Hello again Richard. I left a comment a day or two ago about having trouble seeing white chalk lines on my light colored velour. New to Upholstery with 39 Chevy. I tried masking tape but it didn't seem to remain straight when I sewed because the sew foam scrim backing collapsed under the foot pressure and the line became distorted. I also tried your advice and bought the best scrim I could. I had been using the pink scrim to save $ but the black backed stuff arrived yesterday, I put my chalk marks on the back of that and then sew the pleats with the scrim side up. That is working for me and my line was straight. Thank you for your fine instruction. I am retired and am not looking for a new trade but I want to develop a new fun skill. You're the master. Thank you again. Fred.+ I am amazed that you actually read my comment and then actually wrote a reply. You are really dedicated.

Hello Whitey, Yep, I answer every comment because sometimes people need help. I sew from the backside when I roll and pleat or tuck and roll. When I do that, I first sew the line on top, flip it over, fold the seam then sew it on the backside. Anything is possible with upholstery right? Please keep liking and watching!

One of my tricks is before I sew these type channels is on the back side cut the fibers ( not all the way through) along the line. When you sew you have more control to sew it straight because the material lays flat. It’s the same concept as the old tuck and roll. These seats remind me of the old channel back sofas. The comfort of these seats is far superior to modern day car seats. I’m retired now and what I’m saying is it’s take skill and patients to do the old interiors. I hope your customer appreciates your labors. Thank You

Hi Rudolph, thought ya might find this video interesting - Ford mo co. from back in the 20's and 30's processing the material and making interiors from start to finish - Ford made/processed EVERYTHING in house, including the yarn and cotton for seat materials and complete seat cushions, pretty neat to see from so many years ago - I see they even had a special press to compress the seat springs so the skirts could be pulled up and tacked into place.

I just finished this video and I really like it. Although there is not too much restoration of 20's and 30's cars as you mention, there still is restoration. I mastered paint and bodywork, self taught many moons ago and I just bought an old Pfaff walking foot sewing machine a couple days ago. I know very little about upholstery and this video was spectacularly helpful. I would really like to see just how the backrest of the front seat is done. Please. I have a 1933 Willys Deluxe Custom sedan waiting for me and I can use all the help I can get. Thank You Thank You

Wow, you really do beautiful work. Those mud dauber’s nests that were in the seats show up everywhere. I’ve had to knock them off of my old car too. I’ve got a ‘26 Model T Ford that I’m finally starting to do the upholstery on. I drive her all over town now, and I’m starting to get embarrassed by the shower curtain seat covers. I’ve made patterns for the door panels, and I’ll be using the old 1910 Singer sewing machine that came with my house. It’s an open touring car, so I’ll be using vinyl, and I suppose I’ll have to use a stronger thread. I love seeing you do those pleats. I always wondered how each pleat stayed puffy on its own. Now I see that each one is individually stuffed. Keep up the great work. I’m hoping to see you stuff the seat back as well, since it’s more like the back of a sofa.

You guys in the states have great trimming supplies such as Le Baron Bonnie etc. A brilliant leathers supplier in New York ( who’s name escapes me ). Hi, very informative video, thanks for posting. I have a question, can you please explain why you use a jute pad in this one and why you don't have an initial layer of burlap covering the springs? Does the jute do the same job as the burlap?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery Год назад
Yes, your right. the jute pad does the same thing as the burlap but is much stronger.

Hi! Your videos are so helpful--I had a question. Why did you cover the seat frame with the jute pad for this restoration but use burlap in another? Is there a reason you would choose one over the other? Thank you!

Hello Melissa, You are so welcome! From what I remember is, the springs in the 1927 Chevy were very soft. So Jute pad helped a lot to stabilize them. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Richard, and thanks for your wonderful and informative videos. I am beginning to reupholster my 1939 Chevy seats. I am a novice. I am using light colored khaki velour and I am having trouble marking the pleat lines so I can see them to sew them straight. I am trying to use white chalk. You said you never use yellow because it can stain. What would you use to mark the lines. I am wondering if masking tape would work and then sew at the edge of the tape? What do you think. Thanks for your comments. Fred.

Hello Fred, That is the wonderful thing about trying something new. See if it works for you, and if it is so, Score! Try to sharpen the white chalk and see if that works out for you. Or, develop your own technique of using tape! Please keep liking and watching!

may I ask what is the preferred thread used when reupholstering antique car seats? size needle for the softer faux leather or leather for interior car seats?
@oldschoolautoupholstery

Hi! I just use the standard thread and needle I have been using for 43 years. 135x17 needle and T90 thread. I use this on everything with my industrial sewing machine.
