In this video I go through the steps how to activate (fill with electrolyte) and charge a new AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery. I also go through all DOs and DON'Ts of the AGM battery activation and initial charge.
Battery used: Yuasa AGM Battery YTX12-BS - YUAM3RH2S (www.yuasabatteries.com/batter...)

"When you buy an AGM battery, you either get it Factory Activated or Bottle Supplied.
If you have a Factory Activated battery, it is filled with electrolyte, sealed and charged. In this case you just install it on your bike, and you are done. You don’t need to watch this video further then. Instead check another one where I show how to install the battery on the bike.

I have a dry battery with the electrolyte supplied in the plastic container. Before you activate the battery make sure that a foil sealing strip is in place with no damages. When you unseal it, you need to activate and charge it right away otherwise it will begin to oxidize that is not good for the battery.
Activation of the AGM battery is pretty straight forward, but you need to keep in mind a couple things to make it right.
- Never use anything else to activate the battery other than the supplied container with the electrolyte. It has a high concentration of sulfuric acid, more concentrated that the electrolyte for conventional batteries, and it would be unsafe to use something else. Supplied containers also have exact amount of the electrolyte required.
- Make sure you read the instructions that came with the battery.
- Never smoke when you activate the battery.
- Wear gloves and protective eye wear.
Steps to activate the battery:
- Put the battery on a level surface.
- Remove the electrolyte container from the plastic bag.
- Remove the strip of caps from the container, don’t through it away as we will use it later. Do not pierce or open the foil seal from the electrolyte container. Do not separate the containers one from another.
- Place the electrolyte container with the foil seals face down into the cell filler ports on the battery, hold the container level and carefully push it down to break the foil seals. Electrolyte will start to flow into the battery. You should see air bubbles inside the container. Do not tilt the container. Electrolyte is flowing, so we are good. If no air bubbles are coming up, tap the container slightly, don’t tilt it.
- Leave it for 20 min.
- After 20 minutes check if container cells emptied completely. If not slightly tap the container or battery a few times, so electrolyte flows into the battery again. Do not remove the container until it is completely empty.
- When it is empty, remove the container from the battery. Then fully insert the strip of sealing cups that we took off the container into the battery’s filling ports. Do it by hand, do not use a hummer or other tools. Don’t force it too much.
- At this point we need to let the battery stand for an hour if the rating is less than 18 Ah. That would be the case for the most motorcycle batteries. If it is more 18 Ah (with high performance rating) then let it sit for about 2 hours. We need it to allow the battery glass mats to absorb the electrolyte.
- The final step is to charge the battery as it would only have about 70-80 percent of charge. Connect the battery to the charger and select AGM battery type. The charger should be able to provide at least 12.8 Volts. I use this NOCO Genius 1100 that provides 14.5 Volts. Charge the battery until it shows 100%.
- Now it is ready to be put on the bike."

Thank you Max! I was actually kind of worried, I thought I needed some advanced equipment to do this, but the battery charger I already had on my wishlist and it was discounted for buying it with the batter, so I got a good deal! Thanks for your assistance and clear tutorials. Stay safe!

So MAX... I’ve seen some videos where it recommends waiting a full hour for the bubbles to stop bubbling before installing the cap. Why didn’t you wait the hour doe the acid to stop bubbling ? Will it effect it?

I don’t have the alligator clips to hook up directly to the battery, but I do have it hardwired to my battery thru my motorcycle. Can I just install the battery and charge it through my bikes connection
@christosx13

Everything ok but the right thing is to NOT seal the battery straight after the electrolyte. You just put gently the cap over the holes for the dust and wait 2-3 hours for the chemical reaction and evaporation. After you seal and charge with the lowest amber you can. My last YUASA that i fixed for my bike this way showed 13,20 right after first charge and kept1 3,12 for the first months and just over 13V for a year at least (being settled not after charging or riding). I installed it on Sept. 2018 and is still shows 12,7 Volts after days not riding .

My Suzuki GS850's 3 year old AGM battery has lost some cca and struggles to start the bike at times. Battery was never left discharged for extended periods of time. Can it be rejuvenated via new electrolytes? I know adding water to it is a no no.
@KMaxVideo
@KMaxVideo 3 года назад
Hi there. You won't be able to bring AGM battery back to life with the new electrolyte. The AGM battery has fiberglass mats inside soaked with the electrolyte. You can't really replace the electrolyte. AGM battery is always sealed, so electrolyte should be just fine. You can try to bring the battery back yo life following the steps recommended in the link bellow. You'll need a charger designed for the AGM batteries, or you'll need to trick a regular charger. Never hearts to try. Is it normal to hear it fizz? Like a can of pop?

Hi, Yes, it is normal. As the acid fills the elements, the air bubbles out from them. Ride safe! Max

Nope, 12.97V is not "perfect" at all bro for a new agm battery :) It should produce around 13.8 -14 V when it is on 100% charge and every panel operates fine. It was probably an overstored battery on higher temperature for longer period.
@KMaxVideo
@KMaxVideo 3 года назад
Hi Tamás Adrián, Good catch! You are right that if you take it from the charger and measure it right away, it would show higher voltage. If you measure it within 1 minute, it can even show 16V. After 4-5 min it would show 13.5-14V. Yuasa (the manufacturer) recommends to test voltage after 1-2 hours after the charge. They call it "Open Circuit Terminal Voltage" measured after 1-2 hours. That one should be 12.9-13.0V. That's what I called perfect. :) In my video I actually took it of the charger earlier, and connected only for a very short period to show that it was charged to 100%. You can see the graph showing how the open circuit voltage changes over time here: www.yuasabatteries.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Screen-Shot-2019-05-10-at-2.18.49-PM.png. Thank you and ride safe! So that means that I have to buy the battery 🔋 and the charger👎 ?
@KMaxVideo
@KMaxVideo 2 года назад
It is good to have a charger anyway if the bike is stored or not ridden for a long time, so the battery can be charged periodically.

Thanks, I think I need a charger, I try to charge my Old battery with my truck, and i think a ruined that😔I didn’t know that this battery’s get charge by low volts chargers. Thanks 🙏
