I really appreciate that you showed your struggles too! Sometimes I just forget that other people struggle with drawing different things =)

Hi Jackie, I love your content and your stylisation is awesome! I know my place as a commoner artist but if you really want to improve your portraits I recommend doing them in greyscale for a while. The colours you included in this one are very pretty and harmonize well but I noticed that you didn't really include enough depth on her brow ridge, chicks and chin. I heard, Manu Mercurial, another art youtuber say once that if your values are right then you can add whatever colours you like but if you have bad values, it doesn't matter what colours you add, your image will fall flat. It also comes down to your intention. I'm not really sure what you were going for in this portrait but if you want your portraits to look more like Samdoesart's for example, then I suggest doing greyscale. In his RU-vid videos, Sam reiterates these points as well. Anyway, hope this helps! Looking forward to seeing improvements :)

It’s amazing how she’s made a video doing exactly this now and has actively tried to find a wider range of people to paint. So much growth in just a year 🥰

I love your style. Your use of interpretation is beautiful. I'd say with the eyes, the reason they are falling so flat, is because you're leaving out the under eye shadows. The under eye darkness or bags is what really makes the eyes sing. It shows the effects of their emotions in their eyes. It goes the same for upper eyelids. To me, even though those areas are seen as "imperfections", are actually what makes a face so perfect in their own way.

it's actually quite reassuring for me to see someone with such a successful career in art struggle with the things I find easy. Reminds me that no one is good at everything instantly.

This is a great way to see that even professional artist have a zone they struggle with, even tho I think it came out amazing at the end lol

I love how your style is still so recognizable in this piece! Also I think the eyes turned out great . I personally struggle with rendering the waterlines and I think you did a great job at that☺️

This actually looks really good! For not knowing how to render, you did it very nicely, even the eyes! I'm honestly impressed

For a beginner, this is pretty good. There's a lot of things that can be improved, of course there is. You probably noticed a to0n of them the moment you thought you were finished lol. Happens all the time. But it is a very good start and I like the dedication and consistency you seem to have towards sticking with it. Side notes . . . I don't know if this will help, I think were at somewhat similar skill levels when it comes to this and just wanted to share a few things I've learned recently that have helped a lot. 1. Clipping masks are your friend. Make a layer for the arms with a single solid color. Add a layer on top, clip it to the one below and paint the shading for the arms in that layer. You can repeat this for any part you thing necessary and merge the layers when done. 2. When it comes to skin colors, The light tones start at yellow. As you begin to add shadows, every time you get darker move the hue closer to the direction of red. 3. It will help the facial features a lot if you add more shadows. around the eyes, nose, bottom of the lips, etc. I think that will make a big difference. 4. It might help to draw on a non-white background. Any kind of neutral colors like gray or tan are great. Totally optional but it seems to help me a lot. I absolutely adore it if I had critique I’d say just the nose seems like it’s from a straight on perspective more than the angle she’s at. But this is something I am trying to fix in myself so may be because it is something I myself struggle with on lips especially so like 100 % relatable. The colors are so wonderfully blended and mixing together in all the best ways!

Iliya Mirochnik, instructor at Ringling and trained from Repin, St Petersburg, said in his NMA lecture that when approaching the eye, it is important to treat the eye and its surroundings with the same importance. This means the eyebrow, lacrimal glands, bottom eyelids and part of the orbital socket next to the nose bridge. Analyzing the cast of the eyes of the statue of David is a good way to approach the forms of the eye. Arcane by Fortiche and Riot is a masterful example of depicting form while maintaining simplicity in detail. From my observations, the entire eye socket of Arcane characters tend to be much darker than the face, showing that it’s “sunk in”. Then, simply remove shadow (or add lighter color) to carve form upwards (lacrimal glands, eye ball and lids)

I really recomend studying the anatomy a bit. Really nothing like a good brush up on the solid structure to better understand how to render the forms :) you’re doing great. You’re really good at a lot of the things im bad at like good design and simplification

I felt connection from the introduction so I ll share some random info. I went for design college but it turned out to be very bad. Like scam level of bad. I got artblock from the lack of art in general while studying there and now i just crave drawing and learning arts all over again, from the very start, from basics. I am trying to build a habit to draw consistenly, slowly but i hope i ll soon make it regular, and the whole past week i was thinking about making an oil painting. Before i start seriously learning arts though i feel like the most important for me is to remember how to fall in love with drawing again. So i am focusing on that for a moment.

You definitely gotta trust the ugly stage in rendered work. I don’t know if you experience the ugly stage with your illustrative work, but if you do, it’s like that. I experience the ugly stage pretty much every time I sit down to draw. I have to find the zone, at which point I unclench.

Maybe pick up oil painting! It really sucks and I hate it but it really forces you to make clear decisions on light/shadow, hue shifts, form, etc. Digital doesn’t really narrow down my decision making since I can endlessly redo and fix stuff. Also this painting is really great don’t beat yourself uppp
