Eric... I always start off my warm up at the range only hitting with my back arm / hand( right|). II tuck my left hand in my back waist band and hit 50-75% swings right hand only. I found it worked really well to hit good clean strikes and \I know that translates to better shots while playing.. Now I know why thanks to your video. The right wrist bend backwards allows you to practice keeping your hands forward off the ball on contact. It does take time to learn to hit one handed but it is worth the time. My wife also started this one hand hitting and she thinks it pretty cool when other golfers ||( especially guys ) start looking at her when she is sailing these beautiful high shots one handed.

At the end of my range session I created a takeaway with both arms and quiet wrists. The waggle of Ben Hogans was a wrists action. I think his actual takeaway had very quiet wrists. Some pros I noticed create a waggle that has quiet wrists. Their club is taken back about three to four feet about twice before the actual swing. To have quiet wrists during the waggle the right elbow has to move backwards, close to the right side. Any premature movement in the wrists inspires premature focus of strength within the wrists. Weight has to roll towards the outside of the left foot in the follow through and during impact. But we need to use the inside muscles of the legs in the golf swing. So during impact and with the follow through there has to be concern for the outside of the left leg.

I personally think this is the biggest misconception in golf. How the wrists work. Everyone i know does this wrong because it feels powerful to hinge up. But then the face is open severly compromised esp w a stronger grip and from there u are doomed. I shoot in the low 70s consistently and i still struggle w this at times yers of bad habits. But the way you explain it is awesome. Keep doing what you do 👍

I may be wrong; but, I think at the top of a good downswing if the wrist are unlocked the head of the club will have the opportunity to repel against the hands thus lagging behind the hands naturally to the moment of impact as long as the speed of the hands swinging the club is about one forth of the speed the club head traveling around it’s slanted circular path. Important part of the swing to keep the face square, the dynamic loft low and shaft lean!
@555Trout
@555Trout 3 года назад
Burying another incredibly entrenched myth of vertical wrist cocking regarding shaft lean and "delayed release"! Love it. Something I think is helpful to students is a clockwise rt forearm rotation intention . If you study radial cocking the right wrist will rotate counterclockwise doing it The twisting clockwise both removes the radial and gets us into full right wrist extension. Imo this is highly non intuitive to players as they want so badly to square the clubface they frequently twist counterclockwise . Exactly what we don't want. Of course this is why opening the clubface going back is so catastrophic. I loved the "closed to the shaft " demonstration at take away. The clockwise twist intention is imo the essential intention , though not the only intention, for "shallowing". One's pivot, and body tilts have to keep pressure , acceleration, on the handle to reach impact with shaft lean also. "Opposing forces" if you will. And I don't think "holding" the angles is the best way. I think the best way is to try and "flip" the hell out of it but the pivot pressures are so strong the "flip" can't happen. The opposing forces creating the look of "holding" but actually the intention being to "flip" the hell out of it. It's a subtle point I'm trying to make here and I hope I was able to convey it properly. "Delay" is a biproduct of opposing forces and not an intention.

If you swing the club properly you don't need to think about wrist angles. The swing of the golf club does it for you.

When you say clockwise rotation of right forearm are you talking about the slight “twist away” motion in the backswing and do you feel any pressing down of either heel pad to help hinge the club?
@555Trout
@555Trout 3 года назад
@@stevebaer2282 Clockwise rotation on downswing. Counterclockwise on takeaway. Focusing on left hand heel pressure promotes radial(vertical hinging). Not a good idea. Like Eric says, there is a little vertical but mostly extension/flexion. Golfers typically open tbe face back and close it on the downswing. No good. I differ a little here with Eric btw. We shouldn't need a face closure intent 8n downswing if we loaded correctly. Opening then closing is doable, and some greats have done it, but the disasterous hard left miss is always in play then. So I favor the opposite . And this is what we see now in the dominant players. A great example to study would be Morikowa or Dustin. Especially Morikawa. He's gonna beat the world . It's also possible to just stay square the entire motion but I don't favor that because then there's a two way miss in the equation. And that's just so limiting for tactical aiming because you can't eliminate a side of the course if you know what I mean. Rather than a default slight cut. You want to build in a miss bias and not ride the knife edge of a two way miss. So think of how your hand loads throwing. Counterclockwise back and clockwise through. I suspect I might have blown your mind here because your assumption was opposite of what I said. I've seen it a thousand times with students over the years. You just jumped ahead of the class if so.

