Great video, easy to follow. For those with the older first gen Taco’s (01-04) same concept applies and works as shown - just here to verify for those still on the line.
Do you need to do anything under the dash in the 04 Tacoma? Since I want to it's over here where did make the side light a blinker and the bumper lights into fog lights
Was a easy mod. I have a 1998 tacoma and instead of a "Electronic flasher" i need to buy a "flasher relay". It is located behind the fuse panel pretty easy to spot a little difficult to unplug. I went with the bigger bulbs mentioned early in the comments. Thanks for the video!
Cristian I have a 2002 Tacoma and trying to do the same mod, what does the flasher relay look like and is there a specific flasher relay I need to buy?
For anyone on the fence, this works on a 2004 Tacoma. Disclaimer: I haven’t swapped the electronic flasher yet, but will soon. Either way, it’s street legal. 👍🏼 Update: The electronic flasher used in the video works. I opted to install LED bulbs for extra brightness and have no hyperflash. Of note, with the LED’s, I have to drive with my headlights or parking lights on at all times-otherwise the corner lights don’t blink. This is likely due to the lack of load from switching to LED’s, but if you stick with stock bulbs, you should be fine.
@@victorestrada1159 basically if you don't swap to an electronic flasher, your turn signals will flash very quickly (hyper flash) due to the low load of the tiny turn signals.
Thanks for the video. Working on this mod now. Always hated that my blinkers could only be seen from the front. Suggestion for this and future videos, list details like the blinker module part number and which wires to cut and join. Had to watch it a few times to get it. Thanks again for sharing. This method is way easier than a lot of forums suggest.
This is what I’ve been looking to do! 1 bulb for both functions! Super helpful! 1 question though, so when you’re running lights are on does the running light “turn off” to become your blinker? Or do both running lights turn off… or etc.?
@snailtrail4x4 mod was a little different in an 86. The flasher is located on the fuse panel, located behind the driver side kick panel. The EL12 wouldn't just plug in so I had to run some jumper leads to it. Bonus, the EL12 works with LED 194 bulbs. Just and play. No need for separate resistors.
FYI, this sorta worked with LED bulbs. So it worked just fine testing it. It wasn't until I went to turn on the headlights that I noticed the blinkers weren't work. Swapped them out for standard bulbs and everything works great. For some reason with the headlights on there wasn't enough resistance to make the flasher work. So keep the incandescent bulbs on this one. Well if you plan to drive at night anyway.
UPDATE: Parking lights off with hazards on = hazards will not signal in the front and my dimmable after market stereo dims and stays dim when the hazards are on. Parking lights on with hazards = hazards work fine. Parking lights off with left turn signal = working left turn and strobing aftermarket stereo. Parking lights off with right turn signal = working right turn and strobing aftermarket stereo. Parking lights on with left turn signal = works fine. Parking lights on with right turn signal = works fine. Note1: when parking lights are on the stereo auto dims. Note2: i do not have a flasher relay in yet to fix the rapid flashing. Will post another update when i do
@@SnailTrail4x4 you still didn’t explain what the module does. Is a turn signal module needed to make this work? I mean you had it working before the module. I’m just confused haha
@@mcjeff1210 the module slows down the speed of the turn signal. Usually if you replace a regular bulb with an LED it crates a hyper flash. This happens because the LED draws less amperage than a regular bulb so the system thinks it’s a “blown bulb”. The module he installed just slows the hyper flash to normal speed
Hi! I know this is an older video but I just did this mod to my 92 pickup and everything works, except my left signal. When running lights are on it lights up, but won’t work as a turn indicator. Did my right exactly the same and it’s working fine
Hey so I just did this mod as you described. I splice the blinker power (green) into the parking lamp ground (white black). It blew the factory 10A turn signal fuse but worked fine with a 15A. The blinkers work fine when the parking lights are on but hardly illuminate at all when the parking lights are turned off. Also the entire dash flashes when the blinkers are on and the coolant temp gauge and tach needle wag with the blinker. Will the E12 flasher eliminate any of this? It is coming in the mail in a couple days. Thanks!
I'm a little confused about your question. You can of course continue to run two lights, then you wouldn't need the module. You can put the blinker light into the corner light, run two lights in there and than you wouldn't need the module. But as soon as your cutting wires you're going to need the module.
I think your question is what I did with mine. I just used a french connector to splice onto the 194 ground wire. I get both marker and blinker with a switchback but when the headlights are on my switchbacks blink in white, not amber.
What’s the purpose of the flasher thing under the dash if the bulb was flashing when you wired it up? I mean it was flashing after you wired it into the marker light, then you added the flash thing?
When you switch the wires around the relay thinks there is a burnt out buld and it flashes quickly, so adding the new relay slows the flashes down to a normal speed.
