My overarching goal: writing music. I hope I'm not missing the point you made. I know my goal sounds like a means to get somewhere, but to me happiness lies in sitting down writing music, and I want to be able to do it as consistently as possible. That's my baseline.

Pretty creepy how all of this resonates so much with what I’m currently going through (again!). My goal is to develop my solo fingerstyle project and growing my « fan base » on YT (gave lots of effort to it on FB recently, and worked quit well). But for now I am involved in lots of different projects (at least 2 gigs a week) and that helps to secure a bit of money (I am also teaching) to spare some time later to create content, building a go to set up to be able to do it on a regular basis, etc...). Which is quite exciting, but for now I am working to excess and have to split my brain into as many parts as the different activities (let’s say 8, 5 music projects and 3 teaching jobs) and I can only feel the tension created by what I really want to do artistically and what I have to. But I guess that’s part of the game and patience is needed. I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I started this project almost two years ago, by myself, from scratch and have to admit that it feels right and better than any project I’ve ever been involved in and things are moving forward in a very pleasing way, according to my values. I never thought I would be capable to create music on my own, recording and produce it, promoting it on social media (something I wouldn’t even think of a couple of years ago), finding gigs, playing them alone, talking with people, creating personal music that finds resonance in them. So I am in this delicate transitional spot but more than ever, I can feel the goal is worth it. Which is progressively lifting off some activities from my weekly schedule to concentrate more on the most satisfying ones. Great advices on this one mate, thanx!

My overarching goal is to find a place in the music business for myself as a person that musicians, film makers, producers and students of music come to for advice or to have a problem solved. I want this place to be able to support an active lifestyle, allowing me to do what I am passionate about the very most: Making people have fun and joy in their lives.

To be a successful EDM/Pop producer, travel around the word and meet new people. By “successful producer” I mean to produce a lot of great music that will be in the top charts, but rather then following the typical style of music, I’ll try to interpret something new and exciting. Also, writing not just for myself and my brand but for other amazing artists. Yes that’s my goals, thx for reading and I’ll go working towards my goals;)

A big thank you Damian. I suffer from depression and I guess part of that was thinking that I'm a bit of a loser because I am not in a position to make money from what I love doing. However, as you said, I am successful because I do what I love doing. My goal is to be able to mix a song to a radio ready standard. I am very close to achieving that but I am a perfectionist as well as a coward lol.

Thanks Damian, found this really interesting. I had my first national radio play this week, which has been a goal I set myself for this year. I've also started interviewing creatives about making a living in the arts and when I ask them about their idea of "success" the answers have been very enlightening because everyone has their own definition and measure of being successful. I find this whole area fascinating and have been enjoying your videos since I discovered you last week. Your suggestion to look after fans has really opened my eyes. Thanks!

Our goal is to help revive 60's R&B and garage rock and target it to the younger generations. We love these music styles too much to want to let them die. The original 60's music fans are getting too old to go out to venues and buy physical music, so we need some kinds of strategies to be able to appeal to younger fans. Thanks for this video, Damian! :-)

@mattwatsonthesecrethelicopters
Amen to that Damo! This ties in with what I was saying on the last video. For me my goal is pretty simple. To be able to create, release and perform my own music, keep engaging with the people who love what I do and make enough that it pays for itself. That to me would be success in a nut shell. Little bonus things tend to happen along the way and if you keep integrity, love what you do and frankly, don't be a dick as you go. You'll find a great musical life. I am...

Hi Damian, I’m liking the new video style. My goal is a simple one, it’s to get to a space where my passion projects pay for themselves and become self financing. Over the years I’ve spent small fortune pursuing my passion for music. I’ve seen peaks and troughs in terms of rewards (rewards not really my motivation). It would be nice for projects to pay for themselves or fund the next. Keep up the good work👍

A very effective method to finding the steps to get to your goal, is to start at the end, start at where you want to be, and go backwards until you reach where you are. For example, i want a ferrari and a 50 million dollar company. Then ask, how did I get there? And take a step back. This requires you to fully know your goal of course

I want to record 50 songs on my eight track, then evolve, rerecord, etc. I have alot more on four track, but for some reason, 50 will make me smile. After that, i'd love to get my channel monetized, and do less yardwork, and have more time for music. Right now, it's a big challenge. I've played in cover bands, had my own original band. The toughest thing is to have everyone wanting the same thing. I haven't been successful with that, because bassists and drummers want $. I felt like band members had their hands out instead of being supportive, and i didn't want that. Too much pressure. I wanted comrades, not hired guns. I've accepted it, and realized that my greatest satisfaction is creating, even if it's just 8 track recordings.

My overarching goal is to create timeless pieces and be an influencer through my music. Yes, success is highly subjective, just like beauty. Of course the mainstream culture would try to force it down your throat what success means, but when you go with their definition you are not going to unleash your full potential nor get proper satisfaction from what you're doing. The greatest artists in history were not those who made the most money, or those who had the most followers in their times. One big problem now is via Internet you see the commercial performances involuntarily, unlike in the past. So, how you stay focused and determined on your own path becomes harder in a way. Anyway, let your passion guide you. Music and other art forms need diversity to flourish.

An unchanging overarching goal is a difficult thing to create. I often ask myself, 'What do I really want?'. It's just about the deepest question you can ask yourself. I think of Kurt Cobain. He had what I always thought success was. Obviously, it wasn't what he truly wanted. So how does one create an overarching goal that won't disappoint, that won't be misguided? I don't know, which is why I do not have such a goal.

Hello Damian and guys reading me!I just started managing a pop-electronic artist who finished her EP(5 titles).Recording cost was 1.500$.She paid the studio 900e but she owes them 600e to receive her E.P and she needs on top of that 1.000$ for the first video clip(she can't do it for free.She really wants to work with one videographer who had a vision for her single). Any ideas where we could find that money?She comes from the busker scene and is not know at all in the bar-club scene. Playing where I live in bars will only get her 50$ for a show.Doing 30 shows to get that money will take 6 month.We don't have 6 month to wait and at the moment I don't have myself 1.600$ to invest on her(and it's not also the job of the manager to do that).Any super guerilla marketing ideas guys?

Very informative. and a big part of the truth. But: as I understand this, this means: I have first to behave like a drug dealer and give away some free stuff to make the persons to addicts (which then are called „fans“) to make them buy something from me (which I also have to produce. And my music (which is the thing, I want to produce) is worth nothing, but it is the bait, the lure, i have to use to get the addicted ones to get them on my hook. And I have to produce some things I do not want to produce (hoodies, a journey of my life, etc). As I see, this works only for musicians who love to be on tour (gigs). Or who love to prostitute their live on the internet (classic showbiz people, extraverts). But what about the introvert musicians (I fear, this are about 50% of the musicians!) who dont want to produce Hoodies, their Live or gigs? Is there a chance for those as well?
