I did this on my 2010 F150 years ago. Put a little glue in the flat head screw driver slots for a little extra deterrence. Just bought a 2023 Taco limited and put clamps on it as well. Cheap and quick.
My tailgate was stolen, and I found it on market place and got it back. But now I am noticing a lot of play in the driver side hinge. Can't find a part for the bushing, is there a bushing on the driver side? Or does it just go metal to metal?
I put the hose clamp on but wasn’t a fan. I got the Maggard version. It has a little plastic cover over the hose clamp to help protect from a grinder or screwdriver pry attack. It’s expensive compared to a hose clamp for sure, but I live in a city where that is rampant. Hopefully this will help.
Yeah, saw that simple remedy on KC's Tundra channel, pretty ingenious and real easy. Keeping the tailgate locked is the best option but for people like me, without the power lock option, sometimes you forget to lock it. Good info, Rob!
Not a bad idea except change out the screw on the hose clamp to like a weird star bit screw that nobody carries with them. Even a phillips-head screw would be better than a flathead that you can just stick a knife in
Clamping collars comes with an Key to clamp it at Home Depot made of steel would probably work better just got my tailgate stolen looking for a lock and might go with that and strip the bolt so they can’t remove it even with the key thanks for the tip
Rob, for a $1.79 at ACE Hardware it's worth the trip. What size? Maybe I missed it. Looks like 3/4"-13/4" should work (SAE20). Thanks for the tip. I just locked mine up tonight.
I don't know if you see comments on older videos, but thank you for covering this, I didn't know you had already done it. I saw the clamp solution on another 'tuber's video as well.
hose clamp the tailgate was one of the absolute first things I did to my tacoma... Lol i also chained down and pad locked the spare tire , folks love stealing those too
Rob, I have enjoyed your VIDs. . . Thanks. Side note, I wrapped my hose clamp with electrical tape to protect the paint or rub spots. Again, thanks! Bob
Cut the head off the bolt of the hose clamp with a Dremel disc after installing it so the flat screw driver can not be used to remove it. It can be removed but you just made it 3 times harder and longer time is required to remove it.
Hello Rob. New Tacoma owner here. Thanks for enlightening us on this easy install. The Gladiator tailgate bracket is interesting, anyway to incorporate one for Tacomas? Thank you Rob!
My mod on my truck was putting on a shell where you cannot lower the tailgate unless you unlock the shell window and raise it up. Since my tailgate has no lock itself it was a workaround, albeit an expensive one.
Seems like it would dig into or scratch the paint. Midwest is a salt belt for snow. I've seen a bolt on piece for this like the Gladiator. It was a piece that used the existing bolt. Awesome video point!! Thanks.
Nice video, Rob! I watched this so I could learn how to remove my tailgate to install a slide-in camper in a 3rd gen tacoma which I should be getting soon. Wondering if I can remove the gate but still have a way to use the backup camera?
Is it true the gate chains on our tacoma tailgates are suppose to be lose on the left side only? I was told this by the dealership. Honestly I dont think that is true. Please let me know...
@@RobMotive yeah I have a little bit of play on my side too. I own a 2019 SR5 and just wasn't sure. I asked them to replace it and they told me it supposed to be like that.
I also think it is like the Gladiator and you can lay the cable over the notch to have the gate hold up at 45 degree for hauling lumber etc. Maybe - don't know if cable twists around like that.
Slide some heat shrink over the clamp except where it goes thru the screw. Heat shrink it. It will look cleaner and it helps from scarring the metal from the tight compression.
Tacoma, did you see this video? Can you add that to the list? Great feedback Rob! Thankfully I have the lock and the tonneau cover. Hopefully that's good enough.
I really should do this because I've had may insurance company drop me for having too many claims for things sort of out of my control like hit n run theft and trees falling. I don't think tailgate theft is a problem in my area but if it's that simple why not do that clamp thing to help limit your risk of needing to file a claim.
JUST WELD THE TAILGATE ATTACHMENTS. THAT WAY IF THEY REALLY WANT YOUR TAILGATE, THEY WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE TRUCK. THAT'S IF THEY CAN EVEN START IT UP. 😅. BUT IF THEY ARE REALLY THAT DESPERATE. TOW THE DAM TRUCK & SEE HOW FAR THEY GET 😂.
Big ole scratch under the handle, problem solved. I was flabbergasted that I couldn’t actually take off my 2nd gen tailgate to unload because of the wiring.
I have a 2017 Tacoma. Never thought of anyone stealing my tailgate until today when I saw someone else post in my area that thiers was stolen. Thanks Rob for the tip!
Yeah some people are like why bother I guess those are people with money and time on their hand as for me if can piss somebody off along the way while they're trying to steal from me mission accomplished
have you see or heard of this product called: SaBellCo® Tailgate Lock 2016+ Toyota Tacoma Tailgate Lock - Anti-Theft Lock V2.1B Fits: 2016 thru 2023+ Toyota Tacoma Price: $109.95

Rob, yes the thieves are everywhere didn’t realize the tailgate cost that much, but they do!! I guess the locking tailgate is a must have, glad I have that on the rebel I guess, as far as your gladiator that is pretty cool that they have somewhat of a deterrent for tailgate theft!! Great job FCA on that one!!👍
@@RobMotive yes Boss it covers it but you ends by paying the deductible but I'm grateful with the insurance and your video to learn how to protect the tailgate
This is great! Like you have mentioned, if they really want the gate, they will get it, regardless. It's a deterrent, nothing more, nothing less. If they are willing to stand there and dick around with it, then, they deserve it!
Hey Rob those ugly factory stickers are still there, 3 of them. Did this mod first thing when I saw you do it. Also to make a mod to the mod you could put black shrink tubing on the worm gear. But those stickers gotta go!
