In this video we walk you through the basic steps on the correct way to acid wash a swimming pool. Important points to remember:
-Make sure pumps, lights, and water features are all shut down
-Set your submersible pump at the lowest point in the pool and make sure you're not going to flood your's or your neighbor's home
-Follow all local laws regarding pool drains
-Take appropriate safety measures when working with hazardous chemicals.
Plaster pools are very heat sensitive so do your best to avoid draining when the temperatures will be above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Pebble finish pools can tolerate higher temps. In almost all cases your pool water will be safe to drain to your grass, trees, or plants but it's always good to get the advice of a trusted pool professional for your specific situation. This goes for the acidic water that you'll be pumping out during the acid wash itself. Once the acid wash is complete and you start to refill, turn your water leveler on as well as your hose or hoses. Once the water gets within a few inches of the set level, turn your hoses off and let the water leveler finish the job. Backwash your filter before restarting the pool.

First thing I noticed was the time box missing the insulator that covers the wiring. I keep spares on my truck to make sure those terminals are always covered. It looks like you have a 208-277V (T104) timer running a 110V pump. It's never a good idea to mix and match (btw the terminal in the middle with no wire attached is electrified when the pump is on). Good info on the acid wash!

Thanks so much for the detailed video. I have a couple of questions and am hoping that you can provide your expert opinion. My pool company messed up and delayed the brushing of the spa after the plaster and now the spa has several whilte lines / streaks in it. 1 month post plaster and still not usable yet, they are now saying that they will have to acid wash to remove those streaks. My questions are 1. It's a medium / small spa ( 6 person maybe 2000 gallons), so would it be better for me to get them to just replaster it? 2. Are there any downsides to acid washing? Meaning , will it affect the color of the original plaster? 3. Seems like acid wash is just as labor intensive as replastering, so does one cost more than the other? Is that why you think they are insisting on acid washing to fix this? 4. Lastly, we were told that a spa cannot be heated up for upto 30 days after a plaster, is it the same with acid washing? or will the pool be ready for use sooner after the acid wash process? Really appreciate if you could answer these for me
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS 7 лет назад
+Sz Ki I apologize for not responding sooner! They are correct about acid washing and replastering is WWWWWAYYYYYYYY more labor intensive than acid washing. Acid washing for a spa your size (closer to 6-700 gallons) is a 90 minute job including draining and refilling. Replastering would be at least s 2 day process. Keep in mind too that the first 30 days of plaster are like having a newborn baby. For the same reason you have to brush everyday (there is actually a way to start up the pool or spa without any dust forming), because the plaster is curing and is really vulnerable to staining. Things like the balance of the water (see my water balance video to learn more) which are affected by temperature can wreak havoc on a brand new surface.
@allboutthemojo
@allboutthemojo 7 лет назад
Swimming Pool Science thanks for the reply. they have since acid washed and the white streaks are gone but tthe plaster color appears dull and there is constantly dirt In the corners of the spa that appear stuck and don't budge with scrubbing. it's now been 3 months post fill but they never did a proper start up ( so no chemical balance was done). could the damage be permanent? what can I do? there is no glow to the plaster. it looks dull and I selected color blue quartz.

I should mention...if you are going to empty the pool i HIGHLY recommend you pump the water far away into a sewer, and not on the lawn by the pool. The water table from all that water being pumped could get high and if you don't remove the bottom drain plug of the pool under the bottom drain cap, your pool could lift and then you are in big trouble...use muriatic acid...it works great!

@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS 5 лет назад
Here in Phoenix our grass and plants love it! Keep in mind that before we start pouring, we’re already diluted to a 15% solution. By the time it reacts with calcium on the pool surface, makes its way down to the bottom where the pump is and the hose is running then gets pumped out....the pH is closer to neutral (7.5) than a can on Mountain Dew!

Great job. In a crusty algae pool does the acid dissolve the algae and suspend it so it can be pumped out? Wondering because there is a lot. Also would the acid and algae neutralize the acid enough to reduce the amount of soda ash used in the deep end?

@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS 3 года назад
It’s not you, it’s the calcification. I’ve done acid washes with straight acid before but that’s next level stuff. The fumes are 10X nastier and the acid can do twice as much damage if you spill or goof something up. Keep in mind also that there’s no way of knowing how deep the stains go into the surface and this is one of the problems with acid washing is because of this, there are no guarantees that the stains will be removed when you actually do acid wash. Sure you could acid wash your way past just about any stain but will there be any surface left??? Just be careful and don’t take things too far.

