How to Achieve Good Lighting (in your self-tapes)

You're welcome! It's tough to be an actor AND a lighting expert, sound expert, editor, etc.

It's clipped to the ceiling. A simple clamp light from Home Depot.

That will depend on the geography of your room, and the camera you use. Since we're using a camera with a zoom lens, we like to get the camera at least 7-8 feet away, and then zoom to the appropriate frame. And in our room, we have the two main lights (key and fill) at the same distance as the camera, but placed 45 degrees off axis against the side walls. If your room was smaller, or your lights weren't too powerful, you might need to get the lights closer. If you're using an iPhone or DSLR without a zoom lens, you may need to get the camera up close, and let the lights be further away. That help?

Well in your own setup I would encourage you to tweak the brightness and location to your liking. But I’d also encourage you to look at any network, cable, or streaming TV show, or any movie, and watch for the hair light. It’s there. And when it’s not, it’s highly intentional. In the end, though, you have the power to creat your own lighting scheme for self-tapes. I was merely hoping to educate actors to the bare fundamentals of lighting.

Get Taped! - I understand, I’m just saying what my experience was when that particular light was turned on. That’s where my eyes kept focusing from that point. After watching the vid and before I commented I went and re-watched other vids I had seen in the past to compare if they were the same and maybe I’d just not noticed, but they didn’t have it that way so it was a notable visual distinction. I’ll pay more attention to the hair light in some shows as you’d suggested
