As a longtime Glock owner and firearm enthusiast I've learned that we can easily be tempted and enthralled by all the aftermarket upgrades for the Glock. But, first stop and think carefully about it. Do you need to? So, if you move forward - be sure you know what your doing! As gun owners we sometimes start to think about switching out components to assist in our pursuits of becoming better shooters. This leads to a commonly asked question by new Glock owners; "what should I change in my Glock to control the RECOIL? The answer is the recoil spring assembly (RSA). However, the answers are varied and dependent on many factors such as; the shooters capabilities, will the Glock be used for self-defense, for every-day carry (EDC), concealed carry, competition shooting, etc.,.
The recoil spring assembly controls the recoil which causes aka.,. "flip" or "rise" of the barrel axis, and the - forward slide movement - which follows the recoil of the slide causes "dip". Important to note, it's not as simple as switching an RSA out for either a lighter or heavier weight spring. Recoil spring assemblies (RSA's) come in different rates or weights that can help improve on the gun's recoil that must be calculated into to say, "the load that is fired" - such as, for example: a light custom load, a 115grain, or a +P load. Replacing RSA's can have potential adverse affects in the functioning of the handgun if not tuned correctly with the overall components of the Glock such as: failure-to-eject, failure-to-extract, failure to feed, and others. The other considerations are ammo brand, ported barrels, ported slides, etc., So, think twice about changing components in an already well designed handgun.
It can be stated empirically that for most handgun owners it's the norm, no matter the handgun owners purpose, is the ability of the owners to handle the gun safely and consecutively aim, shoot, and hit the designated target. The ability to "shoot well" should be an ongoing goal and responsibility for all gun owners. The reason being, is that when the handgun is unexpectedly deployed, the shooter can be confident in his/her abilities to control the firearm and where the rounds are being sent. For instance, for a competitive shooter must fast and well above others at the firing line. In contrast, it's important for the homeowner to be able to shoot in a controlled manner to stop a home invasion. Therefore, with the Glock as a chosen handgun with it's versatility and ability to be fine tuned, it can be fun and educational when changing parts out of the Glock to reduce "recoil" which is a main goal with shooters in becoming a better shooter.
This educational video is an introduction to the basic principles of what a recoil spring assembly (RSA) does in a semi-automatic pistol. The basic function of the recoil spring (RSA) is described and shown in this video using a Glock 43X MOS pistol with all OEM parts. This handgun uses a dual or "variable" spring as opposed to a conventional spring found in earlier Glock models.
If you've just purchased a new Glock or semi-auto handgun, I highly recommend you read the gun manual and get to know and use your handgun before you start switching out parts. Handguns made by different manufactures have different characteristics, therefore , not all semi-auto handguns are the same.
I created this video as a starting point to understanding the basic function of a recoil spring. I describe in simple terms how a lighter and heavier recoil spring affects the guns slide, but I do not get into the weeds about triggers, different brand of ammo or loads, ported barrels and slides, etc., I kept it simple.
I am not sponsored or monetized on this channel so a LIKE and maybe... a Subscribe. It sure would help out this old-man. I live out of my Jeep and travel for filmmaking and photography.
I used Davinci Resolve for this video. I recently left Adobe after years.

I'm shooting 124 gr bullet, FMJ. Additionally, I just mounted the HEHolosun507K-GR X2 reflex/reflective micro-optic on my Glock and zeroed it here at the range.
