Hey all! I know this is quite a departure from my normal how to videos, but mainly, this is an upload for the SkillsUSA how to video competition and some of the requirements are that it has to be less than 3 minutes long and that it cannot contain logos or copyright material. That's why the video is so short, does not cover everything as thoroughly as usual, and is so chopped up to avoid showing labels for parts.

Just in case anyone is still watching this video, the manual does not call for 4 quarts of oil, it calls for about 2.6 quarts (2.5 liters) and the socket sizes are reversed: you'll need 17mm for the bottom and 13 for the top.

Great upload.! Just a suggestion, but, I'd smear a little clean oil on the O-ring, before reinstalling the housing. On my third CX, still an awesome bike.

Good idea. I do it on my car's gaskets, and I should've done it on my bike's as well.

Great video man. I have some oil filters on the way for my 80 cx500c and I had no idea what to expect as I'm brand new to automobiles. Learning a lot from this bike, thanks for the upload.

Just got a '79 CX500 (standard) and after being in a barn 25yrs, needed an oil change. Only difference was for mine, it took a 17mm socket for the oil drain, and the oil filter cover was a 12mm. Head was small but had a wide moulded in washer below the head of the bolt. I used 2.5 litres of Shell Rotella T (15w40) since many forums for the CX500 recommended it. Still more work to be done before my bike will start up though. :S

Hey, I know this is 7 years old so this is a long shot. I just bought a 1980 CX500C and the oil light was on. I just checked it and it's pretty clean and topped up, anyone know what I should check next?

Might be late but here we go; before disassemble anything remove one valves cover and crank the engine, if you see oil flowing freely then you have a faulty pressure switch which is at the front of the engine behind the radiator, if you have to change it tight it carefully, it’s delicate, if the oil doesn’t flow at the valves top then the failure is probably at the oil pump which is inside the engine case, hope this helps, good luck!!👍🏻

needed to oil o ring or it will weld to metal and possible housing failure next time you try to unscrew it no dis intended just experience with that problem and advice to ya thanx for the info appreciated it and hope i could help as well

That's really only necessary if the engine hasn't run in years. If you're doing regular oil changes, it's really just unnecessary.

Good video, just brought a 1982 500 silverwing to replace my ace tourer that was destroyed in a headon... It sat in a garage since 2004 and only has 7500 miles on it.. The widow said her husband only rode it to the bars on saturday.. Just got the book on the bike so plan on doing an oil, radiator flush this weekend, Did you have any problems with the old oil coming out to fast ? I saw another video where a guy used old clothes to slow down the oil and channel it in to a pan....
