Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries get to a point where they will not charge because they are below 8V - 5V, be that a Northstar, Odyssey, Optima, Deka, or any other brand of AGM battery.
AGM batteries differ from flooded lead acid batteries in that the electrolyte is held in the glass mats, as opposed to freely flooding the plates. Very thin glass fibers are woven into a mat to increase surface area enough to hold sufficient electrolyte on the cells for their lifetime. The fibers that compose the fine glass mat do not absorb nor are they affected by the acidic electrolyte. These mats are wrung out 2-5% after being soaked in acids, prior to manufacture completion and sealing.
The plates in an AGM battery may be any shape. Some are flat, others are bent or rolled. AGM batteries, both deep cycle and starting, are built in a rectangular case to BCI battery code specifications.
Many modern motorcycles and ATVs on the market use AGM batteries to reduce likelihood of acid spilling during cornering, vibration, or after accidents, and for packaging reasons. The lighter, smaller battery can be installed at an odd angle if needed for the design of the motorcycle. Due to the higher manufacturing costs compared with flooded lead-acid batteries, AGM batteries are currently used on premium vehicles. As vehicles become heavier and equipped with more electronic devices such as navigation, stability control, and premium stereos, AGM batteries are being employed to lower vehicle weight and provide better electrical reliability compared with flooded lead-acid batteries.
5 series BMWs from March 2007 incorporate AGM batteries in conjunction with devices for recovering brake energy using regenerative braking and computer control to ensure the alternator charges the battery when the car is decelerating. Vehicles used in auto racing may use AGM batteries due to their vibration resistance.
Deep-cycle AGMs are also commonly used in off grid solar power and wind power installations as an energy storage bank and in large-scale amateur robotics, such as the FIRST and IGVC competitions.
AGM batteries are routinely chosen for remote sensors such as ice monitoring stations in the Arctic. AGM batteries, due to their lack of free electrolyte, will not crack and leak in these cold environments.
VRLA batteries are used extensively in power wheelchairs, as the extremely low gas and acid output makes them much safer for indoor use. VRLA batteries are also used in the UPS (uninterruptible power supply) as a back up when the electrical power goes off.
VRLA batteries are also the standard power source in sailplanes, due to their ability to withstand a variety of flight attitudes and a relatively large ambient temperature range with no adverse effects. However, charging regimes must be adapted with varying temperature.[8] Both AGM and Gel cells are commonly used in powered aerobatic aircraft, for the same reasons.[citation needed]
AGM and Gell-cell batteries are also used for recreational marine purposes, with AGM being more commonly available. AGM deep-cycle marine batteries are offered by a number of suppliers. They typically are favored for their low maintenance and spill-proof quality, although generally considered a less cost effective solution relative to traditional flooded cells.

*This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries, **batery.repair** and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!*

NoCo battery repair works on most batteries that are 'restorable', ie; the lead plates weren't dry or neglected. I restored a cheap 9 year old Everstart 275CA lawn tractor battery that at first read 3 volts but after 2 weeks of intermittent battery repair mode it took a full charge and the load test read more than 200CCA and held it! Ran a repair few more times and it now works great. Note this battery never dried at all, all cells remained flooded. My Interstate car battery OTOH had 2 cells that had exposed plates and even after topping off and repair mode run all weekend only 1 cell came back full the other was dead. In all I restored 3 of 4 batteries using repair mode and by repair they hold a charge and crank over motors without worry. You'll rarely get full CCA new ratings back but that's to be expected.

Hi. Its incorrect to say that AGMs wont take charge if they are below 8V. Ive charged an AGM that only had 5 Volts no problem. The problem is not the battery. The problem is the charger. Lot of chargers come with a cutoff to stop users from charging batteries that are degraded to the point of short circuit. If you use very old chargers (no cutoff) they will charge and the battery will take charge. Problem is not limited to AGMs btw

Great training for me. Not only did he go through many different procedures to try to bring back a bad battery but he also showed how to use the volt meter and a battery load tester and why he needed to use both in this case. Also using a regular battery tester to get the bad battery up to a higher voltage was very important to see.

