I spent $2000 to go to conman, Martin Chuck's, four day golf school and I did not get information this solid. He promised he'd give us a lecture about the 10 non-negotiable principals of the golf swing, but he never did. He promised us he'd give us trackman sessions, but he never did. He had "Goofy" a high school golfer watch & video us and play golf with us. "Goofy" seldom landed his drives in the fairway and sometimes missed greens with his wedge. What a "Michael Edwards! You, with your, "Home Depot" aim stick video and this right hand bent back/left hand bowed video did more for free than "Goofy" and Chuck, "The Ali Dia of Golf", was there but only gave me one tip: "Tee the ball back in your stance.", one critique: "You came here with a slice; now, you are hooking the ball.", & one compliment: "Your turn is pretty good." Chuck didn't even know that I came to the school with a pull or a pull hook. What a Jordan Belfort!

Quite brilliant. Been playing for 35 years and never had this explained in such easy and informative detail. I've known about the left wrist bowed but always struggled to keep it there in the backswing let alone the downswing so played with a fade all my life. I play off 5 so doing most things right, but this has opened my eyes totally. Particularly the bit where you say 'if you don't like the feel of bowing your left wrist, move the the right wrist' obvious stuff of course but it simply never occurred to me!! I always felt awkward bowing the left so kinda gave up on it & compensated with a very strong grip and very closed stance to bat it down the line!! Tks for this man, really appreciate it. Russell, a brit.

Eric, I must have watched a thousand golf videos in the past years, but never have I seen any which explained the effect of the wrist angle in the downswing this clearly. With your position comparisons I can see how and why I can never make it to impact with the vertical shaft position. I finally understand how important it is not to cup my wrist and the seriousness of the chain reaction which ensues. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. At 8:36 I can clearly see that there is no way I can make successful contact unless I work on that wrist. Thank you so very much.

I've been playing golf for 2 years now. Driver is generally 'ok' for me, but my irons have been horrific. I have spent a massive amount of time watching youtube, going to the range, and some private instruction. Still wildly inconsistent with my irons, and a terrible short-hitter on top of that. Until I discovered this video and went down the bowed-wrist hole. Now I hit most irons accurately and have added about 30 yards to all my clubs. Thank you Eric!!

I've watched quite a few golf coaches on RU-vid and I think you are the best. A lot of teachers do a decent job of connecting the movements to the ball flight. You add the extra step of connecting the movements to the club face, swing plane, etc., and connecting that to the ball flight. That really seems to be the missing ingredient that makes your content so much better than everything else that's out there.

Keep the left wrist cupped in the backswing. Start to bow the left wrist in transition in the downswing. As the downswing progresses get that Howe left wrist pointing more toward the ground. It’s a weird feeling at first and takes a lot of repetition. Greet feeling when you get it going. Ball flies strait with penetration!
@CogornoGolf

Thats certainly one way Simon! Some do that, some more flat on way back, some more flexed. Not all, but most certainly MOVE TOWARD flexion to start down like you mentioned minus a few anomalies Depends a bunch on grip type

Eric: Thanks for all of your videos. I appreciate all the tips and how you try to simplify things and not make anything one size fits all. A few weeks ago I had the worst case of the shanks that I have ever had. I was very frustrated not being able to get back my swing for weeks, but looking back it was probably the best that could have happened to me as it forced me to really evaluate my swing. Up until this point my swing was good enough to show up to the course make contact and keep the ball somewhat in play with once in a while hitting a lucky shot. I was happy, because it was at least good enough to play in the low 90s but I knew that I didn't have consistent swing technique. After my swing broke down I started watching videos on RU-vid trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I watched your video with the two drills to help overcome the Shanks first. This got me back to making some contact and it got me focused on creating a good takeaway. Even though I was starting to make some contact, I still was very inconsistent and felt lost when doing full swing. I started watching more of your videos including this one on the wrist angles and discovered that even after doing a straight takeaway and trying to reenter in a straighter path that I was cupping my wrist on the top of my back swing and coming down very open. Bowing my left wrist and experimenting with this made all of the difference! I played last weekend and had one of my best rounds and I feel like I finally found a set up and a swing that I can use with all of my clubs. For me focusing on initially have a straight and low takeaway and beginning to bow my wrist early in the takeaway and maintaining the bowing sensation all through out has helped me create consistency I have never had in my life. I don't feel intimidated by different types of clubs anymore as I just focus on being consistent with my set up, takeaway, wrist angles, and remaining committed to coming down with the wrist angle bowed. Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to really thank you!

This truly is a game changer. Started to do this a couple months back and completely change my game. I started to bow immediately on when I start my backswing because I could never get the timing right any other way. Went from a slicer who shot low 100 to in the high 80’s. Feels weird at first but once you get it, it’s money. Golf is so much fun now. Also improved distance immediately. Eric, the one thing that is odd is I do this with every single club in the bag but driver. For some reason I couldn’t get the same consistency with driver doing this but for whatever reason I can not hit my driver so much better. Not sure why that is since I don’t bow my wrist with that club. Maybe I subconsciously cup my right wrist more as habit,not really sure. Great Video!!

