If you compare the prices in British Pound it's actually on level with Specialized. I don't think it's fair to compare prices in AUD between a small company without a worldwide sales network and one of the largest bike brands out there.

@@StacyODell That's still comparing apples to oranges. There's plenty of US based companies that might have competitive pricing there but for me in Europe I'll have to add thehigh shuipping costs and ca. 20% VAT.

After 2 years riding gravel bikes I figured out that the fastest and best gravel tire is simply the trusty standard Schwalbe Marathon 38mm to 42mm. Runs crazy fast on road and has enough grip for most gravel roads.

can you fit 2.2's in this frame Dave? lots of gravel frames can fit 50(2.0)'s today, not as many fit 2.2's, 2.0 tire selection is poor at the moment. the terra hardpack test slower than 2.2's with that inferior casing

I think 29x2.2(700x56) tires on i30mm rims at ~20psi for a 160 pound rider is where Gravel bikes should be. This set up will roll-faster while providing more comfort.
@jamesmedlow

A note about those Terra Hardpack 50mm tyres. They're not strictly 50mm, in my opinion. I ran them on 25mm internal 650b rims, the sidewall carcass is 50mm at it's widest point but the actual tread around the perimeter measures around 47mm. The result, if running at low pressures, the sidewall is in regular contact with the ground, either side of the 47mm tread.

Great in-depth content about Vielo‘s gravel bike and general carbon design and production of bikes. I fully agree with wider tires. It just feels right at rough terrain without being significantly slower. Kudos for being unbiased towards other brands and respecting other‘s efforts too. Vielo +1 😊

I switched back to my hardtail MTB after 1 year of riding my gravel bike (Diverge). I really enjoy the Diverge, but it really is more for smooth gravel along rivers and parks. The 80-100mm front suspension is really the game changer here for rough gravel and roots. Of course, lower tire pressure on a gravel bike is said to be equivalent, but... it isn't! It's making the bike far slower. My new project now is a monster gravel with 80mm Rockshox on the front and drop bars. That should be a real game changer. And mountainbikes are really cheap these days as everyone is selling them to buy a gravel bike.

Well... I run this tyre size on a 19lb racey 29er and don't have much problem keeping up with most roadbikerists on the road... so why not? Wide is not as slow as you'd think, with the right supple tyre at the right pressure... its the main lesson from the last decade of bike design.

I'm a little skeptical of the "bigger is better" tire trend for gravel racing; perhaps for adventure riding it is more intuitive. I was new to gravelI in 2023, so before deciding on how to spend a lot of money, I decided to experiment a bit. I started by fitting 2.2 Race Kings on an old cross country frame fitted with drop bars. On gravel trails/roads in my area, it was like riding on pillows, but the wheels felt way too heavy and overkill 90% of the time. This season I will be trying the 40c Challenge Strada Bianca tubeless tubulars. The wheels are half the weight. With no rim flanges or inner tubes, I can run super low CX pressures (< 20 psi) on the really rough stuff with no risk of air loss. Using sealant and plugs instead of an inner tube in a tubular is long overdue......

Lovely clean smart engineering that will surely catch on,with the bigger brands. I've got a Cannondale slate with fat tyres from 2017 it's more of a MTB than a gravel racer,I'm definitely in the camp, when it comes to riding wider tyres i can total see the benefits! I Don't think people should complicate the joy of riding in the countryside off road away from our towns and cities in comfort, whichever style of bike you choose.

I got the impression you were reviewing the tyres, rather than the frame, tbh. Gravel framesets have been able to accept 50mm tyres for years. This frame hasnt brought anything new to the scene in that respect. It sure does look stunning with the lines, the chainstay and seatstays look fantastic. Deep section rims with chonky tires look so damn good. Keep up the good content, DA.

One thing I don't (I like most of this frame, mind you) is the very wide top tube. This will rub my knees for sure. There is no need for that other than it's easier to line up with those widened seat stays.

And what if you just took a XC frame set, with option to use a suspended fork with 100mm of travel or a rigid fork, put a drop bar on it and call it a day? The one and only true do it all bike is a XC hardtail with 29" wheels. If you need 50mm or more to be comfy on your gravel bike, a MTB is going to be much better.

Why would someone need 45mm on a Gravel Bike? I cant imagine that 45mm on any sort of fastish pavement is fun or did tires evovle so much in the last decades? And a sporty trekking bike beats them all anyway in my opinion.

Wow! great stuff. I would buy a bike from that guy since he knows his sh*t -- I would go so far as to say he's expressed a "technical elegance", with the specific reasons for each design decision well articulated. I would love to ride that bike. As opposed to "yet another Giant TCR clone with fat tires". Yeah, I'm ignoring the cost for the moment but this is a big lift in design IMO. Minor nit..I can't tell if they've got fender/rack bosses on the other models -- Not sure I'd want to tour without those.

His little anecdote about the guy selling his Pinarello,Colnago and S-Works tells you who this type of overpriced gravel bikes is for, just my view but i don't see any value in this bike at £4000 for a frame when a lot of the bigger brand 's will sell you complete builds for that price. Anywho i'm off to fit some drop bar's to my mtb to get ready for the next big thing in cycling.

Because wide tires at low pressure = suspension. Every industry always circles back around and calls it something new. This is how we ended up with mountain bikes. Personally I will never understand running a ridged frame drop bar bike off of a paved surface. I just don’t get it. There is a better tool. Don’t seek your mounting bike just yet folks. This will morph back in to mountain bike.

@@wscharff 28-30 are road tires. Look at TDF. Most races are won on gravel on sub 45s, including Unbound and Big Sugar in 2023. I hear ya. MTB tires work on a few races. Has to be very dry and chunky. The pros are then running drop downs bars on a hard tail. You will get dropped fast on any other surface. Especially if there is lots of elevation.
