My favorite memories from dota come from when Luna's aura was changed to give % damage and armor instead of just flat damage and drows aura gave agility. My stack would pick drow, venge, luna, and 2 beefy frontliners like axe and sb. We would have 3 heroes hitting for 300+ damage at 15 minutes and just end the game. All of this was based around drow ranger as the centerpiece. What an absolutely incredible hero
Yo we run something similar to this instead of luna we played 1drow 2 visage 3enchantress 4pudge 5venge we try to get the crit creep and then push with all the creeps and auras in 15 mins
High effort quality videos like these are what the Dota community has been needing Love your videos. I think an episode on the history of the map would be really cool to see Loving these videos man! I would really love to see the story of the map and perhaps Ursa now that it has fallen out of meta, include the stalker set in the story for some extra juice! Peace!! Baumi, this series is making me want to pick up Dota again. Good stuff dude. couldn't put it any better. Great community.
Very good video! I would like to add that one of the things that made substantially worse with was her attack animation(same goes for bone fletcher but to a lesser extent) it may not seem like much but it really does affect her, especially in early game when low on attack speed, the arrows have a weird slow delay to come out as opposed to something like windranger that has one of the best attack animation in all of dota.

At one time Drow ranger's ultimate back in warcraft 3 dota used to give you a chance to one shot creeps when attacking them. eventually it changed to just giving the agility.
You missed the small period where drow was broken, the aura passively applied to range creeps across the map so drow could just jungle and stack agility items and creeps would push passively. This is before it became an active ability.
I spammed drow for that one patch where she one shot ancients and I gained like 2k mmr. All you had to do was get a blink dagger and kill both ancient spawns every minute and you would be a raid boss by 30 mins
hee funny 7years ago i use to watch a guy called baumi every night to fall asleep and now i click on a random video all those years later and here we are glad to see you do well
Kinda absurd that during the beta, even before TI1, drow and viper were considered oppressively OP because 50% slow meant people would die before reaching you, I think mask of madness didn't silence you back then, so people rushed mask of madness, went 3,1,1,1 in the skill build and just massacred everyone since people in solo queue doesn't play as a unit like in pro. People were complaining on steam and reddit constantly about how op 50% slow is, and in reality, the hero was trash lol.
If you were a Drow player during the 50% cooldown reduction talent era and wondered why DotABuff showed 1% of players taking the aura instead, I confess that that was me, because I didn't realize that it applied to items, not just silence. Whoops!
Haven't been into Dota for a few years, but when YT recommended one of the earlier vids I was kinda interested And what can I say? I'm here to stay and watch the upcoming vids as well :) (though I won't play Dota myself ^^) Too bad my favorite hero - Ancient Apparition - probably won't make it until 2025 😅
I think you're really glossing over the patch when Drow could oneshot ancient creeps. Back then there was two ancient camps, and much of the meta was about farming those two camps. With precision auras attack speed she often got procs, and was perhaps the fastest and consistent farmer. Regardless of her boring spells, she could be useful with items. People would even buy blink dagger to get to camps faster. There might've not been any major tournaments at that point, but she had a significant precense if I remember correctly.
I actually hate Dragon Lance when it was introduced. In my mind, 1900 gold for 14 Agi is negligible. The 140 range I didn't even consider. Why build that when you could rush pre-nerf Mask of Madness, Aquila, 4 Wraith Bands (this was the real shit, every time I'm about to die, I panic buy Wraith Bands. The scariest thing you could see in 7.88~ is Trax with Power Treads, Aquila, and 3 Wraith Bands), or Crystalys? You just need a good Slardar or a good stunner as teammate. I probably still hate it today. It's like Lays chips, 80% air for 1900 gold.
I played draw ranger for 4 years, 5k matches, %60 win rate. I stopped when mask of madness got a nerf. I have no good memories. She is not an agility carry. She is a bullet. A one shot kill or be killed.
In dota 1, we just level up stats and her passive and buy helm of dominator, some wraith bands and your good to go. You are tanky because you have stats, you have dmg and lifesteal so you can stand your ground, and eventually you build lothars, butterfly, buriza, satanic and other items. Never had issues of her dying as long as you dont get ganked. Good times..
This gave me flashbacks to midlane drow with threads, dominator and 4 wraithbands and she'd deal a lot of damage but still have enough stats to make her take more punishment hits. sometimes dudes would be ballsy enough to go for a rapier and would carry the entire match
There was no mmr so I oculd often murder people as carry oracle with a desolator when they didnt even realize that they where being attacked as oracle ult made you invisable even while attacking
Back in Dota 1 in Garena days she quickly became one of my favorite heroes. In the time when pubs were being dominated by Trolls Voids and Slarks she was a carry who really stood out with with her style of play. Her level 6 was insane despite how low that agi bonus seems nowadays. You could dominate mid game unlike with any other right click hero. She didnt suffer from unique attack modifier limitations on Q to the same extent as other heroes. You could build Desolator for example and all you had to do was Q a person once to apply slow and then normal hit to apply deso debuff. Then continue with Q because target has no armor. I remember Dominator being popular as well. Maelstrom for example was usable on all heroes with unique attack modifiers because it had higher priority on proc. Starting with Dota 2, I understand why she didnt work in pro play. She relied on flanking too much. She really was a ranger, you roam the jungle at night with bonus night vision and start hitting people before they realise whats going on. Thats hardly gonna work in organized Dota. Gust just silencing and not pushing people back meant she had absolutely no defense. She wasnt that bad despite what her winrate/pickrate suggests, its more that there were handful of heroes that were way too good and rendered 50% of heroes unplayable. Including Drow. You probably didnt know this, but the last nail in the coffin for Precision Aura was Visage Familiars and not the weakness of the spell. In 2019 it came around full circle and the strongest high rank pub combo was Drow Visage but not many people knew(or cared) as not many played Visage. What you said about attack speed being worse than damage is true in most cases, but for a solid few months she ended up having 88% att speed bonus on level 4 and that buff on Familiars meant that towers were falling in literally 5 seconds. Valve was tired of the spell having no middle ground, being bad but at the same time completely broken in a very certain draft. Bonus fun fact: that instakill on ult mechanic introduced in 7.20 was actually how Marksmanship used to work before 2008.