Thank you for honest teaching! The funny thing with golf is there is no magic fix for everyone. You find a technique that offers additional control, and adjust it to fit you. Many teachers would just say "bow the lead wrist". You show it is much more nuanced than that.

For the first time I took 1 of these videos to heart and put it into action on the driving range, I didn't perfect it because 1 range session isn't going to fix everything... but I did hit some AMAZING shots that went straight or left. and ill add my shots have NEVER went left. Im trying to bow the wrist at setup but the backswing feels weird, and its hard for me to time bowing the wrist at the top. trying to find a happy medium but im impressed so far.

I’ve developed a weird habit of cupping my wrist in the backswing and then bowing my wrist on the downswing. Weirdly enough it has been working for me and when I try to change it, it really messes me up. This video helps me understand that there’s nothing wrong with my swing, I just need to make sure that the matchup is correct at impact.

100%....good point....nothing wrong with that....in fact many pros SLIGHTLY cupped at top of backswing then moving toward flat (flexion) in transition perfect OK Especially if your grip is stronger then some cup OK....face will still be square enough

This is huge and something I struggle with a ton. Why do I remember teachers, maybe in the 90’s, having you raise the club head straight up from address, almost definitely cupping your wrists, and then taking it up to the top of the backswing? Hey Steven! Yeah you would have a few options here 1. Weaken Grip 2. Add a touch of extension to lead wrist 3. Less extension of trail wrist 4. Less arm rotation (supination/pronation) 5. Push handle more forward...more (passive) release, et

Eric, Wonderful video … I’ll be working on how much lead wrist bow is required to stop slicing my driver and long metals. I especially like your advice to try using wrist bow at address and attempting to maintain it through the entire back-swing and down-swing … a great starting point. My guess is most wrist bow is required for driver, moderate wrist bow for long metals, and little / no wrist bow for mid irons and below.

Hey Carsten! Thats a great start! Exactly what you want. How to not go left next? -Get more shaft lean (handle more forward) with less active release pattern. If you used to open the door 40* in the backswing you needed to close it 40* in the downswing. Now you are only opening it 20* during backswing but still closing it 40* on the way down (too much) Close it less on way down. How? -More shaft lean, less arm rotation.

Eric this is pure Gold. I've been working on this for a while. 2 questions when I practice this I get an inside takeaway. And why not set up with more forward shaft lean . A more bowed wrist. ? Thanks
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Hey! 1. Takeaway....so you are overdoing one or more of the elements (forearm rotation, wrist bow, shoulder rotation, etc) Takeaway specifics: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1B-3OuGTcsM.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uoz5jvrsTMA.html 2. You can set up with more forward shaft lean if you want. Hands inside left thigh would be stock. Great players have more and less its just a stock option. You just have to then work the movements in different degrees and amounts based on where you start (thats a longer more complicated conversation)

This is some great content. Can’t seem to do it but I get the concept. As hard as I try bowing my left wrist it seems without fail I just can’t seem to get the desired shaft lean at impact. Now and then I can get a bit of forward shaft lean but the club still flips about 3 to 5 inches after impact. I can feel the compression and can see the resulting beautiful ball flight I just can’t do it consistently. Golf is hard.

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Год назад
Hey Tony! Flattening/bowing your lead wrist already at setup would require your hands to be very far forward...and most times it's best to keep our setup pieces a bit more neutral to make things easier on us! Hands just inside the lead thigh at setup with a slight amount of extension/cup in the lead wrist (with a neutral to strong grip) is a great place to start. It does make for a great impact drill though! Check out this video for that👍 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-19EMUjHK08Q.html Also, here is a good one on key setup and backswing checkpoints you may enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8TjvCHCAQ0c.html

This is great advice but doesn’t touch on a third variable that many beginner’s swings, including mine when I started, suffer from which is pronation of the lead hand caused by forearm rotation; i.e., allowing the lead hand to turn palm down. I retooled my swing with Hogan’s Five Lessons and the technique he used was to extend the front wrist in the takeaway to keep the club head outside the hands and help him bring the shaft parallel with heels at the top. Then in the down swing he would change his lead wrist from cupped to bowed and supinate the lead hand (palm upwards) and also ulnar deviate with trail hand pronating and extending in a way that freezes the movement of the hands leading to much more solid impact and better ball compression. From a book by his practice caddy Jody Vasquez I learned that changing of the wrists with cupping in the backswing was due to mobility issues after his 1948 near fatal crash. Without the cupping of the lead wrist at the top his club was too laid off. When I tried to duplicate that wrist change technique my club shaft would wind up way past parallel because I had a normal range movement in my legs and hips. My takeaway from that experience was to first understand the goal of where the club head, face and shaft should ideally be at each point of the swing to swing in balance and deliver the face square to target for a straight shot not at impact but at the point the compressed ball releases off the face and then find the grip and wrist action that will guide them there. Hogan’s wrist action was a his compensation to get the shaft parallel and club head in the ideal place in space to pull it back down on a well balanced path.

best explanation ever about wrist mechanism in golf swing! i'm more now conscious with my wrist during my swing but however it's pretty difficult to maintain the bow of left wrist during impact. would strength training targeted at wrist help this problem?

