How to adapt your favorite movies books and series to D&D 

Themes are exactly the reason why I am not really into sandbox gaming, but sadly too many people in the hobby thing that sandbox is the pinnacle of playing and thus are incapable to delve into thematic play. And as much as I agree with you, I think there is a little detail missing in the video, themes are best when they are tied to the character arc. Thus not just about how the character interacts with the fiction, but also presents the players with the opportunity to play some inner struggle when coming to a decision, since they might have to overcome themselves first. I like to use as example the film Independence day, where the plot is about the alien invasion, but the themes are more about communication, and thus the people have to overcome multiple times themselves to actually talk with others and thus find solutions. But if we take Iron Man,I think the second film is there also great when it comes to theme and the inner struggle, since the theme there is legacy - what do we leave for posterity, and with Tony thinking he is dying he is thinking about his legacy, but there are also the legacy of his father, and that theme is also a driving force for a few other characters as well, including the main antagonist. Thus showing that theme has not just to be in the setting, but has to be part of the characters, and of course it influences then how they approach the choices they have.