Irresponsible, not only with your own safety, but with others And 5% w/v HCl is all we used for acid cleaning industrial boilers, including huge power station boilers, never 50/50 like you just did. Dave Pedretti 13,000. You'd be amazed at how much water our yards in Phoenix can handle. We get flood irrigation twice a month in the summer. I take about 40,000+ gallons in 90 minutes at my house!

no need to drain and acid wash!! Vitamin C dropped on the stain or rubbed on the wall will remove the stains. To remove the iron from the water, use a product called "Rust Out" , apply 3lbs and watch stains and any red tent go away on contact and will not affect your chemical levels. Sounds like a great technique for a place like Louisiana where the water table can be too high for safe draining. Here in the south west we flight with water hardness and constantly high CYA levels so drains are pretty routine for water changes. We’re also lucky that we don’t have to worry about the pools trying to float out of the ground.

@@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS I live in Tempe, and I am battling with high CYA. I no longer use tablets and it's coming down, but I will still do a partial drain. What do you suggest to bring the hardness down?
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS 4 года назад
Aaron Brown the drain will bring the hardness down as well. I’d just do a full drain. If you’re doing it yourself, start the drain early afternoon so that the pool will be empty by 7 or 8 pm. You can hose it out and start refilling by 8 or 9 and it will be 1/2 to 3/4 full before it gets too hot the next day. Then you can start fresh and dial everything in.

Yes, it goes to the yard. The acid is very diluted (with a higher pH than a soft drink) by the time it gets into the yard.

False. Notice how we thoroughly rinsed the pool then filled it with 1,000s Of gallons of high pH, high alkalinity tap water. We find (at least in AZ) that we have to add additional acid to balance things out once the pool is back up and running.

Tommy Flyer uh....not sure I understand your comment. I’m guessing Joe has had his pool FULL of water for the last 18 years and thus it could be drained if the chemistry is far too wonky to balance it into shape. If it’s never had water for the last 18 years, it would be a little tricky to drain.

scott stone yeah, there’s some nasty chemicals and substances that absorb easily through the skin. Fortunately the mild concentration of acid we use would take a long time to break the skin down and start doing real damage. I don’t suggest following my bad habits when handling acid but it won’t do what it does in the movies and cartoons.

Charles Clements we purchase our hydrochloric acid at 31.25% concentration then dilute it by half for the acid wash. When you pour it it still releases pretty strong fumes but unless you have a cut, scrape, or bug bite, it doesn’t irritate my skin if a bit splashes on.

Watch a bit closer, you’re absolutely right on the PPE but I address that multiple times in the video. As far as the acid just “sitting on the pool floor”, keep in mind that it’s diluted down to 16% before I pour. The hose is constantly running in the pool diluting it down to between 1-3% before it’s removed from the pool via the submersible pump that is constantly running. Come jump in the pool for yourself and see first hand. It still looks great today because we’ve kept the water chemistry balanced.

So you’d submerge yourself in water for a couple hours on end but are legitimately concerned that the same water will kill grass? I’m considered a professional since I have a better understanding and know more when it comes to swimming pools than you. For example. Being a professional means I have read and done my homework on what is safe to mix and what is NOT safe to mix. Don’t worry though, I’ve learned to steer clear of potential customers with your mindset. Thanks for your concern for my health though. @@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS I agree. When you've got enough experience behind you, you are aware of the level of risk associated when dealing with different chems in different situations. I've been throwing acid for 25 years and if you have enough sense to keep your face out of the fumes it's no issue. I also have no skin damage. I think our commenter here probably has to read the instructions on his shampoo bottle every time. I wouldn't want to work on his pool either.

@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS
@SwimmingPoolAZ-SPS 4 года назад
Concentrated Acid? Let’s use some common sense here. The acid concentration is 31% out of the bottle, that gets diluted by half before I pour it. When I pour it, it mostly neutralizes while reacting with calcium. After all that, the garden hose is running at probably 25 gallons a minute to further dilute it down. Do some homework man. Orange Juice has a lower pH than what gets pumped out of the pool.
