On January 14, a Russian A-50 Mainstay airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft was shot down over the Sea of Azov.
This is one of the most significant hits Ukraine has been able to execute since the conflict started.
There was a lot of speculation about how Ukraine managed to do this since this was a long-range hit.
According to a U.S. Army officer, a U.S.-made Patriot air defense system was used for this.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes how the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system was able to take out a Russian A-50 ?

The crucial difference is that the German Patriot system are mounted directly on trucks, instead of on towed trailers, like the US version. That makes them more mobile and the German instructors trained their Ukrainian students to do rapid redeployment. They woke them up in the middle of the night, as if they were interceptor fighter pilots doing a alarm drill, had them deploy their batteries miles away and then rush back to the hiding spot after a simulated launch. US and other foreign instructors considered that odd, because it isn't usually done under NATO doctrine. Now it has become clear what the plan was and why the Germans mount their Patriot systems differently from everyone else. What she now called "SAMbush" seems to have been German doctrine all along.

Ukraine took a calculated risk and it paid off. The key was that US provided the older but longer range PAC-2 with 99 mile range and massive 186lbs warhead A warhead that size detonating nearly a fighter size target is bad enough but a target the size of an A-50 is 100 percent lethal Now if the West would provide enough batteries , Ukraine could switch from carefully planned shot downs to having a fully operational integrated air defence system (IADS) and completely close down Russian aircraft as well possibly missile attacks

I heard this too and it makes sense, however the other AWACS hit far behind the frontlines wasn't Patriot I think cuz it needed a few hits/missiles to hit the aircraft, and reportedly it was some kind of s200 sam system Ukraine used. A Patriot would have had a kill right away, since the like decoy flares it uses wouldn't confuse the Patriot missile as it could with older systems..

@hanshuber1875 2 месяца назад
your conclusion is wrong. I dont know any evidence that would proof your claim, that patriot missiles arent able to confuse by flares. And the reason, why people think it was a s200 system, is the availability and the range of missile.
@bekeneel

@@hanshuber1875 Cuz they're much modern systems that won't be stopped by cheapest countermeasures like flares.. No aircraft is gonna survive this with some flares lol (patriot missile).

I know this is off topic and may not do much but we have to worry about DEFENSE!!! I saw a few articles on a planned... THIRD... missle defense site in upstate NY. Why are we spending only 1% on homeland security? It would only be $2.5 billion for the 3rd. We spend around $800 billion on military every year. We not only a third but at least fourth or fifth site in Texas and maybe South Dakota. I thought our military had this covered. This is troubling. I'm voting Biden but I can't believe he signed against it. This is no joke.

The S-400 should also be able to shoot down jets over Kiev from their own boarder. Russia claims the system has a range of 400 km 🤔

So how did Ukraine get its Patriot system to within range of the A50 if the Patriot has a range of 120 km?? Where was it deployed so as to hit the A50 over the Sea of Azov?
@Scorpio.1989

Unlike Russia, the US almost always undersells US systems, the DECLASSIFIED range is around 120 km, but it's probably capable of longer range....
@johnsilver9338

PAC-2 has 160km range, while PAC-3 MSE has 120km. It's longest range is PAAC-4 with 180km.

The system has properly been upgraded since this information was declassified. If the S-400 system has a range up to 400 km (if it’s true). Why shouldn’t American made SAM not be able to do the same…
@verdebusterAP
@verdebusterAP 2 месяца назад
There are 5 types of Patriot missiles Ukraine has 3 Pac-2 GEM/C/T Pac-3 CRI Pac-3 MSE The missile Ukraine likely used was PAC-2 GEM variant as its range 99 miles and carries 186lbs warhead Ukraine likely found the best spot where they could place launcher without being seen and brought the bare essentials, a radar, command truck and a launcher with 2 missiles and simply waited The A-50 is there for aerial surveillance for both air and ground targets so likely it was flying in race track pattern getting near shoreline so the radar could get maximum range into Ukraine for surveillance Ukraine likely had other assets monitoring its flight path and once its reached optimal firing range, they powered up . tracked, locked and fired , Once the kill was confirmed, they packed its up and got outta dodge before Russian forces could figure out what happened

The real question is how the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal slammed the Patriot system, and why the Iranian missiles were falling like meteorites from the sky, one after another in Israel...
@Scorpio.1989
@Scorpio.1989 2 месяца назад
the Kinzhal hit one component of one Patriot battery, with some shrapnel, that component was easily replaced and the battery was back up and running in under 2 hours.... the smallest declassified area that a Patriot battery can take up is 1 sq km (247 acres) the likelihood of one Kinzhal missile taking out an entire Patriot missile battery is almost impossible, unless it was using a nuclear warhead...
