In this video I take you through the process of adding a new circuit into an existing main or sub panel. This process can be slightly different for different panel manufacturers but the basic principles are the same.
How to pull a wire into a panel.
How to install a new breaker.

Im my opinion, it's safer and easier to strip the sheathing before you put it in the connector. Just figure out where you need to strip off the sheathing, and strip it. Then put it through your connector until you have enough sheathing coming through. That way you don't need to stick your hands and stripper/utility knife into the panel. I would also recommend to turn your face when turning on your newly installed breaker, just in case there is a fault. You never know if a spark might come out or if a breaker will blow.

I've been an electrician for 35+ years, we didn't have some of the tools you do. But always hookup first the ground, then the neutral, then the power. Remember electricity takes the simplest route, so you don't want to be it.

No, it takes all available routes. How do you think circuits work my guy
@FishFind3000
@FishFind3000 3 года назад
@@MrFitness94 it takes the easiest path if there’s no other path for that power to go and your part of the circuit you get fried my guy.... learn something before you talk out your ass. Electricity flows though copper wire much easier then a human body so it’s going to want to take that path. It’s just about how everything in the universe works. The path of least resistance.
@geraldbagby8880
@geraldbagby8880 3 года назад
@@FishFind3000 Actually, electricity takes all available paths. You were correct in stating that if there were no other path, and your body became an available path, then electricity would go through you. However, if your body becomes connected in parallel with a load in an electrical circuit, electricity will flow through you and the wiring of the circuit. Mike Holt debunks the myth that electricity takes the path of least resistance in many of his excellent videos on electrical safety and fundamentals. I recommend his website (mikeholt.com) and RU-vid channel (MikeHoltNEC). Here's one of his videos where he mentions the misconception that electricity takes the path of least resistance (within the first minute or so)ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3vvvv5QVZoA.html

@@FishFind3000 Actually, light travels the path of least time, not the path of least resistance. There’s a lot more light out there than electricity.
@MrFitness94
@MrFitness94 3 года назад
@@FishFind3000 if i have a light switch, and a space heater on the same circuit, the light would never turn on by your logic. The heater has less resistance, so you’re saying that all of the current would flow through it. Nop, both turn on, and current flow through each path is determined by ohms law, simple. If I touch the circuit, the heater AND light will continue to be on, as well as I will have current flow through me - contrary to the nonsense you’re spewing. Electricity takes every and all available paths with current being inversely proportionate to resistance. Nice try though!

If I learned anything over those years , it was the best thing any home owner can do to protect their family and property, was to always use a trained professional in a particular field to do the work. Saving a few dollars and putting you family safety at risk is not worth it. I have seen the loss and damage caused by non professional doing things they were never allowed to.

You're making me feel old... lol... I pretty much only use a klien 4b and diagonal cutters... You can completly kill a panel by pulling the meter, which in my state is legal... What really struck me was your precision in the panel... I like how you always kept your off hand to the side of the box at all times... Not many people would understand why we do that... Those split circuits on single pole breakers however clearly indicates this house was not inspected right... Also means they can't be afci or gfci protected from the breaker... Ah... the good old days... I also don't like the qo style panels with the back bar... A+ my man!!!

I had to install like 6 new circuits, I just installed all dual function breakers, I have a plug on neutral bar as well, I like how much more secure they feel with the plug-on neutral bar. The standard CAFCI circuits cost exactly the same as the dual function circuit breakers so I didn't see much reason to not just use the dual function instead of just CAFCI's. If I start getting nuisance tripping on certain outlets or something I'll just pick up a CAFCI circuit and replace it and then move the dual function breaker to another circuit. I live in Indiana which still follows the 2008 NEC, so technically I don't need CAFCI circuits but I'd rather just have them anyway since I'm doing all the electrical work myself and I'm saving a ton of money.

Meticulous, great work Ben! Only quibble is your terminology! You inadvertently use wire and cable interchangeably. Follow the NEC to avoid confusion. Romex, or NM-B, is cable. It contains wires, which are conductors. So a group of two or more conductors is a cable, or cable assembly.

Very nice video. A related issue that I've not been able to find online (except for electricians arguing with one another 🙂) is how to bring wire into the side of a panel if the panel is flush-mounted between two studs. Can you use a side knockout and then drill through the stud and pass the wire through as in any other stud? If so, what do you use for a wire clamp to the panel box since the stud is fastened right next to the box?

@@FishFind3000, yes. 120 Volts are enough for most "simple" home IT equipment. But, IMHO, near-"high-end" gaming computers often have PSU's, rated in range of 1000 - 2000 Watts (peak or continuous). It is more efficient to power this equipment from 200+ Volts (in range of 208 - 220 - 230 - 240 Volts). Voltage is higher, but current is lower, less chance of overheating of power circuit's components (cables, receptacles/plugs). More over, USA slowly migrates to 200+ Volts for IT equipment, as a new type of power connector for IT equipment PSU's wsa introduced and added to the range of IEC 320 standard connectors. This new connector rated for 277 V and was specifically designed for use in USA's new datacenters with 480/277 V power distribution networks.

@FishFind3000 3 года назад
@@sergeyblinov4957 480v is 3 phase power.... that's not what homes get. plus if you run 240v you need a duel pole breaker for each circuit so you will have half as many slots available in the panel vs if you used 120v. All you need is 12ga wire and you can wire each outlet/ circuit per computer. Also most high end pc don't use all 2000 watts its just a sales tactic unless your mining all day everyday. At that point you should either look at wiring a larger panel or sub panel or get a commercial space with higher power supply.
