These kids knew they needed help and they asked for it. In 2018, Emmy McCardell’s quick thinking saved her from a stranger who approached while she was sunbathing. In November, a Pennsylvania boy sensed danger and went into a local business for help. And a Nebraska child who got lost after school approached his friend’s home desperate for assistance. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

I picked her up after school everyday but was late by five minutes because of the weather. They went to a sitter in the morning so she didn’t know her way back to the sisters house and the sitters daughter didn’t go to school that day. When I got to the school and was told the teacher made my daughter leave I went to find her. She was about a block away at a stop sign crying because she didn’t know where to go. It beside my heart. I called the Principal the next day and he had no compassion, was told I should have made it in time. She could have been taken. 🤬 As the parents we should have taught her the way to the sisters house.

We let her, she didn’t talk much about the school when she got older so we didn’t realize she hated it. Because our town is so small the teachers have their favorites, most have kids of course. The bus driver story reminds me of two different situations I've had with taxi drivers. When I was around 13, I had to get taxis home from school due to the awkward location and the tiny size of the school. So one day the taxi broke down on an A-road and instead of calling for a backup car or even just letting me call my mum, he told me to get out on the side of the busy carriageway with no footpath. A few miles away from home. What's worse, he'd just picked me up from a school specifically for kids with "special needs", and I told him I'm autistic and had no clue how to get home safely, but he just left. It took me over two hours to find my way home, wandering along the side of the carriageway. The second time, I was 16 and being picked up at midnight since I didn't want to stay for a sleepover (dangerous and dumb, I know) and my friend had already locked the door behind me and told me not to knock again because her parents would be really mad if I woke them. So I get into this taxi, tell him the address, and he suddenly glares at me. Apparently someone from my apartment building had previously ran out without paying, so he decides to refuse me service, yelling to "get out of his f***ing car." I was crying by then and tried to explain that my mum was waiting at our front door to pay, I had no way to go back inside to my friend and I just wanted to go home, but he was so angry. I ended up calling my mum from the side of the road, sobbing because I was terrified and the area itself was really sketchy. Almost zero streetlights or security cameras, just huge trees and looming walls that could hide potential attackers. Luckily she booked me another taxi that showed up fast and the second driver was really kind and understanding (he had an autistic granddaughter) so he got me home safe. I couldn't imagine leaving a vulnerable person, let alone a child, alone in an unfamiliar place due to impatience or anger.

Very scary for the kids. When my daughter was in 2nd grade her class stayed a little late after school to practice for a program they were going to be putting on so parents had to come pick them up as the school buses would be long gone. I don't remember what happened but I was late, only by 5 minutes but apparently the only parent that was late because my daughter was the only one that sat down near the entrance and the office to wait for me. The lady in the front office told her she needed to leave and if she had missed the bus then she better start walking home. 😡 Before anything could happen I pulled up and got my daughter. On the way home she starts telling me what happened. You better believe I set that lady straight on never telling my kid to walk home again. She didn't even know how to get home at that age as it was too far!

I can relate to the kid who was left at the wrong stop. When I was in Pre-K I had to take a bus to school. I was only 3 or 4 so I had no idea what my bus number was and got on the wrong bus. When all the stops were completed the bus driver kicked me off at the last stop and left me on a gravel road near a highway. Lost alone and frightened I wandered around for about an hour when two nice ladies found me and tried to help me get home. A hard thing when all I knew about where I lived was it was a blue green house with a basit hound. Thankfully my dad was friends with the PD where I lived and when the cops came to get me the officer told me he'd take me home as my dad and mom were worried. I don't know what happened to the bus driver. But I was told she wasn't working there after that. I'm glad the kid managed to find someone he knew to help as it took me almost 4 hours to get home after my mom realized that I wasn't on the bus I was supposed to be on. No one deserves to go through that. Especially not a kid so young.

my parent’s code word is tricky. if we’re out in public with my little sister and my mom see’s someone suspicious, she’ll find a sentence to say the word “tricky” in. like “oh, (sister’s name) come here, this looks tricky to draw.” or “do you think you could make that tricky thing?” and immediately we’ll go beside her lol. we also have a code word that every family member and friend knows, so if someone comes up to us and says “your parent’s wanted me to come pick you up. im their friend.” we say “what’s the code word?” and if they dont answer it, we get help.

He's mom finally realized I was following her and she was LIVID at me for calling the cops. She said "does it look like my 9yr old knows about tic tok!?". The boy swore he wasn't making that signal. She told me her son was just "waving". Me and my mom both showed the cops what he was doing. Cops had never heard of that signal before. Bet they looked it up when I left. I was so upset because of the mom's reaction to me. But I couldn't NOT call and it really be an emergency. If something would have happened to that child and I didn't call, I'd never forgave myself.

this reminds me of a similar situation i went through when i was younger than him. i was 5 years old and we had just moved to a new house. mom drove me to school one day, for me to find out it was a half a day and they told NO BODY. so they send all the kids home, i was the smallest and the only one going in the direction i was going, everyone else had groups but i was alone. so i ask can i go in so i can call my mom then ill leave the grounds. they completely refused to let me call my mom. even standing guard at the entrance so i couldn't walk in. so left with no choice i just started walking. i had no idea where i was nor how to get home. i walked past abandoned houses with large aggressive dogs, past cars who tried to "give me a ride to get candy" keep in mind it was a uniform school so i had to wear skirts, and skirts were super short on me cause of my below average short height. somehow by the love of mother nature i made it home, i knocked on the door to have my mom ask who is it for me to respond with my name, which understandably so left my mom to pause in confusion. when she answered the door to see me as the doorstep, out of breath, face covered in tears....needless to say mom was livid. she went up to the school the next day(since the school way empty by time i got home) and told them "if my daughter didn't make it home...i will burn you all and this building to the ground!! you never have to worry about seeing this child EVER AGAIN" and she got the school closed down right after that. so yea i know exactly how he felt.