What amazes me is that when you go to Walmart or Autozone to buy a new battery and the battery you buy has been sitting on the store shelves for 6 months or more and you actually think that a battery that is already 6 months old is really brand new.

CTEK 5.0 is the ticket for AGM (as well as traditional) batteries. I just finished running the recond on a 6 yr old AGM battery in my BMW. This battery had been on a CTEK regular mode which goes into maintenance mode after initial charge for more than a month and a half. Battery is rated at 800CCA. Testing with CTEK battery tester it tested @675CCA straight off the charger. After Running CTEK 5.0 AGM/Recond it tests @925CCA. What more could you ask for?

Old dumb 6 amp charger will charge those batteries if they can be charged. Might start at very low amps. (like .5) and gradually increase to 6 amps over hours. Then charge at gradually reducing amps over many hours. The 6 amp charger charges at less than 6 amps when a good battery is pushing back at more than 12.6 volts. Will usually "taper" to less than 1 amp. Bigger (high amp.) and "starter" chargers such as on wheels and found in garages can boil and damage a battery or even damage car electrical systems if connected to a battery that is still hooked up to the car cables. The dumb charger is not safe to be left connected unsupervised for a long time to a good battery because it will eventually probably exceed 15 volts at less than .5 amps charging which might damage the battery. Would be good if they made a charger with a built in accurate voltmeter and ability to program it to cut off at a particular voltage and open the circuit so as not to allow the battery to discharge back through the now shut down charger. Say a voltage of about 14.5 which is about the maximum you want to take an (healthy) Odyssey battery up to on charge.

Yeah that battery shot considering even though it's showing there is voltage on it the voltage that's on that battery it might be a slightly dead cell but then again you try putting a traditional charger on it that's probably your best bet not the genius charger cuz the genius charger may tell you battery is good sometimes it may not may tell you the battery is bad so what do you have to go on?

my agm scooter battery looses charge way too fast will go from over 13 volts fully charged to around 12.8 volts just from sitting not in the bike so its not parasitic drain before it would hold 13 volts charge for months any hope or is it time for new one. I keep it inside because I've had them stolen sad but true. I did drain it once trying to start the bike so maybe that killed it.

@ 10:43--might need more time if that is a low amp. charger--if the battery is storing the charge and holding it the voltage will go up to over 13 volts. Probably eventually to over 14 volts,if the battery isn't getting too warm probably no great danger of explosion
@davidpowell3347
@davidpowell3347 9 месяцев назад
At the end if that battery were any good it would have been charging at 14.5 volts or even higher,and when disconnected from the charger after an hour or so would have showed 12.6 volts or a little higher open circuit.

Good job making the video, it was very informative. I am very impressed with the Noco Genius 5 and 10 chargers and the repair mode, and force mode they have to charge a battery that is below 1 volt. What is your opinion on battery desulfators for maintaining a battery? I use a Pulse Tech PowerPulse passive desulfator, they claim to have a patented frequency they use to desulfate batteries and can extend the life of a battery up to three times, I have been using it on my BMW battery for the past three years and never have any issue's starting even though I only drive about 25 miles per week.
@davidpowell3347
@davidpowell3347 9 месяцев назад
Might add that when connected up in a car,the car can be taking power out of the battery even when the key is turned off and removed from the car even if the dome light isn't on--I suspect as much as an amp-hour drained from the battery every day-the battery stays charged much longer if the cable is disconnected

Repeatedly AAA comes and uses a discharged battery with that meter that sais it's not restorable.....they are clueless or lying to don't know how to read the test....the tester doesn't work on a battery unless it's fully charged? That must be why when I charge my batteries and use them against their advice they actually work again...... Another issue is I think batteries can get used up but I don't know the technology on that...this assumes there's restoration in battery chargers alone.....I think they are all fully restorable and the companies need to be totally tracked on what exactly they do with all those old batteries....Add electrolytes, repackage, resell.......is my suspicion. I also wonder if the tests work on a battery that just sat and sat....I'm hearing you can't restore a battery that sat on concrete....but nobody can explain why....I have an Optima I never used but it's a 2010....brand new....but discharged deeply.... Another thing is why....oh why just you don't put them in a car to charge them up? People say it can destroy the alternator but I don't know.....would like to....
