What if they used the omnioculars? They can look into the past without interacting with it like a recording or video but does so by letting you actually look into the past. Also they have slow motion abilities to slow the passage of time for the observer. It may be possible to force the time dilation and tunneling effects simultaneously which would theoretically allow the user to look at any point in time so long as they can meet the power requirements but as we know from cannon even powerful time magic has major limits so it's safe to assume the amount of time one could see into the future with this method would far less than as it would require the power source to energize both operations simulatiously

i think instead of the twins intercepting Percy's time turner, Arthur had one. If Percy went to return his, and it's missing, there would be an investigation into it. However, if Arthur had one for any reason, it would be easy to swipe without anyone's knowing. If Arthur doesn't know where it went, then he could easily assume that he either returned it (if it was gone for an extended period of time), or that he simply misplaced it and will find it later. But, Arthur's also a part of the MOM, so, him getting access to one wouldn't be that hard. He could either be given one for his job (maybe he has to use it occasionally to find missing magical items among the muggles), or, he managed to get the paperwork done to get one, or, even just managed to swipe one for himself, and either forged documents for it, or took it at an opportune time (not sure if he's the type to steal a time turner however). In which case, if he loses it, he can't report it as missing to the ministry as they'd have to have 2 investigations, 1 into him having stolen one, and one into the secondary theft. But, I do think that Arthur had one (probably legitimately), and that the twins swiped it at some point and then used it. It's likely that Arthur keeps it locked up somewhere where his kids (theoretically) can't get to it, and only pulls it out when he needs to go to work, and the twins happened to have found it at some point, and use it occasionally, with this event being one of those use cases.

And it's even easier than that: Much simpler to just hide somewhere during the match (say, just outside the stadium), and then just use the time turner once to go back to make the bet and attend the match. They don't say anything so as not to give away the fact that they already know the outcome. If they don't want to violate the "5-hour limit" they can go back in two hops. And yes, it would still work if even just one of them did it.

Even the information exchange is unnecessary. If I were they I would have done the following: 1) Right after the arrival at the place separate from the group and hide somewhere to the end of the game. Till the outcome is known to everyone. Suppose 6:00 pm in the forest. 2) Timetravel back to the morning, join to your gang, place the bet and live normally. 3) When the time is 5:59 pm go back to the forest, see how your past copies return to the morning and go with your evening as usual. Only one timetravel and no self-interactions.

They clearly were already planning on doing some betting (which, in a big event like this, is pretty much a guarantee is gonna happen), I'm sure they studied the possibilities really well and knew it probably mattered more to Krum to catch the snitch than to win.

Yes, there are plenty of real world examples of bets like that, even ones more detailed. Like not only who wins, but how many points each player scores, which sections of the game the points are scored, or even as to how much time passes before the game has been won. And even more outlandish sounding bets out there.

I love the idea of Dobby just being like. Okay this is when the owls leave to deliver mail. Then he teleports to privet drive, wrestles the letter from Hedwig and returns to the Malfoys before they notice he's gone.

1: Elf magic is different from human magic. Dobby can Apparate to places which would be inaccessible to humans, like Hogwarts or Malfoy manor. He also has the power to lok certain "gateways", like the one that leads to Platform 9 3/4. That's my theory. The "ancient love magic" spell Dumbledore used to protect Harry at Privet Drive only locks humans out. Probably it blocks AApparition in the house, as everyone either arrives there through the door or the fireplace. Dobby can exploit the loophole. Locks the barrier around the house so that owls can't pass. They get confused, circle around, then Dobby Apparates there once a day, steals the letters, then goes back to serve the Malfoys. The owls never reach Harry, and it's mentioned no owl ever came that summer. 2: I always thought Hagrid lied.

Flesh-eating slugs could be omnivores. Many animals eat both plants and meat. Normal slugs don't eat human flesh, though. So, a slug that does so in addition to the more typical slug diet would be notable enough that it would be named by that oddity.

Harry actually did offer to let both Ron and Hermione use the textbook, but Hermione insisted on using the "official" version, and Ron had trouble reading Snape's handwriting. If Harry didn't have the textbook from the start, then Hermione would've won the Felix Felicis, and I'm sure she'd be fine with lending Harry some to get the memory. Like you said, with Harry's intrigue of the textbook, Ron probably would just give it to him anyways.

Slughorn himself said that only one student ever won that price, so it is clear that it is only given to someone who brews it perfectly, not to the one who is the best

I think the twins would be ok with meeting their future selves. Non twins would I think would feel weird about it.

if they were planning this all along all they had to do is make sure that they (or at least one of them) are not around ludo the first time he is taking bets, go watch the game quietly so that they are not the center of attention for once and when the game is finished immediately slip somewhere unseen and travel back in time. then they go to ludo (only the one not present in case they had the other one trail ludo to know where he will have been in the past) and make the bet. the future twins then go ahead and spend the rest of the day in hiding only to be exactly where they used the timeturner to travel back and "be in normal time again". them returning can be the exact moment where they are described in the story again and their smug grin is because they just spent the entire day knowing that they will win the bet.