@@5chneemensch138 They literally gave her an instakill mechanic on creeps because she couldn't farm for shit because she had no farming spells and couldn't buy malestrom because orbs were still a thing. I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with the Gambler. And the reason she wasn't played in pro games was because of her inability to quickly clear camps/waves and farm efficiently to flash farm and obtain map control. It's not a coincidence that the same patch where they changed marksman to what it is today, they gave her multishot at the same time. If you watch top level players some of them go in depth of what makes heros viable as a carry, and most of the time it isn't the "style" of how a carry fights, but about how a carry can achieve it's timings while impacting the game state without needing to teamfight as much as possible in the first 15-20 minutes of the game.
@@JAFrk Your post has nothing to do with mine. Gambler had the instakill mechaic before Traxex. Literally nothing more was said by me. Stop projecting your insecurities on me.
I started playing with drow and dota 2 was my first moba. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was still winning almost everything when I got to pick drow. Love the hero.
Drow fluctuated from ranged creep to creep commander. From this video I understand that she was either a must pick/ban or a waste of space. Never inbetween. First she was a simple stat stick with lackluster stats and no utility. She evolved into a stat stick support with absurd stats that could turn her allies into carries and minions into a serious threat. Back to simple and lackluster stat stick. Finally becoming a mid-game farming monster, bane of both healers and late game armor.
Take out the nostagia glasses, precision strike wasnt a unique nor made the game complex. It kidnaped the game and was just a passive damage buff wich power was the global range.
I'm sad drowstrats are gone, and looking at latest changes, seems like Volvo are gonna be evading such directions in the game for forseeable future. Thanks for another great video Baumi, Tuzki, you are giving this community what we desperately need.
You can see why. One hero defining scores of matches by just being alive in-game, yet also doing its best to not actively participate as much as possible?
@@donbionicle I mean, looking at drowstrats from this angle, then, yeah, this definitely sucks. But from the point of "Drow was a carry, that allowed casters to do attack damage instead of her, while herself focusing not as much on damage, as mainly on controlling enemy, by actively drawing their attention", then, in my opinion, drowstrats were a concept was exploring. She was literally being a support, but a support in first position. If Valve stuck around with this concept and balanced the numbers, maybe made it an actual aura instead of global buff, so that Traxex's team wouldn't benefit from her afking in the jungle, then who knows what else they could come up with by learning lessons from drowstrats. We could have so many more HEROstrats in the game - first position tanks enabling squishy supports to take down buildings, second position initiators bringing enemy team into Black Hole or Macropyre, first position supporters giving vision for Powershots, Strokes of Fate, and so much more - alas, seems like Volvo just don't wanna bother. A shame.
@@donbionicleimo this kind pf metas from time to time are a good thing, the fact that over the course of dota there were pushing strats that ended the games in 20mins, drow strats, summon meta, naga or am meta where u literally picked 4 heroes willing to die over n over again to make space for naga to carry 1v5 and so many more made dota fun to watch over the years even tho im not playing anymore. Lol on the other hand never caught my attention for example because the games are usually one dimensional in all metas and the variations over the years are more in the hero played not in the playstyle of the whole team
For me, Drow one-shoting creeps was one of her best era. Had my best streak with her so far (9-0) and overall won something like 1k mmr (granted it was in unison with 'Game Ender' Luna)
I hated that hero at the time. It was ludicrous that she can one shot Ancient creeps(it got changed to not one shot ancient creeps shortly after)making her farm speed untouchable compared to the rest. For a time she was my go to ban when she had this ability.
Warlock is a ballsy choice with a Drow strat. Golem is sort of like a temporary Front line. I think golem placement really won or lost a lot of those fights.
This videos really needs to be funded into a professional documentary series! The quality on them is amazing! I love the way You talk about the design, competitiveness and viability of the Game! I hope as more resources are aviable the uploading este improved because 1 every month will take A LOT. Also a vídeo like this talking about the map would be amazing as well! Thanks Baumi and Team! You all are great!
DOTA 2 really is a different game from Defense of the Ancient (DOTA 1) In DOTA 1, we usually just upgrade her 3rd skill and stat. We would buy dominator and treads, lothar, yasha to manta, buriza, and butterfly. She was one of the best carry, with one of the greatest dps.
back in 2013 drow was mid like every game. she would start ganking by about 4 mins. it was a massacre almost every game. mask of madness was MADE for her.
