Made a little simulation to see if I could figure out the necessary ratio of diameter to thickness to produce a fair 3 sided cylindrical die.
The magic number is 2.415 ... apparently.

2.415 is really close to √2 + 1 ≈ 2.4142 (and the reciprocal 0.414 ≈ √2 - 1), so maybe something there?

Any chance you can try a couple more simulation with the sizes Matt used (2 root 2 and root 3)? That will -- if you get the same results to what they got -- sorta, kinda, give you some confidence that your simulation matches their real dice throws.

I'm onto it. i think it has to do with the center of gravity being a certain angle from the edge.

A quick check and the angle of center of gravity to the circular edge is 22.5 degrees or pi/8 rads.

My first guess on this problem was phi+1 (took an average of the statistical results they got).

I think that removing any that are not flat is going to skew the data in favor of center over sides. Any chance you can run again removing chance of coin interfering with other coins.

I think this file is lost to history after I change the hard drive in my computer, but if I do it again I'll take that into account. If I remember correctly though, the amount that had inappropriate resting values at the end were very low in comparison to the amount that were definitively one way or the other.