What do I do with the positive wire to the blinker light? Sorry not very electrically inclined. Just making sure I can dangle it or if Im suppose to trace it to the origin back to the power source and remove it. Thank you!
and is it necessary to do the module? The fast blinking doesn't bother me but just want to make sure its not an electrical issue which is why you do the resistor module
I don't know how those newer versions work. They have different wires I believe. One thing people have done is still a hole in the corner of the housing and put the blinker inside
Dude why don't you hog the marker light hole to the size of the turn signal socket? Then, drill a hole below for the marker light socket. All purpose bit, utility knife/razor blade to cut the notch.
Will this work the other way around. I mean by like making the original turn signals into running lights and still be able to flash like a regular blinker?
So with my park lights you have to turn a switch to turn them on. Will this have to be on in order for the blinkers to work? Or will they work while the marker light switch is off?
could you just cut both marker wires and splice in the blinker wires? essentially relocating blinker to marker spot without having to modify bulb housings? Edit: splicing the blinkers into corner lights worked. just had to cap off the running light wires and tuck em away. because the bulbs are smaller it did have a hyper blink so I replaced the factory flasher with one for LEDs. part number is EP35 from AutoZone if anybody needs it. for first generation Taco. (02 prerunner)
Still think this was worth it but unfortunately the blinkers/hazard lights on the front only work with the parking lights turned on in my case. Just have to remember to turn them on before I take off now.
@@likits1999 yes the 921 is a bigger bulb but he’s making the side markers as his main front signals so would be brighter and more noticeable. The way the bulb is positioned, it should fit the bezel/housing. Also, since it’s LEDs, iit will have an operating temp less than a regular 192 so no worries on melting the lens using a 921 LED
@@SnailTrail4x4 actually I'm running l.e.ds and come to find out of I flip them one way and turned the markers on the l.e.ds will flash while the running lights are on but will not flash when the lights are off. And when I flip them the other way they will flash with the markers off but not when the markers are turned on.
@@tmac1666 -- interesting that you have LED, but glad flipping the bulb around seamed to work. Maybe there is a different signal for each blinker and running light
I did something similar without cutting the wires when I got my Relentless bumper for my 01 Taco but I didnt cut any wires or install a new flasher. I used a switchback 194 but I hear I have to install a relay so my blinking light turns amber when the headlights are on. My blinkers are amber only when the headlights are off. BTW, I have 100% clear lenses. No more amber in them. Again, could you please explain what that 2 prong flasher replacement is for?
That's cool and good to know. When doing this mod you are cutting the blinker wiring and this causes the blinker acts like it has a burnt out bulb and flashes quickly. The 2 prong relay forces the flashing pattern to be normal speed.
Bro. What is that connector that connects to the corner light bulb? I got new corner lights for my 4 runner that fit with a Toyota pickup corner lights and I can’t find the connector that fit into them.
Not sure if it would work on a Tacoma, they are different trucks, if the wiring is the same than it should work perfectly. What/how many wires are there for the blinkers and corner lights in the Tacoma
So I tried this other day. I have a winch bumper that has to little round blinkers on it. So my 2 blinker wires have a clip wire into them that have 4 wires coming from the 2 lights that plug into it. I grabbed a wire and wired them 2 the same wires in the video. So i did that and my side marker light blinked and was blinking regular but my dash was going crazy and my blinkers in my bumper weren't working. Any reason it would do that?
@@haloreach7469 -- Sorry Chanse, I wasn't trying to avoid your question I just haven't heard an answer if someone has gotten it to work. Lots of comments about issues they are having and some random solutions so I am hoping you might find the answer you're looking for in the comments. I haven't tried to do this mod on another vehicle besides my 3rd Gen Pickup so I don't know the answer.
SnailTrail4x4 Right, no worries at all. RU-vid makes life easy when people like you go through the trouble of making videos to help others. So thanks again for a great video
@@rubenr.8974 I was thinking about just taking the buld and assembly from blinkers and putting them into the running light by making a suitable hole with locking tabs.
You can do that also, it would work. You install the relay because you disconnected the blinker. Because we cut the lines to the blinker it always thinks there is a open circuit "burnt bulb". It does the fast blinking blinker effect in the cab. The relay makes it have a DOT approved blinking pattern.
So basically combine the blinker wire to the ground of the parking light. And leave the power wire of the parking light intact? Do you also have to disconnect the ground of the parking light or combine with blinker wire?
I went to do this same mod on my wheeler and when I hit the blinker my battery gage start go back and fourth and it’s very dim lighting 😂🤦🏻♂️ 1993 single cab
@@SnailTrail4x4 yep pretty much I do believe so. Mine is the last year model of the straight axle. So they mix and match parts from 83. Could be an oddball Maybe
