I like how you taped the whole hood. I was just gonna use a jig saw with a metal blade.

Just starting to cut today. August 3. Measured about 127 times. Easy way is to tape a string on the hood crease from the nose tip to the back by windshield for a cent line. Be careful if you have any RS sway bar. Vent will hit when shut

Get some 1/4” weatherstripping and wrap the cut and place the vent on top. Might allow for centering the vent and will look better. Not perfect should help. Appreciate you showing the process including the mess up.

The only thing I would have done differently is I would have taken a mover blanket from Harbor Freight and laid it across the windshield because when you're grinding it's a possibility that you could pit the windshield

I wonder how this would look on my 2006 mustang gt? I've read these are 22+ inches in length, is that correct? This is one of the better looking hood vents and it's dirt cheap for the knockoffs. The trackspec vents just look out of place to me. You could have put some edge molding around the hole and moved the vent over more towards the center. still might have looked funny. I just measured my hood center and the center crease is the actual center of the hood, surprised.

I would do a gasket around it, the little off would cause my ocd to kick in. Is why I been putting this mod off, I have the ZL1 front and causes lift at high speeds due to air getting trapped under hood.

Thanks for the tips. Personally I would of used a jigsaw with rubber bottom + used Gorilla tape where the cutting happens for added no scratching. Would not of had to cover the whole hood because hot metal would not be flying and you not only have to cut the thin hood but also supports on the backside so getting all that with the jigsaw. Still wondering why 3m tape is not used to adhere it down eliminating the strap & bolt idea. Maybe the insert is flat and not curved to match the hood where strapping it would pull it into place.

Also, take your 2" tape and use its edge as your hood centerline. Lay the next one touching that one and you have a marked centerline, top to bottom. Do the same on the first hood line from center with a taped edge so you have a definitive line to do your measurements side to side. Saves all that wasted tape going to the hood edge. And always build up the area you are cutting with a few more layers of tape for an accidental skip. Flip your scoop upside down to trace because it's nearly flat. Also make a template with a hole so you can trace INSIDE your dimensions to give you just a little more protection from cutting too much. When you trace AROUND your template, now that line moves further out, all the way around it. It's those little things that creates luck on your side. You also want to match your centerline between template and scoop. Put a little mark on the template that matches a mark on the scoop. Use some tape on the scoop to mark that

Honestly doesn’t look bad at all! Just got my as and mine is faded black and I want to fix it. I’m not good with cars, at all 😂 do you think it would be easier for me to mask it off and spray paint it or to just order a new one and replace it? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Probably too late for this suggestion on your gap. You could find some flat thin, rubber weatherstripping with maybe a 1/4" thickness to close up some of that gap and get it a little more center too. I did a bolt on snorkel scoop like that and it looked great. Put the seam centered in the back. Also, throw a blanket over that engine. Saves metal shavings everywhere and also sparks interacting with gas and/or fumes making your day way worse then a scratch.
