Great little upgrade on the rear view mirror that quickly becomes a “BIG” upgrade as you get in the habit of looking at it to use the information. The ambient air temp sensor is a positive temperature coefficient thermistor in a clip on/bolt on housing. Simply called a PTC thermistor, the colder outside, higher resistance, drops gently on a downward curve as it gets warmer. Very little current runs thru it but for those reading, alway use both wires. It is what’s called a dedicated ground directly into the display circuit. Never use the chassis for ground as too much resistance, even low throws off the reading. Good catch on the cold soldered 403 years ohm resistors. They are in series and one end cracks, goes out or intermittent. Also, getting the face off the mirror, tabs are spaced equally around outer edge. A 0.90” thousand feeler blade works well and use two or three as you work it off. Never use a pocket flat blade screwdriver as even those are way to thick & will make ugly marks. SnapOn sells the blades separately from the entire kit but HF will allow you to get 3 or 4 kits and work the same. Power or ground turns on a “Dichromatic” mirror dimming for all 3 mirrors. (Your May vary / Review schematic for correct year / GM and others have wires & connector, colors and proper cavities) Go to dealer and ask a tech who will print for a six pack or $5. Each tech have a terminal but may share with 1 or 2 techs. Nice job for a cool upgrade as I put one in a 1967 C10 without “On-Star” and changed circuit board from “SIR” to Select to switch. 6-8 regional GM AUTH SHOP, but a number of shops do these and may sell “Soft Button” cover, even face plate. Great job of swapping out. It is work to video, prep, review, edit then upload. Takes longer that changing the mirror, right? Nice. ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired
Thanks for the tip on the resistor repair at the end of the video. My mirror died the same way. My base model 1999 Silverado had a plain mirror. I grabbed one like yours from a parts truck and installed it in 2015, Looking forward to attempting the resolder tomorrow.
Thank you!!! Been needing this for my 99 LS Silverado 2500! If you could find a way to get power/heated mirrors on this model as well, that’d be sweet. Rock on!
They're not chips, those are resistors. In my case, the voltage regulator on the main board was also toast, had to replace that too. Just look around and try to spot some scorch marks or cracked solder joints and sometimes, obvious probles might stand out.
I tried wiring it in I bought the harness and sensor but it’s still saying open circuit does the wire location matter on the sensor? They came only white so not sure
Will the auto dimming work for a 05 cateye 2500hd work truck model truck no power windows or anything at all straight up work truck,I want the dimming the outside air temp an direction of travel
my mirror harness was tucked up inside the headliner. added a mirror and a temp sensor and bam. 2000 silverado with power windows. i've heard if the 99-06 trucks don't have power windows, they wont have the mirror harness tucked up inside the headliner.
