Over the last three months, the broad proxy war involving Iran has made it to the forefront of the headlines. Although it is easy to see the Gaza War as the catalyst, the deeper origins of Iran's resurgence go back to February 2022. This is the story of how Russia's invasion of Ukraine created an economic and political opportunity for Iran, which is now playing out in real time.

1:21 February 2022, not February 2023. I knew the changing of the calendar was going to be the death of me, and I am sure it is only going to get worse now that we are in 2024. I also don't like how the average video has increased by ten seconds now that I have to specify which year everything is.

I think it's important to stress that Caspian sea basin (mainly Volga) is an important trade route used since ancient times. Russia and Iran have a cheap and direct trade route safe from "Western" or Ukrainian interference. The term for Middle East in Russian is "Ближний Восток", literally "Near East". Iran is a natural trade partner for Russia.
@jeffbenton6183
@jeffbenton6183 3 месяца назад
Excellent points. It's worth mentioning that American academics (especially those working in archeology) refer to it as the Near East as well. So does the CIA. I don't know which idiot got everyone to call it the Middle. As far as I'm concerned, "Middle East" means India (halfway between Near East and Far East, roughly). On an unimportant note, as a guy who was playing as a Persian faction in a certain grand strategy game, the total lack of trad routes in and port on the Caspian Sea really infuriated me while playing.

My thinking on that whole thing was that a country will when pushed to the wall find a way to do it, either sanctions busting, eg importing coffee machines and ripping the chips out, or will bite the bullet and build their own factory and take the economic hit if they have no other choice. This is the point of what happened at the time of the Iran Deal. The Obama Admin realised that Iran had hit the point where sanctions weren't going to stop Iran anymore, it was time for a new strategy, let's loosen em up, let's give em a taste of the good life, show them they want the moolah. In return they slow their roll on the big booms. Then we move to stage 2 they roll back the progress so far for example and we give them even more candy. It seemed to me here in Australia it was working. The Iran of 2015 was just about to seriously crack open the reforms. There was positive noises coming from Iran. Then some idiot who probably has tertiary syphillitic symptoms got elected by a bunch of other idiots who wanted to own the libs and here we are. The Biden Admin won't now go back to the deal as that well is thoroughly poisoned in the US voting public's mind. What's the way forward? Fudged if I know.

I think fundamentally the problem here is everyone understands that the people in Gaza are in pain. It’s just only one side sees that pain as political. The Arab world when they look at Gaza they see themselves. When the United States looks at Gaza they see the other. I think the problem is that the individual level this has become a moral issue. Some thing that cannot be hand waved away by the other side. Before Israel was making good strides in diplomacy but after this I’m not sure how things are going to work out. These countries are not the same nations they were in the 1970s. A war today could go very different.

Oil sanctions are still in place but the U.S. has chosen not to enforce them properly these last 2 years. This to lower gas prices for economic / electoral reasons. This has given Iran even more cash. Once the election is over expect the sanctions regime to tighten up. Should have happened last year.

Russia is a huge benefactor whether it be Israel and Gaza or Iran and proxies vs boats. Russia and Iran are applying their own sanctions upon the entire west. The question is, why can’t Russia and Iran just be nice and look inward to see how they can be of benefit to their citizens.

They saw that cheap drones were a massive force multiplier. And they are ahead of the curve on that. Insurgency can now easily contend with even the US. If the Houthis really tried we know they could saturate a cruiser or destroyer and take a US navy ship out. Iran can do the same, it can also unleash massive waves of these drones at Israel and the Saudis. America doesnt have enough forces to stop this in the middle east

Sanctions do not work on a country that it's own resources. They merely make a country more independent. The vast majority of items are imported because it is cheaper to do so, not because a country is incapable of manufacturing it.
@NmaeUnavailablesigh
@NmaeUnavailablesigh 3 месяца назад
Making things more expensive is half the point. The other half is the many things they cannot produce domestically in the quantities they need.
@gimmethegepgun
@gimmethegepgun 3 месяца назад
Having resources doesn't mean that the country is able to utilize them to the extent that they need to. If they've invested heavily in extraction but not in refinement or manufacturing, instead shipping the resources somewhere else that does have that capability, then they're in trouble if that line gets cut. Eventually they will develop the necessary means to use those resources themselves, but in the meantime they're crippled, and even after it's still much more expensive because places that have specialized can operate much more efficiently.
@JosephKano
@JosephKano 3 месяца назад
@gimmethegepgun however the point is they will when pushed to the wall find a way to do it, either sanctions busting, eg importing coffee machines and ripping the chips out, or will bite the bullet and build their own factory and take the economic hit if they have no other choice. It was working. The Iran of 2015 was just about to seriously crack open the reforms. Then some idiot who probably has tertiary syphillitic symptoms got elected by a bunch of other idiots who wanted to own the libs and here we are.

The thing is Russia farmed so much out to much more efficient imports and the local industries atrophied. It can be bought back but a huge cost and with a lot of time. That is the pressing issue that Russia can't completely overcome especially if you are talking high end sophisticated gear. Notice that what Russia is getting from Iran and North Korea is fairly simply things like prop-propelled drones and artillery shells. A lot of import substitution by these regimes is actually concentrating on weapons systems that they can make themselves with their technology but lack significant capabilities. There is also the manpower issue. To ramp up semiconductor production for instance, you need not just the facility, equipment and designs but also the people with the skills to operate all that. And that is a big problem that is decades worth of effort to train the skilled workers requires. The issue is if the West maintains support of Ukraine, they can simply out-produce Russia without a sweet. The West can essentially make everything required to win and in volume. So ramping up weapons production is actually straightforward, what is lacking is the will to invest in that increased output and maintain support. Another way to put it, the West ability to support Ukraine to victory is politically constrained, while for Russia it is manpower and technology access constrained.
@gimmethegepgun

Most of it is still a leftover from trumps administration though. He showed a lot of weakness and spent his time cosying up to all the dictators in the world. He turned his back on alies in the middle east, forced a chaotic pullback out of afghanistan, let putin parade around as peacebringer in syria, let poohbear be the savior during the pandemic, caused unrest and showed the usa to be an u reliable partner in nato during his administration. And is making the usa a unreliable partner yet again now with ukraine by blocking that aid. Is a major cause of the political mess cripling usa foreign policy at the moment. And is even talking about the usa retreating from the global stage even more. Apeasement from chamberlain and friends is what gave us ww2. All of that allowed opponents of the usa to gain strength and more brave and willing to test how far they can push it. Actions in global politics rarely have immediate impact, they take years for the concequences of these things to become apperent and play out. And forcing drastic shifts always cause many unexpected side effects. This is simply what a bull in a chinashop appraoch causes when you are such a key player in the global world order that exists. And the usa has enough enemies that will exploit every show of weakness to the max every chance they are given.. Biden has mostly been playing fire brigade, trying to mend damaged international relations and managing the mess created and create a balance once again. It is much easier to break things and cause chaos then it is to clean up after it and regain trust.
