EXACTLY the kind of video I need to see! 25+ years ago I bought an upholstery sewing machine, figured out how to work it, and did an acceptable job re-upholstering my boat. The boat is now long gone, but I have 17 other cars of my own. I'm just a hobbyist. My friends accuse me of running an indoor junk yard. I need new Jeep seats for my 1986 CJ7. It suddenly dawned on me I still have the upholstery sewing machine. Since I did the boat, there is now RU-vid, Ebay, Amazon, etc so I'm learning all there is to know about my sewing machine, and I need to learn how to fix my Jeep seats, which I've been repairing the last few years with pool noodles and duct tape! LOL! So I'm gonna do this right. THANKS for this video and the others like it. You went over a couple of things that I said, "Oh, I remember figuring that out when I did the boat!" I never used glue (didn't know any better). I think I got the foam rubber at Walmart probably. I have learned a LOT and am gonna keep learning from videos like yours! I'm retired, and have no intention of working on anybody ELSE's stuff but it sure will be fun to make my stuff look better!

Excellent instructions. Nice and slow, easy to follow. I'm about to embark on reupholstering my 1972 7-seater VW T2 van of which the vinyl covers have pulverised. Cheap white couch real leather available from charity store furniture aplenty. Next step, a heavy duty sewing machine. Your videos inspire me to just go at it.

can you tell me the density of that foam youre using? i heard you say 1/2" thick scrim. but ive seen most upholsterers use a 50 lb on the seat areas and 100 lb in the bolsters. im about to order my foam for my seats ,very soon. i spoke to you yesterday about it. i want to turn a flat old spring seat into a bolstered end almost like like a bucket bench. The springs are very lofty still and i like how the spring seats feel. i just want to use thicker foam on the ends and maybe in the lumbar area for more contour and support. do you have any videos doing something like that? again, thank you very much , I look forward to watching more of your work.

Absolutely precision work. Love watching these videos. I do have a question. I thought you would need some seam allowance to connect the panels. Even a 1/4 inch I thought. They look fabulous so your doing it correctly.

Hi Rudolph, great video, one question …. Why didn’t you make the 2” pleats a bit bigger before sewing so that the finished pleat is actually 2” like the original ?
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery Год назад
Hi! Thank you! You are right, I add a little bit, 1/4" to the measurement because after the vinyl is added to the foam, there is a third dimension. The result is a finished 2-inch pleat.

Is there room on the sides for margin to sew side panels onto? Just curious as I think I need 3/8" or 10mm to have material for long lasting strong sewn joints to sides. Maybe missing something as I am sewing leather onto custom buckets after welding newer donor seats. Thanks again for an informative video! Regards.

Hello Richard. I watched a video that you made a while back where you made new sun visors. Good video, but I haven't been able to source the fiber board that you used. I guess it is a non-corrugated cardboard but I don't know exactly what it is called or where I can find it. I have asked for non-corrugated cardboard or mounting board at Home Depot and they don't seem to know what it is. Please help and give me a name or source for it.I have finished the front and back seat cushions and back rests for my '39 Chevy and now I am working on the side panels that enclose the back seats. But now it is spring and mowing and planting and greenhouse duties are getting in the way. Happy Spring! A great time to be alive. Fred.

can you tell me the density of that foam youre using? i heard you say 1/2" thick scrim. but ive seen most upholsterers use a 50 lb on the seat areas and 100 lb in the bolsters. im about to order my foam for my seats ,very soon. i spoke to you yesterday about it. i want to turn a flat old spring seat into a bolstered end almost like like a bucket bench. The springs are very lofty still and i like how the spring seats feel. i just want to use thicker foam on the ends and maybe in the lumbar area for more contour and support. do you have any videos doing something like that? again, thank you very much , I look forward to watching more of your work.