If this theory is correct and making the assumption you cannot go forward, Fred and George slip away from the main cast and catch the game somewhere else or miss it entirely and wait for the result. Then they go back in time, and it's future Fred and George with the main cast, making the bet, and watching the game. This is why they're unnaturally quiet. When you already know the outcome, it's hard to get excited.

​@@riffbwexcept I don't think they were unnaturally quiet. If one was using a means to go back in time to do something shady, they'd have to know to fake things as well. Since Fred and George are known for being loud, somebody would've noticed if they weren't being their usual selves and would've called them out in it; most likely Arthur or Ginny as they are most observant.

Fred and George are excellent at Transfiguration, I wouldn't put it past them making an exact duplicate from something and it's that that Percy unwittingly returns (he wouldn't know anyone else should know about it and the Ministry has him noted as verified trustworthy to be responsible). I don't see them testing all equipment being returned (they've not exactly got a great track record or efficiency or security).

Of course the time turners don’t belong to the students, they were just loaned to them temporarily. And Fred & George weren’t planning to keep the time turner forever, just to use it once and then put it back before anyone ever noticed

​@@SF64I have something better. The twins didn't transfigure anything. They used the same duplication spell that Hermione uses to duplicate the locket around Umbridge's neck in Deathly Hallows. However, the only problem with this whole theory is, how did they put the time turner back? Because as tempting as it might have been, Fred and George didn't keep the time turner, because that opens up a whole can of plot holes for the next 3 books. Including Fred seeing his death.

Sounds great, except she sleeps in a room with a bunch of other students that aren't supposed to know about the time turner (and she isn't supposed to let her past self see her, so it isn't like she could crawl into bed with herself, even if the others wouldn't notice). So, she would have to sleep in some random hiding place and just hope nobody found her. It's probably more of a difficulty than it's worth.

@Casey Campbell I think that's specifically for if your past self wouldn't understand what was happening. If you planned to meet you future self at a certain time, for example, I don't think it would cause any problems to your mind

@@caseycampbell4787 the entire thing si also possible with no direct interaction as well: you know you (future) are going to deposit a message under this brick at 5pm so you go there at 17:05 to pick it up and immediately timeturner again to another preknown point in time at the same stone. repeating this as far back as you want. all the most future you has to do is remember to place the message. the laborious part is the one for the most past you because it has to do this for every hop of the message

That would definitely explain why despite how poor they were the kids still had broom sticks and a makeshift quidditch pitch in their yard. That way the only thing they could do for fun was practice quidditch the moment they learn how to fly and they'd be practicing with crappy equipment. Like, if they can become great players with their crappy equipment imagine how well they'll do when they use proper equipment. 😂

Ginny is an excellent seaker and chaser. It is clear most if not all the family is very enthusiastic about Quidditch, it wouldn't be beyond Fred and George to have looked into the comparative skills and mentally of all the participating players and determined there's a good chance Ireland are unlikely to be beaten on scoring but that Victor would rather end the game before they got so far ahead that Bulgaria would lose by an embarrassing amount. They have the attitude of go big or go home and knew even if they lost they'd be competent enough to earn back their loses with some hard work (they might not test well but they're clearly driven to achieve goals they care about)

Yeah, it's odd to me that Bagman laughed the bet off as silly and gave them such high odds. Every character seemed to acknowledge that Bulgaria had the best seeker in the world, but everything else was in favour of Ireland. "Krum's one good player. Ireland's got seven."

It's the issue of Krum grabbing the snitch when there was a 160 point difference losing Bulgaria the game by only 10 points, literally 1 goal. It's very unlikely that his team would allow that to happen with such a small gap that they need to make up. Unless Krum just had high hopes that while he's chasing the snitch his team would make 2 more goals. Honestly I have no idea though. Since it doesn't really say how quickly Ireland was scoring, you'd think Krum would be able to grab the snitch before Ireland had a 160 point lead.

Good job, I think that works a little better. Still don't love time travel as a solution (maybe Divination works too?), but this one fits the book's rules and matches the characters

The only problem with that is the act of planning to time travel doesn't seem to initiate time travel, even if you have the time turner. Despite events happening in Prisoner as normal, Hermione had to be told to go back. Fred and George can't play the Time Game like Bill and Ted (of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure fame) can. Really, all Future Fred and/or Future George need to do is make the bet, then they can hang back while their present selves are watching. Present Fred and George are scrambling over to Bagman because they know the moment the game ended, regardless of the outcome, they made a good bet.