When I started playing again after a long layoff, I was leaving the club face open. A bowed wrist helped with that. Sure hasn't hurt Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas haven't a bowed left wrist at the top of the swing. Nice video, thanks.

At 6:55 you were correct. They take their 8 (the pro's) and make it like our 6. e.g. they de-loft the 8 to be like a 6 at dynamic impact. Why did you say they take a 6 and make it an 8? LOL. REALLY good visuals here and excellent explanation regardless....I get what it means to deloft a club and why I pop up my irons now. Gold! Thank you Eric.

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 11 месяцев назад
100% yes If face too open at top you either need to improve the wrist angles (bow lead wrist or bend back trail wrist) OR strengthen grip Its normal that it should feel CRAZY in the beginning just to get it to chance a little. I started doing this naturally with my irons and wedges. It is the #1 key and I feel like its a cheat code to not hitting the ball fat when swinging in to out, it increases your radius going into the ball. Its all woks wonders in chipping presetting just a bit to have ball first contact. However this has screwed up my driver swing, what is your thoughts with the driver? I would like to see a video on the differences on bowing of the wrists w/ the driver vs irons and the different adjustments you need to make to have it work doing it w/ the driver
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Thanks for the message and questions, James. Inherently not much different. Depends on speed. Some differences on the TIMING of the throw (flexion toward extension with driver) can be a bit MORE and SOONEr.....especially if you have lower dynamic loft and less speed . In terms of setup, backswing and early transition...about the same (the things you can control)

This is great. I notice such better ball striking when I consciously think about my wrists. The area I might have missed was the hinging aspect. Does the hinge naturally happen when you have the wrist bowed or bent?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Appreciate it! Yeah...does it naturally happen is a tough one to answer. When you do the bow record it....did it happen by itself without thinking hinge? Then yes. IF not you need to consciously add it.

Thanks, Charles! As mentioned in video you can do either....or any time in the takeaway. I would generally prefer someone to do it from the takeaway to the top in terms of the timing. But some do it earlier and others later ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GhWNFaCqss8.html

This might be the most important piece of advice for every golfer. No mid- to high handicapper is doing this 100% correctly. BUT: In my opinion one extra element should have been mentioned in this video: This wrist-position is useless if the player does not rotate the body properly at the same time the wrists come in to position in the downswing. If the arms and wrists overtake the swing because the mind is on the wrists, the body stagnates, and there will be flipping, etc. So the wrist-move has to be COMBINED with the body move. I think that is often overlooked.

Can you do a breakdown of Gary Woodlands swing? Love the whip effect he has and would like to see your take on that move.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Thanks, Bryan! Appreciate the kind words and support! I can....good idea, he's a cool example of exaggerating loading the shaft in transition through lots of radial deviation (hinge) of wrists.....much more than most. Thats why he struggles with distance control with shorter clubs imo....too narrow of a low point and hard to manage dynamic loft from there. Compared to like a Steve Stricker who has a wide low point (flat spot) and can manage the loft and distance better. Woodland style better for speed tho.
@bryanlina4724
@bryanlina4724 3 года назад

I think the reason why this is so hard for any of us to grasp is because when we do it this way there’s no speed in it or we don’t know how to do it effectively at speed and feel the club release way out in front of the ball it’s like we have to move our bodies faster to hit the ball farther and where does the release happen obviously happens wait like 3 feet after the ball but how do you do that efficiently to have enough speed to send it far
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Hey! "it’s like we have to move our bodies faster to hit the ball farther " -Thats exactly what it should feel like if you normally use your hands in correctly/too much.... For me to answer the last parts specifically I would need to see your swing and see where your errors are to show you. There are lots of possible combinations of movements that I cant give a blanket answer there

Great video and explanation, I like the trail wrist feels. Question about the downswing and trail wrist, do you have to feel the trail wrist flexing at any point in the downswing, assuming if you are pivoting correctly, it would never actually get into flexion until after the ball is gone? My fear is that holding that trail wrist bent back would also create some issues if you don't counter the speed of the downswing. Thanks again!
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 года назад
Thats correct, Matthew. the reality is that going from extension to flexion needs to be HAPPENING during late downswing but not FULLY HAPPEN until past impact. thats easy to see with any slow mo face on video of any good swing you like now you ask about FEEL and of course there will be no universal FEEL because that depends on where you are coming from here is more on this specific topic of timing of extension to flexion ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nwz6Yrr9SrI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bnNsbWgUjFw.html
