, 1st coat 10 inch trowel, final coat 12 inch trowel. I'd still hire him, you never stop learning.

And when you don't have those tape joints to start and stop your application runs? I'm trying to mud over partially removed wallpaper and a rough wall that's been remodeled numerous times. My trowel applications have to go from floor to ceiling. I really hate drywall work...btw.

West coast tappers use pan and knife,east cost and just about everywhere else like the HAWK AND TOWEL method. I keep the trowels for concrete.
