Ahh such a great video! Rest is soooo important. Since last year I’ve been trying to heal my relationship with art after getting super burnt out. It was partially because I would be super critical of myself so I’m working on stepping away from my paintings more often. I also really liked your improvement guide you suggested! I’m definitely going to try it out!

2:10 1. Expand your visual library: study, analyze, 4:02 2. Learn the Fundamentals 4:45 3. Studies, trace (with educational proposes) 9:26 4. References! 10:46 5. Consistency 12:29 6. Self critique (Flip your canvas lol) 14:12 7. Rest #1: Stuck in a piece? Step away! 14:41 Rest #2 Rest period, take periods to rest and avoid burn out and injury Woah, I really wish someone told me this tips before, especially the last tho. I was the kind of person that is always doing stuff, but when I was in a low moment I've learn that as I like to work, also I like and need to rest. Also the Art Fundamentals is the base of any good artist, the references and studies to improve even faster.

!!!! I'm so excited that you said tracing to study is valid, haha. There's so much stigma against tracing that I don't even dare say the word publicly for fear that someone would just assume the worst. Tracing some artists I admire was going to be my next step in studying and this gives me so much relief 🥰

The resting is really important. Last year I was getting back into art and started going really hard on the figure drawing stuff. It was fun at first but after a while I started dreading having to draw anything since I felt like I couldn't draw any of the stuff I actually wanted to (like from imagination). That aside figure drawing did really help me. I was surprised at how I was able to draw poses a lot easier when I couldn't draw them at all before. I'm not the most consistent though so I'll be starting back with that along with the other things listed in this very informative video.

Thank you for taking the time out to make this! I glanced at your pinned comment and your foundational advice stood out to me the most because I've heard what you'd mention in another way recently--focus on drawing shapes! So, I will do it! I watched that video of yours when you sketched people in a cafe', that was unique to me! I'm interested in your book, and I have yet to watch your videos on it, so I think I'll do that now lol...great website you have! Your work goes unnoticed!

Thank you for sharing your insight! I appreciate that you share the schedule to keep consistency, I've always heard people say to practice more but not much on how. And also love the note on "it's ok to do lots of mediocre small pieces instead of a grand time-consuming big piece".

Hi Jackie Droujko, I just watched your video and found it super helpful! However, one question I do have is organization. How do you organize an 'artist learning management system'? You know how you have to plan what you are going to learn before you start learning? What would that look like to you? Do you plan to make the learning, study, or project a day thing? A week thing? A month thing? And how do you break down tasks from there? Do you organize them personally or use an external tool? I hope it's alright if I am asking this because I am curious to know more and am definitely looking forward to more watching and learning more from you

I agree with most of your tips but will add I think the tracing tip is fine if your just tracing specific body parts or things your weak at to learn them or tracing maybe the overall movement of a figure quickly to understand the fluidity of movement better. But tracing won’t help if you trace an entire artworks outlines or something. If you trace an entire photo for practice only tracing outlines (and your not doing s color study,) let’s say you may just memorize how to draw that specific photo without retaining any skills to apply to other artworks. Thus I feel it’s important to point out tracing as a way to gain skill only works for specific elements of art or body parts you want to better understand how to draw. While if you want to draw a whole body, or picture it’s better to compartmentalize it and learn to break it into shapes and understand how to deconstruct it so you can build it up or draw it yourself and to train your eye to overall see things for more then just outlines. Idk if that fully made sense but I just think it’s important to use tracing for specific things in tandem with shape building and other techniques to utilize its skills instead of using it as a crutch which manny beginners can fall trap to.

I've been learning art for a few years and I agree with some of what you say and disagree with some. For example, I think that it is useful to learn from an artist by copying their work. That way you can understand and know better how their art works. Of course, when putting out work to sell or use as ones own, one needs to depart from other artists work at least to some extent.
@JackieDroujko

Absolutely agree, hope it was clear in the video that analyzing artists is only the first step of learning how to improve your art.