At set up we already have some wrist hinge … also when wrist hinge it goes at around 45 degrees the turn creates the swing path of club .. ?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
Yes, most players will sit at about 150°ish, so they've got about 30° of preset hinge relative to 180° at setup. A good checkpoint is having the butt of club pointing right into the belt line at your address position. As you start your backswing, your hands and arms must move in three dimensions...backward, inward, and upward. The backward and inward come primarily from the turning torso. All of the extension pieces + the spine tilt to the lead side + the wrists hinging upward + the trail elbow bending supply the major portion of the upward movement. Hope this helps!

I came back to this video due to sore wrists. I'm 72 years old and practice a lot, especially wedges. I've been suffering from a sore right wrist, mainly the target side of the wrist. Although I'm right-handed, I play golf left-handed. I employ a stronger lead hand grip. Would weakening my lead wrist slightly more toward a neutral grip help alleviate the stress on that wrist? I hit draws with most all clubs. My bad shots are pull hooks. 54-degree wedges travel 75 - 80 yards. Thanks!

@guitar1950 Год назад
@@CogornoGolf I'm back here again! I made a recent change in how my wrists work through impact. I found that I tend to resist letting my lead wrist go into ulnar deviation at and through impact. I believe this not only caused me to experience wrist pain but also more shots tend to be towards the heel of the club face and occasional shanks with wedges. I'm of the opinion that the club shaft should align with the forearm at impact and the butt of the club should point under the lead forearm towards the arm pit and not down or towards the hip. My wrist pain disappeared immediately after making this change. I've hit over 100 balls and no issues. I'm also getting more speed through the ball.

I tried this today it is MONEY. The ball was going further, straighter and lower AND it was making a different sound. That unmistakable sound of compression i.e. the ball getting crushed. The hard thing though is sometimes I cup the left wrist or don't hinge at all leading to thin or even topped shots. So I need to get consistent with this hinging action.

The best way I've found to show golfers that this is the correct way to bend their Right Wrist is to demonstrate how to throw a ball & what the Right wrist does naturally. Since almost everyone can throw a ball, they know instinctively that this is correct, yet 98% of high handicap golfers do the exact opposite, with their Right Wrist, in a golf swing. I've concluded that the brain does this because it puts the part of the brain that controls the Left Hand in control - removing the Right Hand's ability to do what it naturally wants to do. Often a very quick fix for this is to have the person hit some balls with their Right Hand ONLY on the club and have them watch their Right Wrist to get it back in control from the brain's perspective - and then have them slowly put their Left Hand back on the club, every few shots, until their Right Wrist now does the opposite what it use to do - i.e. bends back at the top of the swing, instead of collapsing into flexion as the left wrist cups as the brain searches for a way for the Left side of the body to generate power - instead of putting the Right hand & wrist into a naturally powerful throwing position.

Why not set up with forward lean and swing back from there maintaining the wrist position?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Hard to lean shaft too far forward without opening shoulders and having upper body too forward (not enough tilt) This leads to other issues---usually lack of backswing turn and depth. Hands inside left thigh good marker where you have shaft leaned forward but still can have tilt and shoulders square. Handle also more forward at impact due to shift forward and arms working off body

@vidvivvid 3 года назад
@@CogornoGolf sometimes I’ve practised this move by starting with the club back from the ball a few inches whilst body square to ball. Sort of reversing back from impact position. Can actually hit it well swinging back from here but it looks a bit weird to use out on the course.

Eric - thanks for all the great videos. I was doing this last season and was told that by flexing my risk back that I wasn't keeping my club in front of my body(almost taking it inside). I watched your twist video, and it resonated with me, and I find that by twisting it gentally flattens out my left wrist by the time I reach the top of my swing. That said I can't both twist and bend my wrist back (or I can but it puts my club at an odd angle up to the top). Should I be twisting and flexing back ? :) Thanks!