They had to be told to go back because the thought never occurred to them, not because they have to be told to go back to initiate the events happening... I'm really not sure where your logic comes from. The fact that before Harry and Hermione go back in time the events they would do back in time were already occurring shows definitively that even if the traveling occurs later on the events you do back in time already happen in the present, it doesn't matter how the time traveling was initiated later... I seriously do not get your logic because it simply doesn't line up with events. The rules of Time travel as defined in Harry potter lore are pretty simple. If you go back in time, the events which you do back in time have already occurred, if you are going to travel back in time sometime in the future, the events you do back in time will already be occurring in the present. It's as simple as that, end of statement. It's not the fact that going back in time limits what you can do based on what has already occurred, it's that your choices you make while in the past have always happened that way. Seriously explain how on earth Hermione and Harry being told to go back in time has literally anything to do with the events that took place while back in time or before. Nowhere did I suggest that planning to time travel initiates it. I meant that Fred and George would plan to come back to this point in time when they travel back later, the initiation of time travel occurs when they use the time turner later, but because they planned on doing so earlier they know they don't have to worry about running into themselves as they already made sure they'd be out of the way. This isn't particularly complicated and I don't get what anything you said has to do with it...

Nah, not too ludocrous. That is pretty much the same conclusion I arrived at with them using a time turner to go back in time.

I'm thinking Fred and George had prepared for the moment by making something that looked like the time turner. They weren't going to test it when they got it back. So, after Percy stopped needing it for classes, Fred and George made the switch, Percy turned in the fake, and no one knew the real one was missing.

I’d assume they put it back where Percy kept it after they used it. He wasn’t checking on its safety in the summer. Or he was but they put a fake one in its place for a while. Percy wouldn’t be using it in the summer so he wouldn’t know it’s fake.

To be honest considering most Ministry employees can't figure out to use a simple catch-all reversal spell like "finite incantartum" to stop a rain spell and can't produce even a basic protection spell to literally save their lives. I really don't think they'd be that attentive of equipment checks especially when there's paperwork verifying the lendee as being reliable and trustworthy.

My thought is that they used it once, then put it back when they got home so its disappearance wouldn’t be noticed. Or alternatively, as I saw another commenter saying, they could have transfigured an object to look like a time turner and just Indian Jonesed it, in which case Percy would have turned a fake time turner back in. Personally, I like the former theory better, because Percy being an accomplished wizard himself, would have likely realized it was fake, but it is possible

I'm pretty sure that the rules didn't change. Because Harry and Cedric were tied for first and they both grabbed the cup at the same time. Thus they both won, but since Cedric gets killed, Harry wins. That's why he was ready to throw his winnings into the lake before giving them to Fred and George, because he knows the only reason he won was because his classmate died. Knowing Harry he would have given the win to Cedric despite them being tied. Since he was never supposed to compete to begin with. Granted it's been a while since I read the book so I don't remember if Dumbledore said that "whoever gets it wins the tournament." specifically.

Dumbledore says, whoever touches the cup first will get maximum points. Not sure how the other contestants would be scored, but in the case of Harry and Cedric, it would mean a certain victory. As it did.

It apparently states in their terms and conditions unless you opt out, they can record your sessions and sell your information (Name, age, address, phone number, IP, that sort of stuff, not medical or mental health info)to marketers. Recording the sessions is a red flag. I've heard of some IRL therapists doing it, but it seems like a terrible idea because it can so easily lead to HIPPA violations and breaches of Doctor/Patient privilege. As for selling the data... Sorry, but you're using a google a product right now. They are already selling all of your data and have everything your therapist does and more. the average person gave up their privacy ten years ago when they started posting everything about themselves online. Don't get me wrong, its evil that they're selling people's info, because the marketers know that the info is for people seeking mental health services. They likely turn around and sell that to drug manufacturers who know who target with adds for their latest anti-depressant or whatever. Its just the fact that, well, this isn't new or unusual. Its a fact of life in the digital age. None of this should surprise anyone. None of it should be shocking. This is life on the internet. TO anyone reading this seeking counseling. you have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy and empathy. I've been there. To find resources in your area, including reputable therapists, group therapy, etc, contact NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness). They also offer family classes to teach family how to better help their loved ones that suffer from mental illness. Don't be discouraged from seeking help. Its the bravest act you can take, if you can't do in person sessions, many places now offer tele-med services.

This is super easy, just leave to go to the bathroom or something, go lay low until the match is done. Find out the result. Go back in time, come back from the bathroom. They don’t need to watch the match the first time, should be pretty obvious who won judging from the crowd , or just ask someone. Or read it in the news. Whatever. (This is assuming that they would have to stamp their ticket or something to get in).

Which is likely a reason why they are heavily regulated by the MoM. Only top tier students are allowed to have one, AND probably sign off something (declaration of honor) to say that they only use it in school work. Problem is that if this is true, Hermione has better methods to ensure compliance than the MoM which is hilarious. (the whole curse on the DA parchment)

While I haven't been to many stadiums, most football (or soccer) stadiums I've been passed have multiple ticket gates. They could have just used a different one.
