How the Trail Blazers imploded into the Jail Blazers

Who's ready for a wild (albeit ultimately sad) ride?
The very deep Portland Trail Blazers came extremely close to beating the Kobe-Shaq Lakers in game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals. They were up 15 in the fourth! Buttttt LA went on a 15-0 run and won. Still, the Blazers were poised for a bright future, expected to be a serious western threat, to keep putting up a fight with the Lakers.
Their near finals berth could have been the first stone in the path to a dominant future.
But of course the loss and failure to make it to the finals could be the first stone in a totally different path-- one paved with drug arrests, intra-team violence, and a middling record that belied the promise the team once held.
This ride has a steep drop, not for the faint of heart.

Great team, years later it comes out the refs cheated. I was rolling with the Blazers that year & you could see the obvious in that Game 6. Management should have held fast that year coming off the 7 game series & probably would have beat the Lakers the next year. At most they needed a extra big & the GM straight went to overkill with the roster. Chemistry is everything, they would have had the chip before any of the bs started .

Say what you want about Pippin’s antics throughout his career, him sitting on the floor pouting is the most dignified thing he’s done. Honestly he lives reasonably close to me and so I see him in town from time to time and maybe age has mellowed him but he’s the nicest guy. Just don’t make a big scene about it and he’ll happily chat for a moment with a fan. And he’s really tall. Deceptively so…

You guys should start a new series about franchise comebacks, similar to the “Collapse” series. You could do the Nationals, starting with the team coming back to DC and the game 5 NLDS loss to the Cardinals. The collapse could go down through the playoff first round exits until you reach 19-31 in 2019. Then the timeline skyrockets from June 2019 - October 2019 when they won the World Series in unbelievable fashion.

I’m a ‘92 Blazers fan, following them throughout, so thanks for this overview. Sheed, Damon, Bonzi, Z-Bo and the rest were next generation that I enjoyed watching regardless. They were the truth of the time and many things they did are not an issue now. Sheed was the missing piece for Detroit, happy they made it. Great job putting this together, props from the North)

Argh... The Lakers in the early 2000s. Those two free trips to the Finals that the NBA offered them. Really those series against the Blazers and the Kings were really what made them the antagonist of the era - to me at least - and probably what made that Pistons blowout in 2004 even more tasty.

Everyone likes to joke about the Jail Blazers but they had some legit squads before things imploded. Great veteran teams that were in the top of the west consistently. Sheed was dominant in the paint. Still think they got robbed vs the Lakers, around the same time the Kings did. Fun times back then

Two deep (Shaq/Kobe) vs Too deep (Portland). That 2000 Blazers team scared me more than the 2002 Kings. I never felt like at our best we'd lose to Sac, but Portland was absolutely good enough to beat us and win the title. But Blazers went Blazers at THE most important time. And they were never the same after.
